Casey Scorpions Off Season News

Dunn and Brayshaw straight in next week. Lumumba, a maybe.

It will be interesting to see if AVB gets up as he wasn't risked today.

Casey were better served by some of their list today. Angus Scott was terrific with three first half goals, James Munro was strong in defence and Bryce Rutherford looks much improved.

There is a possibility that the Casey/Melbourne Intraclub practice match next week will be played on Good Friday - TBA.

As I commence the long drive home from Cranbourne East, I hope that if this happens, they play the game at Goschs Paddock.

Cheers Angry,

Unfortunately I had to leave at halftime so that's my work done for now.

Any questions, feel free.

Mitch White a sneaky chance for Round 1?

I don't think so. Too underdone. He'd be my favourite for the rookie upgrade spot though. I think he offers us more going forward than Wagner and Viv.

Channel 7 news piece on Jack T's comeback last night mentioned he might be chance to have a run in an intra club to be played Good Fiday at Goschs! Hope they are reporting accurately.

WJ, what are your impressions of Weideman? I know it's early days

I'll be there if it's at Gosch's Paddock and I reckon there'd be a fair few others that would be keen to be there. If nothing else I just want to be there to cheer Trenners out onto the park.

Chuffed that Brayshaw got through unscathed. Given he didn't play in any of the nab challenge games, did he look rusty at all? Didn't pick up anything negative in the reports above (thanks guys). Would you reckon he's a lock for round 1?

How's Weideman moving for anyone who is there? very interested to hear how he goes! last year when he played against the Northern Blues VFL side he had 14 marks in the first half or something, a lot of them contested

Took some good grabs. Strong in packs but suffers from poor delivery. Like the look of him.

Ta Samael,

Can we envisage a two pronged attack of him and Hogan by second half of year?

He has got the goods, strong mark noticeably in packs. Good lead. Got some ordinary delivery today. Much better than against Willy but he was not Robinson Crusoe that day.

Hullet was ordinary. Needs a lot of work.

I could only stay until three quarter time, so it was a bit of a shame that I missed a nail biter. My opinion on how the boys went:

Weideman was a presence up forward, marking or jumping into packs to create a contest. He was obviously a bit nervous with the set shot, which is a shame because his routine is very nice.

H played well- got plenty of it from half back and wing, and only went on one of his crazy runs out of defence before being pinged for holding the ball. His overlap run and willingness to create was noticeable.

I didn't think Mitchell White or ANB had good days. ANB looked off the pace. Apparently White got a bit of it but from what I saw he didn’t use it well. The same goes for Terlich. An example from the 3rd quarter: Terlich gets the ball on half back flank and runs towards the grandstand side wing. The forwards lead to him, he gets ready to kick, then dummies, stops, weaves, etc. Forwards have now stopped leading, he runs a couple more steps and kicks a nice high one off his left. It goes over everyone and is mopped up by Port at their half back. Either trying to do too much or not having an instinctive footy brain, I don’t know, but it is frustrating.

Brayshaw was great, Michie and Stretch were good. In some ways Stretch was generally the opposite of Terlich, creating with evasive runs, but then kicking to his teammates’ advantage.

Dunn was good in defence, he generally used it well but did manage to fluff a couple of rebounding efforts with poor decision making.

Hulett presented well, but couldn’t hold his marks today. Granted, conditions weren’t ideal.

Oscar was quiet, he did his bit in defence but didn’t do much on the rebound.

Smith is still learning- I hope he has a thick skin because he has to put up with Dunn screaming at him the whole game.

The two Kings competed well in the ruck and went forward for parts but didn’t really contribute there.

In the 2nd quarter Casey gave away 6 free kicks in their defensive 50- Stretch, White, Lumumba, and Hutchins (2) all holding the ball (they were all there too), and Oscar put the kick-in out on the full. If Port were able to kick a bit straighter, the game could have been over at half time.

Most of the MFC coaches were there (I think I saw everyone except Roos). Players that were there: M. Jones, Tom Mc, Gawn, and Tyson. I stay in one spot so there were probably others there too.

As long as Hogan says its okay. Would not want to be in his way.

For some reason, reading Terlich's name in any review [censored] me to tears.

Sound like Terlich is the same old same old in terms of his disposals, which would explain his non-appearance in the NAB games. There'd been plenty of good reports around him this off-season, for a while there I'd wondered if he was in the bad books for missing some of Tammi's yoga classes.

I ventured out to Windmill city Casey today and FWIW Here is my appriasal.

Gus Ready for round 1 moved easily definetely a class above and looks ok to go

Lamumba Did what he usually does , but he does have a habit of reducking back into trouble which surfaces in whatever level he plays. Not quite sure if he did enough to warrant recall

White is a very interesting footballer for  mine, he knows how to position himself to get the ball and reads play veryu well, got a lot of it but some possesions were for him a little wasted, Got pinged hangin on to one too long

Stretch Also got some nice possesions but I just think he might be too light for the rigours of AFL just yet

Dunny Also ready for recall, played his usual game for mine

Hullet First time I saw him and he is a bloody lump of a lad, Liked his endeavour and willingness to mix it with the big boys

Weeds Well I'm gonna get crucified for saying this but he reminds me a lot of "JUICE" Newton the way he moves and some of the same types of manerisms. He is raw but I was very impressed early with his positioning and willingness to run the lines and present. Took some very good grabs When he develops a stronger body he will definately be a very very good prospect for the MFC in future. I was watching him closely and one aspect which did peev me of is the Penchant that Casey coaches do have for rotations of talls. I know just a praccy match but this guy needs game time and exposure.

Terlich Racked up possesions but for me he just doesn't cut it! Possesions don't hurt you and wastage can be an issue.

Oscar Mac Michie , both OK

Thats about it!

You're right there RTG. It's early days. He has the height to play KPF, is a strong mark and is mobile. He just needs to grow into an AFL player's body and get experience at this level - perhaps even a whole season. I suspect however, that like Oscar McDonald last year, he will be eased into it with a couple of games late in the season.

It was a much better effort than last week when the players downfield didn't look like hitting a target. And it was also his first game of any sort for about 10 months.

Unless Hunt is injured, I think we will see him debut next week with Oliver. If he wasn't in calculations and is uninjured, he would have played today.

He certainly has the pace we need off half back and HL might not have done enough yet.

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
