How were the umpires?

I have just put a pic of Dawes and Hogan on Twitter, have a look where Garlett is in the photo, hence my salivation......who is on him?, if somebody can put it here would be appreciated

My first venture out to see the boys this pre season, and the following are my highlights of the events:

The umpires, who continued to make game changing decisions against us.

I have always said we get the worst umpiring decisions that actually go against the run of play. Its pretty difficult if they can do this when we are playing ourselves.

I'm currently in Aukland on vacation so, assuming there's no MFC training today, I'm thinking of emulating TDI who reported on Richmond's training last Wednesday by taking a look at a NZ Vodafone Warriors training session (if I can find one)

A vacation in Auckland? Call it what you will.

Would be like Andrew Chan saying he was going to Nusa Kambangan Island for the white sand and palm trees.

So while form is difficult to take from matches such as these, there are a few things we can take from it - new positions for players, positions for players, and possible projects.

Positions

Garlett as FP.

Hogan as CHF.

Salem as HBF.

Lumumba as backman/wing.

Frost as tall defender.

Projects

Frost swingman?

Salem as HBF...

While I admire his attitude, I think dawesy is a really limited footballer. His best role is to be the second key forward and provide separation for the other key forward. This is the role he did with cloke and when we picked him up he was supposed to provide it for clark. Hopefully his biggest contribution during his time here is protecting hogan during his young career.

In terms of garlett, in very excited to have someone of his pace available to us. Last season we were the slowest team moving the ball from defence to offence. This would probably be put down to the style roos implemented - pushing numbers back in defence and when we get have the ball try and retain it. If we are going to become a better offensive team we need players with the pace drawing their

Opponents up to the wings and then streaming back into space ie slingshot. Think motlop christensen l jetta

Terlich on Kent I believe.

Not that I saw, Kent was dropping back onto a wing most of the time and then coming forward, picked up by one of the returning midfielders

He is definitely a second key forward, bot as the main man as he has had to be. That said he can be a very good second forward alongside of Hogan and any of Gawn, Howe, Pedersen or Fitzy and be very effective.

One thing Dawes does fantastically is to compete, he may not take a lot of one grabbers but his competitiveness may very well lead to many extra goals for a true small forward who knows how to shark a contest and capitalise on it

Correct, every time they went into attack, you would find Garlett buzzing around the feet of Dawes and Hogan, just for a note, JKH picks both Nev Jetta's and Jeff Garlett's brains as much as he can, I expect him to be alongside Jeffy in Rd 1

I would love to see Terlich as a tagger, but Roos tends not to use them, he was playing just in front of the key defenders taking the midfielders as they came down, and then taking the ball away if it was turned over

Jeffy tended to drop back onto the wing and then come forward, making it difficult for somebody to pick him up, see my Nev Jetta comment

So terlich, as a backman, was zoning off and sitting in front of the keys, while garlett, as a small forward, was roaming up the ground loose and coming back with the flight of the ball and kicked 4.

Hrrmmm, maybe putting 2 and 2 together Terl should have gone somewhere near his man

Dawes work very hard, presents over and over, has a strong body and good leadership. But it would be good for him to be the supporting big forward. That will hopefully happen as Hogan develops.

It wouldnt be surprising if it was Terlich as he has a tendancy to try and pluck the ball off on the intercept, but it does sound like the defense was not focused on as much this game, whilst running up and down the ground as Gartlett does can result in losing your opponent, if it was as easy as this small forwards would be kicking 10-15 goals a game and this is why, in my opinion, his opponent was obviously instructed to not pay very close care to him.

I can't recall anyone saying that Terlich was minding Gartlett.

In fact - one poster mentioned that Terlich was picking up Kent who was quiet.

But hey 2 and 2 doesn't always get you 4.

I don't have a problem with Terlich minding his man as a backman - I think he is very good at knowing when to play tight and when to zone off and when to attack a contest off his man - to me this has never been his problem.

His problem is I get the cold sweats when he gets the ball in his hands and he is deciding what to do with it and then I get the icy shivers when he executes.

I like this, as Dawes while not the best mark, he is predictable as to where he'll drop the ball to (i.e. usually front of him), so having Garlett and JKH loitering and knowing this, negates this flaw to some extent.

Don't forget Dawes ability to chase, pressure and how many crunching tackles he did last season.

He will protect Hogan all year long and Hogan will benefit from knowing Dawes won't bring the second defender to his contests.

It was a bit hard with the match ups because of the 10 Casey players, Dunn would always mark the resting ruckman if there was one and Pedersen would do the same, Tommy Mc spent a lot of the game on his brother who was played forward (I think some got over excited and confused Oscar with Frost as well), Garlett was up and down the ground and was a difficult match up, he put himself in some throw in stoppages as well

I called Terlich's game as I saw it, besides which he didn't miss a kick yesterday, although some will swear he did, same as Matty jones, only clanger from the maligned was one from Grimes, and Nathan Jones told him he was too slow to kick it, which he took on board, and McKenzie who took the wrong option once, but Nathan Jones fluffed a kick as well as did Viney

Well done TDI. The observers who translate one miskick into many, or amplify the 'mistakes' of their favourite whipping boys drive me a bit nutty, so I like reading your more objective reality. Matt Jones is the biggest victim I reckon. I think his disposal is actually good, and his decision making very good, and I base that on last year. The other one is Grimes, who some imagine is not going to get a gig for round 1. He will.
