Trade Talk on Radio

Featured Replies

Weren't we linked to Merrett a few weeks back?

Doesn't seem to be much trade action going on with Richmond, Essendon, Bulldosg, West Coast or Adelaide with player recruitment.

That's because trade week hasn't started yet and 99% of these so called potential trades being discussed right now, are pure fallacy.

I wouldn't be surprised if we went for Merrett.

Depends on cost, like always, but has shown he is capable of playing both ends.

Given Brisbane CEO Greg Swann's public views on the worth of James Frawley, we should manage to get Merrett for pick #75 without any trouble.

Mahoney confirmed our interest in both Merrett and Frost this morning on SEN.

Interesting listening to Mahoney. Got his head on that bloke (good).

The last bit was curious. I'd expect Watts and Jimmy to be involved as names thrown up from time to time.

I think Josh (as does the club) already knows Frawley will get 3.

Curious as to what/who we will get from the Cattery.

The Filth seem more co-operative than often before.

Well played Josh :)

McKenna says he was given no specific reason from the club for his dismissal, but was not surprised by the outcome. His sacking comes after a two-week review of the club's football department.

James Frawley

James Frawley has officially left the Melbourne Football Club, telling the club of his intention to exercise his right as an unrestricted free agent.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has confirmed the club's interest in Frawley. Clarkson said today that the club would see how Frawley's situation plays out this week, but the club was definitely still keen on him.

Mitch Clark

Clark's manager Colin Young has told NAB Trade Radio today that Clark's passion for the game is as strong as he's ever seen. It comes after Clark chose Geelong as his preferred club for next season.

St. Kilda

Summary of today's Trade Radio talk:-

James Frawley

Unrestricted free agent Frawley will almost certainly join the club when the period opens tomorrow, with the Hawks trumping the Cats for the All-Australian defender's services. He will join Brian Lake in the Hawks' defence, who this afternoon agreed to re-sign with the Hawks for season 2015.

Bulldogs

The Western Bulldogs are preparing themselves for a huge assault on this year's NAB Trade and Free Agency period, with CEO Simon Garlick telling NAB Trade Radio the club was in the hunt for Sydney's Sam Reid and Tim Membrey.

With Liam Jones expected to leave the club for the Blues, Garlick said Reid, Membrey and GWS youngster Kristian Jaksch "certainly figure" in their discussions.

James Hird

Today's trade news was surrounded by the controversy at Essendon. Is he still coach at the Bombers?

Kane Lucas

Carlton is preparing to lose out-of-contract midfielder Lucas, with the club confirming on NAB Trade Radio he's on the trade table. Lucas played just seven games this season.

Shaun Higgins

Western Bulldogs CEO Simon Garlick has told NAB Trade Radio they may still match any restricted free agent offer for Higgins who is expected to be offered a contract by the Kangaroos.

Levi Greenwood

Richmond says it has expressed an interest in out-of-contract North Melbourne midfielder Greenwood, but head of football Dan Richardson expects him to stay at the Roos. The Tigers say they don't expect to trade any of their players this season

Daniel Gorringe

Marcus Ashcroft has told NAB Trade Radio the club wants to keep Gorringe, despite him requesting a trade. The Suns are also still in the hunt for Collingwood's Dayne Beams and Sydney's Nick Malceski.

Ahmed Saad

Saad says he will be allowed to return to training at an AFL club on January 1, 2014. He told NAB Trade Radio he had spoken with several AFL clubs, but did not yet have any commitment from a club to sign him.

WJ - Saad is serving an 18 month suspension for taking a banned supplement. The penalty is slightly longer than the three weeks some people are suggesting the Essendon players served with show cause notices will get

Waite and Higgins

North Melbourne has signed former Carlton forward Jarrad Waite to a two-year deal.

The unrestricted free agent will join the Roos in season 2015.

In more good news for Roos fans, the club has also lodged paperwork for Western Bulldogs restricted free agent Shaun Higgins.

The Dogs have 72 hours to match the Kangaroos offer.

I would like to see us have a crack at Greenwood now- surely he's gone if they're spending cash on spuds in FA

Something thats been confusing me is all the players we have been linked to are either KP players or flankers - where are all the midfielders? Merrett, Frost, Lamumba etc we need mids mids mids

Relax, we've got Danger*

*probably not true

Something thats been confusing me is all the players we have been linked to are either KP players or flankers - where are all the midfielders? Merrett, Frost, Lamumba etc we need mids mids mids

Goes with the Roos philosophy of bringing in tall players via trade and targeting midfielders in the draft

Makes sense too, at pick 2 for example Brayshaw will be ready to play senior footy while Wright and Mcartin could take years

Father son nominations are about to be done in the next few minutes, lets hope nobody bids on Billy before round 2

We could trade some backs for mids - potentially (hate to say it) Howe, Grimes or Garland (especially if he doesn't sign a contract soon - his last year before FA). Not saying we should.

It would be consistent with Roos 'anyone is tradeable' and his 'trade/FA' philosophies especially if we are eyeing off GWS mids and they need experienced defenders. eg Frost plus a mid for an experienced defender, afterall GWS need to shed players

Edited by Lucifer's Hero

After listening to Robbie Flower talk of his joy of playing for the team he supported as a kid, getting Stretch would be sweet, and counter to the cynical mercenary money grubbing dross we've had to wade through in recent years...

I'd say there are smoke screens all over the place, mate. Roos seems to be a master of this. We'll quietly go about our business and you watch. We'll land a decent mid or two this off season.

Anyone have a link to trade radio? Is father and son bidding on now?

pick 16 can't be port's 2nd round pick

Nathan Brown talking about the fact the Blues didn't get a compo pick for Waite. Says that it's unfair that Dees will get something for Frawley but Carlton won't.

Then says you can't base it on age…… Half of the compo pick is based on the players age! What an absolute [censored] he is an idiot it is unfathomable that these guys

get paid for this.

Problem is these hacks are speculating because the AFL doesn't disclose the formula. No point complaining about Frawley, the compensation is based on what the Hawks are willing to pay him, and thats a hefty contract. These people need to stop comparing players directly and saying he is worth this or that...

I still think the compensation should also be factoring in what the club that the player is leaving from is prepared to pay to keep the player.... I think that almost says more about the worth of the player than the contract offered by the new club!

Stretch is now a mfc player.......Nth bid it's 2nd round pick.....It will cost us pick 39

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
