I like Billy Evans as a smokie. Tough Scott Selwood type from the Bendigo Pioneers. His problem was his leadership and willingness to help the team. Skipper of the pioneers. Probably pick 25-35 mid year then drifted to late pick by close of year. He is a perfect half back / inside mid. Think Jed Adcock also.

If not pick 53, then a rookie #2 selection.

On a side note you do see the difference in value between 53 and 83.

Unusual to pass on a 3rd round pick, considering where we are, though not unusual to pass on a 5th round pick.

Correct, but it looks like the club disagrees.

I think either the best available mature mid- Matthew Panos seems like he could be the one, his goal-kicking ability is certainly a bonus.

The next best option I think is to take the best slider, irrespective of position.

I do wonder if he leaves just a little wriggle room with the later picks for more needs based ie. if we go midfielder, midfielder, midfielder then for pick 53 he'll promote a tall a couple of spots in the list if they are about equal. But otherwise I'd be doing it exactly like that. Straight down the list with DFA mixed in.

Of course hopefully the DFA's are in the draft pool as well so you can just call them out and have them locked in. I also wonder if there's a cut off with the list where if it gets below a certain point we consider passing on 53 and getting a bunch of players training before the PSD. 53 is probably too good a pick to do that as there'd still be 15 or so picks before PSD pick 2. But if we had 73 I'd be doing that, instead of rushing in for a guy who's most likely to still be there in the next draft I'd pass on it and evaluate the options.

The other thing is if we are going for an out of the box and probably poorly rated DFA (see James Sellar) whether we could save money and flexibility and pass on 53 and pick that same player with the 3rd round rookie spot and have 5 rookies and 39 list players.

I'd hope we rate the draft better than that though.

Just for something a little different - Brett Eddy. Would be interested at 53 as he would take pressure off Hogan and we'd have a little more dynamic forward line.

Best position/role: Full forward.
Strengths:
Ready to play – Eddy is a well performed state leaguer and the best immediate key forward outside the AFL with his play particularly through the first half of the season dominant with 50 goals from his first 12 games.
Scoreboard impact – Eddy kicked an excellent 67 goals from 21 games in the SANFL and does it in a variety of ways. He is a good finisher and capable of finishing both from set shots and general play and is not purely a mark and goal forward as someone who gets for a key forward an unusually good balance of goals from not only set shots but also general play.
Speed and agility – Eddy on the lead has excellent pace and the ability to create separation to take easy uncontested marks out in front. He also when running back into goal is exceedingly dangerous and if you let him goalside he will consistently take advantage of that opportunity for easy goals just running into goal. He for a key forward also has a rare ability to change direction, he can quickly go from leading at full pace up at the ball to changing direction and turning around and sprinting back into goal at pace which makes him so dangerous running back into goal. He can also be running at full pace and take a sidestep to lose his opponent. At Eddy’s height no one else has the ability to change direction as quickly as Eddy which allows him to easily run back into goal to get that separation to make him near unstoppable in those situations. He also is a capable pressure forward who will chase and tackle, his tackle numbers are not high but he is capable applying tackling pressure when used in the forward 50.
Marking ability – He is a strong mark overhead and take it at the highest point consistently. He reads the flight particularly well and generally better than opposition defenders which allows him to get to the drop of the ball consistently. He is an excellent mark on the lead, creating separation and taking it overhead or out in front consistently as appropriate. He can take his marks v opposition contact and has the strength to his marking overhead. In the 1v1 contest he uses his body exceptionally well to protect the drop of the ball, just nudging his opponent out of the contest and he also often will with one hand hold his opponent out of the contest and take it cleanly one handed.
Weaknesses:
Presence – Eddy while a strong mark overhead he is not a key forward with a monster presence who will crash the packs or take the monster pack marks consistently, while strong enough he is not as strong or big bodied as some of the bigger key forwards in the game.
Ground level ability – At ground level Eddy can at times lack cleanness and as a result he will often when the chance is there elect when he can to kick a soccer goal without picking it up, it works for him but ideally he would be pick it up more below his knees and make certain of it.
What I expect will improve:
The reality with Eddy at 25 years of age is you draft him for who he is today rather than who you hope he becomes as he other than perhaps some slight endurance gains and strength gains probably will continue to play much the same game.
Who he can become?
Eddy has the feel of something like a poor man’s Jay Schulz.
When will he be ready to play?
Eddy based on his strong SANFL League form is season one ready to play.
How to best utilise him?
Eddy is best utilised as a key forward.
Interpretation of his numbers:
Eddy’s number through 2014 were terrific and a big step up from his injury affected 2013 season. His total goals and goals per game numbers are excellent. His disposal and mark per game numbers particularly over the first half of the season were strong. He has a nice balance between uncontested and contested marking numbers. His goals came from a balance of set shots and goals from general play which is pleasing. The major issue from a numbers standpoint is the story of two halves this season for Eddy, with his second half to the season while still acceptable, not dominant like it was in the first half.

Hmm someone to think about. He looks more like a medium forward than a true marking tall on those highlights, despite the 194cm. So he'd need to have a fair set of legs on him to have the endurance and speed to pull that off at AFL level.

If we go McCartin at 3 he'd be a big no no I'd say because what's the point with Dawes, Hogan, McCartin and others of having a guy who in all likelihood is just short term depth. If we don't then yeah he could be worth pick 53. If the recruiters think he can bring some of what he did this year to AFL.

I'd be thinking more rookie draft though. Tall blokes just don't do much when given a chance later on (Pods aside). Most of the best have been on AFL lists for years because they are rated and drafted early even if they wont deliver for years.

And after all we do have Pederson and Fitzy for some depth there. I will be very happy if we grab McCartin at #3 but happy for both 40 amd 53 to be mids or small forwards/defenders (as after all, this is about the range we got JKH and Jetta).

Okay, let me clarify as best kick in this draft class who isn't also terrified of being a footballer.

With Brayshaw and McCartin at picks 2 and 3, and Barry and Evans gone, it's fair to say our most significant 'need' will be some outside class - possibly a pacy wingman that can kick, and a pacy half back flanker that can kick. Hopefully Stretch and Toumpas can come on over the next couple of years to help fill these roles but there is obviously a lot of development required.

Without seeing any of the players in the range:

I really hope that Connor Menadue (20-40 range) is still there at 40, if he is a bit of an Isaac Smith type.

I like the sound of Dan Howe as a 191cm half back flanker if, as Paige says, he is a bit like Langdon from Collingwood.

Tom Wilkinson from Sandringham (182cm Andrew Gaff-type elite runner) also sounds promising. At least we will know plenty about him given the Brayshaw and Tyler Roos connection.

My dream draft would be to get Brayshaw, McCartin and Oscar Mc and then pick up the classiest player and smallest player in the draft - Caleb Daniel.

Not only would he have cult following, he's elite in every aspect - skills, endurance (16.1 beep) and speed.

Sure he's not going t take pack marks, but neither does Boomer Harvey.
