Social media is the AFL’s most damaging opponent, Mark Robinson writes

A couple of weeks ago at the freo game I had a group of guys sitting behind me and they said I would hate to be Jack Watts. Imagine being criticised the whole time, being hated and being abused and being judged on everything you do.

Social media these days can be brutal with what people can post.

Lol, so now the world has shifted away from journalists being the harshest critics, to social media.

Easy for Robbo to write this when he's the one with the higher amplification.

If you can't handle what a few people on social media say, I doubt being a topic of discussion on a top-rating cable TV show is going to make you feel fuzzy inside.

Hypocritical, hyperbolic POS article.

Well said Praha.

Footballers can let social media wash off them with a simple recognition that 'those people are irrelevant tossers'.

But the steady stream of media, from the highest profile to the lowest, making grand write-off pronouncements for the sake of sounding superior... it is harder to toss that away when it does a week-long media cycle and everyone you know is seeing it on the back page of their paper.

Shocking thing is, you'd barely know the difference between the media's steady stream of 'this guy is no good' and 'this guy is a future star' hyperbole, and some of the Casey Scorpions game threads on here.

Again, the standard case study of gobshite media, Damian Barrett - how many of his 'sliding doors' items each week are a cheap shot at someone already down, or just winding up speculation about contracts?

Interesting read. I personally hope our players resist reading Demonland and Watts proves his detractors wrong.

Didnt a D/L poster of significance write that the players ignore anything written on social media and laugh whenever social media B/S is brought up?

So do they complain about it when there form is only bad or when it personally refers to them?

Could a player of this decade go down as being the first to give footy away ,not because of bad form, but social media?

Slobbo Robbo was handed his pen license from a magical fairy at the bottom of a beer barrel, and gifted his career in journalism from a magical leprechaun. It is the only thing that makes sense.

Social media is lame as hell. No idea why people use that crap.

Facebook sites for afl teams are rubbish

So what are you doing here? Forums such as this ARE "social media".

I think the good players just worry about their own games.

Ablett jr wouldn't read papers, he doesn't go on footy shows.

It is rare to see Nat Fyfe in the media - only on game day.

Swan wasn't big in the media when he was getting a kick.

Pendles is only there game day.

Watson was never in the media until the saga.

Good players realise they need to get a kick, it doesn't matter what the media say.

The media is like a dumb rock.

Yep count me into the Watts Bandwagon as well! But if he was dropped to work on something like Intensity. Hunger, Desperation well I think he will do the same at this level as previous. However With his skill level and time to dispose simply must be in our best 22 Period!!

Fat [censored] can't see passed his own irony.

If the media stopped talking Jack Watts then maybe the every day people would as well. They built him up not social media.

He's just using this article to bemoan the hammering he gets on twitter because he's so dim-witted.

It's like when commentators say "Jack Watts has been unfairly maligned" at the start of a Melbourne game then proceed to criticise him and scrutinise every single one of his mistakes for the ensuring 2 and a half hours.

Robbo is actually one of the better journos when it comes to supporting players, but he is shifting the blame with this article. The media are far bigger culprits than a bunch of nobodies on Twitter and Facebook.

Says a guy posting on...social media?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
