No more Grand Final replays as AFL Commission agrees to 'golden score'

Grand final draw, will go to time on (5 min each way), then if still drawn,... next score wins!

Thats so awesomely school yard... I love it!

And next point wins with no siren after 10 mins? Imagine rushing a behind and losing the grand final. Imagine a score review to see if it hit the point post or not! Mental. 

Will love to be in the position that that might be an issue 110 minutes in the future!...

Imagine how insane that extra time on "next score wins" ball up and play would be!

Wild! then so tragic... or euphoric!

Should really be next GOAL wins. Winning a grand final from a rushed behind would be quite the anti-climax.

I like it  - i have been to a few drawn grand finals and apart from the very hollow feeling on the day the replays just seem to lack something.

Very happy not to have replays.

( however if it happens and the pressure that will bring with it  -  I am tipping you will see footballers reputations enshrined in folklore for both the right and wrong reasons) 

Agree it should be "Golden Goal!", the old "next goal wins"...

i used to be in favour of the rematch, but since they brought in draw-breakers for the other finals matches i guess it's more consistent

i wonder if the next step will be home and away draw-breakers?

The replay was archaic, had to go.

I'd rather just have continuous periods of 5 min each way extra time than golden point (or golden goal).

But I don't think the golden point after 1 set of extra time each way is all that bad.

It definitely needs a siren and reset from the centre of the ground. Can't just call it after the 5 minute periods finish.

did they say anything about a short break for the coach(es) to address them?

I like it.  Think there needs to be a definite outcome on the day.  Making everyone come back and do it all again a week later just seems too cruel to me.   

I've got a close mate under a tight grip of his wife who hates the footy. She only lets him go to the queen's birthday and grand final (he is Collingwood). The look on her face when we explained that we would be going back the following week for a decider against Collingwood and saints almost makes up for Melbourne's lost decade.

If scores are level after full time and level again after a further ten minutes plus time-on then I am happy with next score.

Seems to be the topic of the moment.  Pretty sure I heard on the radio news this morning that the NRL are also throwing around similar options for tied Thugby Grand Finals...

What about the tennis solution - first to get 2 goals in a row.  They could have a night GF that started at 2pm.

Makes some sense but even close to the end of the 5 minute periods teams will be trying to get any score anyway they can.  The golden goal smacks too much of a contrived ending going against the continuity and scoring philosophy  practiced for over a hundred years.

Next point wins? Is that genuinely for real? Why not next goal? Other than that is a much overdue common sense decision to scrap the replay.

NRL already has golden point (which they use in the normal season as well). Last year's grand final went to golden point and was one of the all time great grand finals.

With the golden goal there could be the ludicrous scenario where a side scores six behinds in a row and then the other side scores a goal and the scores are still level. Does the golden goal scorer win or is  another golden goal required? Or if a side scores seven behinds and then concedes a goal, does the loser win? Will behinds need to be eliminated  from the golden goal period? There needs to be certainty that eliminate probabilities of unjust results.

Should be a siren at the end of the second 5 minutes, the ball bought straight back to the middle to equalise things and then next GOAL wins, not next point. Having no siren and next point is a recipe for disaster as someone may rush a behind 1 second after the 5 minutes without knowing it will cost them the game.

A golden goal disregarding behinds will be a corruption to how the game has been historically played and scored.  Normal games and grand finals can be won by a rushed behind so why change things? The golden goal scenario is rather ghoulish.  I agree the game resets but the team that gets into scoring position first deserves the first chance under normal game rules.
