Round 21 (Non MFC Games)

Featured Replies

Collingwood 91 point loss to Richmond doesn't make the Loss last week so bad.

Nick Riewoldt on his own in the forward fifty for over a minute as he didn't unnecessarily push up the ground. No Geelong player went near him and after a quick turnover and long kick Riewoldt took an easy mark and goal.

Why do forwards feel the need to push up the ground if they are just going to run back to the forward line anyway?

How bad was that "deliberate" against Saints just before ¾ time? It was a pretty crappy but rushed kick when off balance. I guess the umpire's coach will say - "correct decision" when it was just plain wrong. Fortunately didn't cost a goal.

When did penalties for incidents become dependant on whether the victim was injured or not, surely the role of the MRP is to hand down penalties to stop dangerous actions. I'd say it's more luck that apWingard was not seriously injured last night. But because no injury he will get off Scott free. Meanwhile Trengove gets 3 for a beautiful tackle that left Dangerfield groggy

You forgot the penalty that they initially applied to young Viney when Lynch carelessly became sandwiched between a braced Jack and Georgiou. 3 weeks as I recall even though Jack just stopped and was impacted.

"As Wingard was chasing down a ball deep in the Power's forward line, Hodge appeared to catch the Power star high. And to add a wrinkle of complexity to the MRP's job, at the moment of impact Wingard was up against the behind post, with the force of Hodge's bump appearing to knock his head into the post."

Remember, that is -

"appeared to"... "catch" ... him "high".

That's what we're calling a deliberate hip-slam to the back of the head made to an off-balance bent over player while not competing for the ball and requiring a change of momentum to make contact.

One of the things most obvious in that gif is the way Hodge clearly set himself to the angle then pushed off from his left foot. In fact, watching the feet, you can see that he jumped into Wingard's head, rather than simply continuing to run.

I would be interesting to hear someone argue that was his intended trajectory and Wingard being in the way was an accident, because if Wingard wasn't there, Hodge has just spontaneously changed direction in order to jump into the behind post.

Maybe the Hawks are back to their [redacted] habits of old?

Not "back to"......continuing.

I totally agree.....the ultra defensive game would change, by necessity, if forwards did this, especially strong fast agile ones. A bit reminiscent of "Pagan's paddock" when Carey was at his peak. We could do the same with Hogan particularly if we get more guys like Salem who can give a long accurate kick off half back.

We've started doing this more. In the last three weeks against Collingwood, North and the Dogs, it looked to me like we were making a clear effort for our forwards to stay forward of halfway, and when the ball was in the middle, inside the forward 50.

Wowee. They've definitely assembled an impressive young list over the last few drafts.

Five of their current top six possession getters - Steven (25), Riewoldt (32), Montagna (31), Gilbert (29), Geary (27).

They're playing well, exceeding expectations, but let's not forget they are being driven this year by a much older core which contended for flags 4 years ago (add to those players Fisher (33), Dempster (31) and Armitage (27); Scheider (31) also played well when on the senior list).

Stevie J staging for a free - didn't con the maggot that time.

Saints just couldn't buy a goal - and now cats hit the front.

Too much defence.

Geelong spare man back, take note melbourne.......

OMG - draw! Cats have stolen the Tigers' spot at 9.

Pretty happy for the Saints, I have liked the style of footy they have played this year...similar to Melbourne supporters, haven't seen a flag in donkey's years...

Cats now need to win their last two and hope one of North or Adelaide drop all their remaining games.

Pushing up hill!

That was one of the most interesting games of footy I’ve watched this year. I love the draw.

Saints were robbed at the end. A blatant 50 metre penalty not paid despite a Geelong player running over the mark by a clear 5m, then Bartel running over the line after Savage's behind.

You'd be filthy if you were a Sainter.

Yep saw them both.

What about the arm chop on Riewoldt by Bartel i think with 4 mins left inside 50, absolute shocker and the commentators did not even mention it.

It sounds like most of us wanted the Sainters to get up...

I thought he was staging too but the replay showed he copped high contact from the legs of a StKilda player running past. Wasn't much in it but the umpiring in recent weeks is all over the shop.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
