The AFL has given a green light to using future draft picks now.

While restricted to 1 year in advance now, I can see this going pear shaped and higher draft pick demands for valuable players especially for clubs like us.

I would be more confident in our ability to deal with this if Jackson and Roos were around for a while longer.

I cbf looking for the full report (if it's even out), but I do have a few questions that aren't answered in that link -

- Does the 1st round pick in at least 2 out of every 4 years apply to all teams, even if they aren't trading future picks?

- Is there any contingency clause to protect struggling teams? eg if you trade your future 1st round pick and finish last in that year, do you get the #1 pick back or are you stuck paying a stupidly high cost?

The rules in place should hopefully mean that won't happen - can trade either your 1st round or all other picks from the next draft only, and must use first round picks in at least 2 years in every 4 year period.only

The rules should allow for clubs to put their own protections on picks ie. not top 5. But not sure they will.

Really though clubs are so conservative, trades for big players so hard to come by and even harder now with free agency and players can't be traded without their permission. All up it's not really going to create too many circumstances where clubs are giving up future picks.

Swapping future picks I can see, ie your first for our first, but mainly clubs will need a really good player to swap this year and next years first pick.

It doesn't do much to fix the circumstances where a player is out of contract and wishes to be traded though which will now become an even bigger issue. All out of contract players should be restricted free agents or able to be franchised/tendered to avoid this system where a player doesn't have a contract but still has to be traded.

Surely this spells the end of the Lions PP????? If they need more trading power they can look to next years draft and trade away.....
