When was the last time we were more than a third of the way through the season and had a percentage above 100%?

We have to go all the way back to 2016, when we were 4-4 with a percentage of 106.

In fairness we match up terribly against Carlton. They always seem to grow a leg against us, particularly in our improved years of 15,16 and round 2 this year.

Does anyone have highlights from that Round 5 2006 game v North Melbourne. Still vividly remember Nathan Thompson coming off in the final minutes, Byron Pickett playing one of his finer games for the Dees and Bate dominating with a goal outside 50

We've never beaten North in a home and away game on a Sunday as the home side....EVER! Infact we're 0-9.

We played them on a Sunday as the home side in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015 and lost them all.

None of those years were decent years. In fact, they were all shockers.

I reckon we smashed some hoodoos on the weekend:

The first time we beat Adelaide on a Saturday night since round 2 2001 (when Leoncelli kicked that goal on the siren)

The first time we've won a round 8 game since 2006 (Vs Hawthorn)

Funny aside, Leo was at the game and came charging up for a hug after the game!!

Very good point, except in 2001 we finished higher than North.

Our record at the MCG is becoming a mini-embarrassment. We've lost three on the trot there this year (all of them very winnable) after beating Carlton in Round 2.

Time to knock that one on the head along with the big hoodoo against North

I think it's not a coincidence - we've definitely played better footy at the narrower grounds - Etihad and Adelaide Oval.  I think maybe our zone holds up better.

Irrelevant. Writing off 9 attempts is ridiculous. It's embarrassing that we haven't beaten North for over 10 years. At least with a team like Hawthorn or Geelong you know they both had eras of greatness so it's not surprising if you haven't beaten them for a few years. North however have been a bog average middle of the road side.

We will beat them this weekend. If we don't, I'll burn the MCG to the ground.

could you make that punt road oval instead? and toss in the arden street oval as well for good measure

I'll probably do all 3 if we lose I'll be that disgusted and furious. Surely after all this improvement we can beat a bottom 4 side at our home ground!

I swear to god we better beat these front runners. For years, they have destroyed us with absolutely no reason. I hate every single one of their players, and their coach. We owe them a massive smashing!

I'm even dragging my partner along. Never lost a game when he comes, so I'm doing my bit. He hates me deeply, but it's worth it. Time to smash that embarrassing record!

I'd say Brent Harvey has had a fair bit to do with that.

Last year he kicked 6 against us and in 2015 he was the difference as well.

Waite and Higgins are the danger men this week.

Drag him along every week! May he bring us a premiership?!

Sounds like a really good healthy relationship, kudos to you both!

I would, but that would probably be relationship deal breaker, and he's kind of alright.

He already knows he has to come to every/all finals, and the kids will be Melbourne supporters. My work here is done.

You're right about losing consistently, but the breaking of these embarrassing records began in 2014.

2014 - Carlton and Adelaide, and Adelaide oval

2015 - winning Round 1 v GC, Geelong and Kardinia (whatever its called now), Collingwood, winning last round V GWS. And actually I think the Brisbane win broke a long losing run as well.

Some, (many), of them were pretty scrappy, but it was a glorious feeling to break those damned unhappy records.

You almost dont realise how bad the side was until you look at all the records. Sides must have waited with anticipation to play us and worse....... our team expecting to lose. So proud of the win against Hawks last year....Saints and crows this year. Lets follow up with a win this week and next.

Last time 3 in a row?

It's not relevant that we were VFL standard during a lot of those attempts? Rubbish. You've had a bad week LT. Just settle down.

To quote our COACH.

We do not live in the past. Our players are making their present and future.

THE PAST IS IRRELEVANT!

End of Story.

Here endeth the lesson.

It is ok for him he did not live it week after week. He was at Essendrug " doing whatever it took" .

We won three in a row last year - Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide.

That was clearly too much for us as we then proceeded to lose to Carlton.

When was the last time we won after one of our players was on the train wreck known as 'the footy show'?

Jack Watts is on this Thursday.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
