Paul Roos is confident the future of Melbourne Demons is bright after successful AFL Draft

Carlton are the fascist bully boys of the AFL and much punished for that mindset (but not for their tanking - the Kreuser Cup) but was this thread not about MFC's bright future?

I reckon Jon Ralph trawls Demonland as virtually all of his questions have been discussed on here, ad nauseam, this year. There may have been a negative tone to the questions but what do you expect when the club has consistently poor. Some nice responses from Roos too. I cringed a bit when I saw the title (heard it all before) but that was a good interview.

I was not a real Mark Neeld fan either but it was great to hear Roos be so open about him. He was a tough coach in the wrong place at the wrong time. McCartney the same.

Wrong generation... Neeld may have worked 15 years ago but times have changed significantly...

JR: Brendan McCartney is a massive get. Are you shocked he was sacked at the Bulldogs?

PR: No doubt. Brendan had the Dogs on the right path and that’s the thing that appealed — they were teaching a brand. How to play AFL finals football.

Still cant believe we landed B Mac

Yep - I've been absolutely delighted with our bottom two finishes for the last 8 or so years.

I agree. They've slightly rectified it in the last trade draft period, but the age profile of that list is in a pretty terrible state. 11 players over 27 and they're nowhere near contending. I'll give them 3 potentially high quality players amongst the under 23's in Menzel, Cripps and Jaksch, and Menzel's the only one that's shown anything at senior AFL level.

and only 9 after the this last trade and draft in the 21-25yo bracket which is easily the lowest in the comp with come clubs having 17. Its hard to contend in future years without a solid core from the 21-25 group

JR: What is your take on what has been a catastrophic failure to develop high picks at this club?

PR: The more I delve into it, it was the perfect storm. There was interference from coaches and managers and tension between them and then that rubs off on to players. They are quick to pick up on problems and they picked up on a lot of them. Then you have a hard coach (in Mark Neeld) come in and it might have been good for another club, but not Melbourne. That was the circumstance over six or seven years.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
