Most of those players either haven't played much for Casey lately or have been bit parts. The only players they will miss are ANB (assuming he is the MFC emergency) and possibly OMac. The core of the side that annihilated Frankston and Collingwood is still there - I can't see any justification for Williamstown being favourites over the side on top of the ladder with 300%.

I can.

Firstly, Williamstown is the reigning premier. It lost last week to the previous season's premier Box Hill Hawks and in all likelihood would have been sitting undefeated with a percentage of over 300 had it played the opposition Casey has faced in its small sample of two games.

Secondly, history says that when less than half of the Casey team is comprised of MFC players, it struggles. In round 1, Casey had 16 Demons and the number was down to 14 last week. After seemingly being well off for injured players earlier in the week it was disappointing to learn we would be down to a maximum of 11 against a strong side like Williamstown.

Thirdly, you can't downgrade the quality of the missing players. They are all AFL listed and will have to be replaced by kids coming up from the development league, many of them being smaller and lighter-bodied.

Fourthly, I saw what Williamstown can do, albeit in a practice match earlier in the year. Despite being a stand alone side with no current AFL listed players, they do have a good number of former AFL players who have big bodies and used their greater physical strength in that game to wear down Casey's young, inexperienced team. Casey led a quarter time with three goals, kicked one goal in the second and lost control of the match and failed to kick a goal at all in the second half to lose by ten. They had 11 MFC players in the team that day and most of them were monstered by the opposition. The exceptions IMO were Jayden Hunt and Heritier Lumumba who are now playing for the Demons (in fact, when I raved a bit about Hunt's potential in that game, I copped some flak for saying so).

Finally, Casey struggled in the ruck. It did best last year when it had Mark Jamar and Jake Spencer - neither of them are playing tonight and that spells trouble for tonight's game. The Scorpions need Jake back ASAP.

Good news is that if Casey & Melbourne can get through injury/suspension free then there could be up to 18 Melbourne listed players available next week.

The mystery absentees Dawes, Stretch & Smith plus Oliver, M. Jones, Oscar and Spencer could all also be available for selection.

Scorpions in a close one tonight for mine.

Does anyone know where/when we can see the final team lineup for Casey now that Melbourne has finalised theirs?

Thanks. Stretch and Smith are two that I was wondering about.

Am I right in assuming that the VFL free to air games won't be shown until round 4? If so its pretty [censored] poor by channel 7. They were supposedly championing their promotion of the local game when purchasing the TV rights. I preferred the abc at least you knew a game would be broadcast every Saturday afternoon.

Not sure what the actual deal is but they've shown a game on 7 for at least the last 2 weeks.

They show a Sunday game now rather than a Saturday.

Keilty and Max King. Keilty copped a head knock last week so we were short of a ruckman occasionally.  I saw Hulett shape up to ruck at one stage before being relieved by Keilty returning to the fray with head in a bandage.

Keep your eye on McInerney. Looks pretty capable and isn't far off playing in the firsts. Wont be surprised if he plays tonight.

Willy smashed Casey in a practice match. Very good side.

Agreed. Underestimate Williamstown at your own peril.

Meantime, the Development League game is under way and it's a close contest as it was when they last met here in the practice match.

Casey lead 3.3.21 to 3.1.19 at QT but Willi has the advantage of the breeze coming up. Ed Morris is playing a great game and is clearly in contention for a senior berth in his comeback from injury.

Sensational news in another game down by the bay. Frankston seniors who Casey thumped by 24 goals just two weeks ago have gotten up to beat the Richmond Tigers.

Their first win since July 2014.

I wonder how many and who of the Tigers' emergencies played in that game. If Deledio is in any way doubtful, you'd think they might need to keep 2 emergencies up their sleeves for tomorrow night.

Taylor Hunt didnt play. If he replaces Deledio Richmond effectively have 21 players.

Does anyone know if Petracca is playing tonight? I'm thinking about heading down.

It's pretty safe to drive down. I can't see them making Petracca the emergency for tomorrow if they reckon he needs more time at Casey.

The lights are on and the young Scorpions are struggling to make up the leeway.

I hope that plenty of Demon fans make it down tonight and provide comments. Apart from anything else, I need to conserve my battery power.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

A couple of intrepid Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock for the midweek Preseason Training Session to bring you the following observations. Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
