We have quite a contingent to support the team but probably a lot less than the 'bigger' clubs. Its easy to see where the Football Department budget goes and why the AFL has introduced a 'tax' on clubs who exceed a certain 'football department' spend.

I was also Team Manager under Coach Carl Ditterich in 1979, as well as Legal adviser to the staff and players for many years.

Also dabbled in recruiting many years ago, before the draft existed and started the club's first members magazine, Demon's World. The first player interviewed was either the great Robbie or the current MCC President Steven Smith.

Happy to share some stories if they don't bore people and don't get me in too much trouble.

Actually I will share one now.

In 1979, as I said, I was Team Manager and we were playing at the old South Melbourne Lakeside ground. Phil Carman approached me in the rooms and said he had a bad case of the runs and didn't think he could play. He was of course very concerned and didn't know what to do. I grabbed the Doctor who gave him either an injection or a tablet, just before the game and he played. At each break he would leave the ground and hit the WC. By game's end thankfully he was feeling better.

BTW, he kicked 5 goals and was our best player.

Come out Redleg, who are you? Regarding Fabulous Phil, was that the day he took a screamer over the pack at the Members end of the ground? I was on the fence in the pocket and it was something to behold. My guess is that it probably was the day because apart from the mark, Phil looked listless all day and played a poor game. The whole team was poor and we lost surprise surprise. But it was worth enduring the loss just to see that mark. From memory Fabulous walked back from 30-35 metres and missed. He was an enigma.

Tony Sullivan let go in the back end taking a big mark one game back in the 70's!

Crackers Keenan told the story in his first book "Crackers" hilarious read, i leant it to someone and never got it back. Would love to read it again..

I wonder how many DLanders registered work inside the club (excluding Satyr) I would be interested to hear how harmonious and different the club is now.

PJ is doing a superb job from the outside....

My sister worked there on reception in the mid 80's.

There was a lot of fun at that time apparently. One was Synes and co locking Sis in a cupboard from memory (all innocent fun mind you!!)

I think that was a different day.

It's a very big list - I wonder how many are part-time, or even casual? But I'm very pleased to see we have a Head Doctor.

Agree Tunna. The medicos are really important. They need to be medicos who have excellent diagnostic skills and of high integrity. Ever since Andrew Daff left several years ago we have had a problem. Not helped by Dan Bates link with Dank. These guys play a critical role in injury management and it cannot be left to people like Misson and para medical people including physios to manage alone.

What probably would have been the greatest, was having Wayne "the Dominator" Johnston sitting outside the G in the car with WJ, while I was inside the MFC offices trying to convince our General Manager, to recruit him.

He agreed to take him, but the deal fell over when Carlton asked for Tom Flower as a trade. Tom had kicked 5 goals in the last game the year before and he was of course Robbie's brother. It was of course dismissed out of hand.

Wayne at that stage had not played a game for Carlton, was rejected twice by them and was a Prahran player. Typical of the scum to seek a fair player for a rejected player who wasn't even on their list.

It clearly worked out well for them.

I was also heavily into Jimmy Buckley early in his career and we again couldn't get the deal over the line.

Graham Yeats would be my biggest success, bringing him over from Prahran under 19's after a tip from his Coach, a mate of mine.

John Dellamarta and the late Wayne "Flash" Gordon were among a few other players I helped bring to the club.

We are currently about 2500 members short of our record. An unexpected win and maybe a couple of new players debuting, could lift the excitement and get us to a record level.

A lot of the staff I interact with have stayed the same, PJ trimmed at the top, the staff have always been a good team and helped the club drag itself back from the edge

You mean we won 12 premierships with ten percent less staff and a tenth of the income. Sack the lot of them now! Just like big Government most of them are just siting on Facebook.

Should we be paying all of our players the equivalent wages that they would have been earning in 1964 (adjusted for inflation of course) until they bring us No.13?

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
