Why?

Every year we have the best 3-5 18 year olds and we are told that these are the best and to pick anyone else is a reach.

And every year, the best player(s) come from outside those players and from the following half a dozen picks.

I don't like the way the 'consensus' ruins this club's drafting.

The consensus on the 'consensus' should be that it is almost always wrong.

Yes yes and yes.

I argued with all and sundry that Toumpas was the obvious choice over Wines for that exact reason.

I will argue that the expert consensus was Toumpas was always a higher rated draft pick than Wines. Therefore on all expert consensus we did not select incorrectly.

However - the expert opinions are almost always wrong.

Thinking outside the box has yielded Lucas Cook and Mark Neeld. No thanks.

Thinking inside the box yielded us Toumpas instead of Wines.

So there is no right and no wrong in this argument.

rebound drafting

Have you (or anyone else) seen the movie Draft Day.

It's a horrible NFL sponsored movie that came out recently where a GM trades for the top pick giving up a ransom of picks, then take the player he would've at pick 10ish anyway, then somehow (through complete BS) manipulates the draft to get back to exactly where he would've been anyway plus an extra pick for a running back to make the coach happy.

Either way it's similar to your theory!

I like your plan, but why stop there. My plan is grab Petracca and Brayshaw, both showing a heap in their first year and turning us in to a destination club as players see the opportunities that Jones, Tyson, Viney, Petracca and Brayshaw could bring. All of a sudden we sign Will Hoskin-Elliott who becomes the next Nat Fyfe and he doesn't even have to put his skinny frame in the guts. Instead he plays wing and half forward. Oh Dangerfield jumps on as well. Then in Dangerfield, WHE and Petracca we have 3 unstoppable forwards/midfielders who rotate at will. All Dawes and Hogan have to do is create space, chase, tackle and bring the ball to ground. Garlett, Kent and JKH are sniffing around the forward line as well. Oh and Bernie Vince and Salem become AA rebounding defenders and Jeremy Howe is the ultimate utility who kicks 50 goals whilst playing half his time on a wing and a spare defender. Gawny gets injured in the prelim and Jake Spencer kicks the winning goal of the grand final on the run from 50 out on the boundary.

outside the box thinking would have had us trading P-1 to the Swans for P-6 & 14 back in 2009

Consensus wrong picks: Toumpas, Blease, Tapscott, Morton, Maric (all rated where we took them)

Bolter wrong picks: Cook, Strauss, Gysberts (all 3 of these guys were likely rated 10-20 picks below where we took them)

I'd rather Jesse Hogan than Rohan and Jetta. I'm pretty sure Hogan would've at least got a touch in the grand final.

theres many ways it can be played out, but I've got a feeling that the big fella Petracca will take a little while to develop a tank. an engine? let him go for 2 yrs, & then get him back on the rebound, when he's homesick. the opposite of $ulky who had a tank but not much else.

Take Brayshaw & Lever. Lever the swingman utility, & turn him into a goddard type. then next 2015 trade period, get one of shiel/treloar/Kennedy, etc.

Then in the 2016 trade period, buy Petracca back for some sort of trade...

I'm pretty sure that Rohan & Jetta will do better next time around. actually I bet the whole bloodE Swans team turn up to play next time around.

& I'd rather see Jesse Hogan play a G/F in red & blue, rather than with the swines... ;)

If we left Petracca to GWS at pick 4 [by taking Lever] then we would want to first have a firm understanding next year that they will facilitate us getting one of their top homesick mids in preference to any other aspirants. No way I would be taking Lever over Petracca unless we have this undertaking first.

p.s. I hope that this isn't 'draft-tampering'?

Thinking outside the box has yielded Lucas Cook and Mark Neeld. No thanks.

That wasn't thinking outside the box.

That was selecting a kid who wasn't well-equipped to cope at the next level simply because the consensus said he was an AA U/18 CHF, and selecting a coach because he'd been part of successful clubs and coached successful players, and consensus was that these were key indicators of a future quality coach, when in fact his communication skills and an ability to build a good culture, rather than operate within an existing one, were more important in today's game.

the problem was they were outside the box = damaged goods, & there just wasn't due thinking at all; nor intelligence applied.

Surprised that the poll associated with this thread consistently puts Lever as the third pick (presumably after St Kilda takes Petracca and we take Brayshaw). Not quite sure why Demonlanders go against the experts and place Lever ahead of McCartin and Wright, especially when we have just added Frost to our list who plays down back?

Because he's said he 'wants' to play midfield, and apparently every AFL midfielder over 190cm becomes Nathan Fyfe.

Look at the film.

Brayshaw can kick.

Wright can Mark and kick from 55.

The rest are scrubbers.

Wright could be the next Centurian Coleman Medalist.

Have a frikken look you group thinking ,ball swallowing ,clowns.

'Biff' if you are just looking at the film then you're the clown. Wright will never be a Coleman medalist as long as Mark Jackson's a points to the ground.

Just a technicality - after reviewing Mark Jackson and his handstand I believe it points to the sky.

still think we need another forward, we have seen how exposed we were with just Dawes up forward, you would expect hogan and dawes would both have occassional niggling injuries at best and maybe the odd suspension as well, which leaves our forward line with no scoring power. I like wright as he can act as a ruck and forward giving us options.

I think Jacko was told he'd never be a a star as long as his pointed to terror firma, so he went trying to spot a star

I see no aggression and little pack marking with Wright. More a bloody big kid who moves pretty well who therefore takes some marks. His kicking is very good though.

Would love to know how you think he'll kick 100 goals though considering he doesn't trouble the scorers all that regularly in junior footy. But if he can kick 50 that's nothing to laugh about.

Don't know if I was watching the right highlights but it looked like Wright's maximum distance was just on 50. I certainly cidnt see any set shots from outside 50

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
