Australia has a long history of bigotry and racism (sometimes) masquerading as "humour" and then blaming the victim for being a sook and not being able to take it. It's ok to say others should laugh it off but it's easy to say when you're not on the end of it. I'm sure people dont always take offence it depends on the context and nature of it but at the end of the day this stuff wouldn't be tolerated in any other modern workplace and if someone takes offence and has raised it as an issue then it is inappropriate to continue with that behaviour whether you think they are being a sook or not.

If you want to see real racism at work go and live in the Middle East, as I have done, and see how itinerant workers from India, Pakistan and the Philipines are treated. Or Africa and the tribalism there.

I'm not defending the problems we have here or our past history with Indigenous people but to suggest we are somehow worse is ridiculous.

Racism, Homophobia, Sexism are a world wide problem and in many ways from a global perspective we are much more inclusive than most.

There is Harry O the footballer, whom on a good day I rate and most days he can be as ordinary as Ive seen. Strangely a good finals player which seems hardly our priority just atm.

Then theres Mr Lumumba who just seems a big mouth , attention seeking sod.

All things aside it is good to see Roos proactive. Bodes for a healthy clean out.

Putting to one side the various comments regarding HL's personality profile, it would seem that as a footballer, the 2 concerns are:

1. Is he past his prime?

2. Even in his prime, he was basically a '2 trick pony' I.e. Runs fast & kicks long

If (and yes, it is a big if,) we were blessed by the Football Gods and could line up with Hogan, Dawes and Clark up front, then getting someone who can pump the ball forward quickly to guys in one-on-one contests might be of some appeal.

The indirect and glacial-like forward progress we displayed this season would have frustrated the living suitcase out of any key forward.

There would be an ongoing problem with personalities and their views, of the type that may or may not recur at any football club. It's up to Paul Roos to find out, and to see whether HL fits in with his plans. I'm happy to leave it to him.

Didn't say Australia was "totally" tolerant and yes theres work to do - but the high and mighty's of this world like the character this thread is all about, are more interested in self promotion than the actual issue and will act to blow it way out of proportion to what it really warrants.

personally, i'm all for bringing lumumba in. we will get 3, 4 or more years of solid service out of him.

my worry is the pies' demands. they held gws over a barrel for heath shaw, who's a commensurate player, and there's no doubt they'll try and do the same for us.

The only question we should be asking is "does he improve our on-field performance?" If the answer is yes then we should go after him.

For those who think he has too many deficiencies, how does he match up to Grimes? Terlich? Matt Jones? If we could get him and Malceski as our half backs for next year I think it improves our side and shores up our defence. Then we can focus on the midfield.

Personally I would prefer we could pass on this, but the reality of where our list is at and the amount of non AFL standard players we have means we can't afford to pass on proven players, even ones who carry far to much baggage for my liking.

It will all be in how much it will cost us, we need to get him for as little as possible, as he is only ever going to be a stop gap measure, while our young players get some decent development time.

Personally I'm all for bringing in characters with slightly left of centre personalities.

Surely you remember Jacko, Jakovich, Pyke, Schwartz etc..
