I think that was wholly down to uncertainty as to how he would recover from an horrific broken leg.

Wonder if it was as bad as Selwood's knee?

Viney was always going to be gold at 26. I think Viney held back in the Nationals that year, and that helped us.

Can you imagine him holding back in any game though, let alone the Nats?

Stringer was being touted as a strong candidate for pick one prior to the leg injury.

Mate, no one is arguing about Viney wanting Wines.

I am ! The Ox suggests it and it now becomes fact ?  I becomes pretty suspicious of "facts" when no-one actually mentions this "fact" until a year or two after the event when Wines has become a star and Toumpas a washout.

What is absolute fact is the Toumpas was higher rated by so called experts than Wines was. (What is also fact is so called experts get their rankings wrong as much as they get them right)

He was a strong candidate for a mini-draft pick prior to the leg break.

Wines had the mature body, Toumpas didn't. A big difference to the immediate playing team. If you don't have the size, it doesn't matter how much talent you have. You'll just get pushed off the ball. Years of watching Cale Morton has shown this.

Yeah, I think he did. He was a little bit underdone. He definitely taken it easy. Pretty sure he got his jaw broken in the VFL that year also. It wasn't a consistent year for him, I know that much, he wasn't fully wound up. If I were GWS I would've taken him. Viney was a safe pick. Either way, I think GWS should cop more heat over their picks, than we cop over selecting Toumpas. Also, they seem to be exempt from criticism for targeting Scully as well (who has been an absolute failure).

"All picked exactly where they were supposed to be" ... because these Phantom Drafts were done 2-3 days prior to the AFL draft when the inside word on the top order was out.

For most of the year O'Rourke was ranked between 12-15 before he bulleted up to #2 and pushed Toumpas down to #4.

Quote on AFL.com "Wines. Melbourne. They love his fierce attack on the footy and have been big fans for some time".

Fact: Melbourne was keen on Wines for all of 2012 until the last week before the draft.  Viney was overruled. Fact. I have spoken to Todd and it was confirmed. Evidence? what do you want ... a stat dec.

I wanted as first rounders :

Salem YES Petracca YES Brayshaw YES Oliver YES Weideman YES Watts YES  Wines YES Morton YES (I did not forsee the lack of heart) Scully YES Trengove YES

but was against

Toumpas NO Cook NO Grgic NO

What a load of Crapola. Todd didn't want Toump that bad that h invited him to live in his house with his whole Family. Fed him and all! Imagine having to work with a kid you didn't want and THEN having to go home and watch TV (no pun intended) with him as well!!!

Yes... irony. Look it up in the dictionary.

Todd and his family are all class. They knew Jimmy T as well and yes helped him settle in. It was never personal against Jimmy.

So you are pouring scorn on a poster who has a very good track record of inside industry knowledge on Dland and you are claiming TViney would put his own personal pride before professionalism and the bigger picture, that is the club he loves, that his son plays for???

Righto then.

Got nothing to do with irony Mate. Maybe you should look it up. They are all class, that's why they took him in. Made him and his Family friends for life from what I hear. Even Jack was quoted as saying he wanted Toump over Ollie. Try to keep to the facts.

Moonie must be feeling left out, sticking up for you in his sycophantic manner. (Look that one up)

I just read through 3 pages until I found what I was wanting to say.

Jack Viney is on record as saying Toump is a better player than Ollie.

Let's make sure Jack doesn't follow in his old mans footsteps when it comes to list management.

It will be interesting to see how we go with Oliver as he only came into contention later in the season and touted as our top pick in the last couple of weeks

Darcy Parish was certainly "conventional wisdom" for most of the year.

yes, but that hair ???

why, when the good vintage arrives on our doorstep, Mr R

I suspect young Viney towed the company line when he had a pretty fair idea what was going to go down.

I wouldn't put much emphasis on his comments.

When Parish starts playing well.

89 posts... mostly vitriolic and in spite. Victriolic is under V in the dictionary and is an adjective. It sums up your style.

The truth about Wines hurts, so don't get angry to posters. Get angry about Neeld setting back MFC for another 3 years.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
