WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HERITIER LUMUMBA

What has this world come to that you can no longer hang crap on your mates for looking like a couple of batties.

etc. etc.

We may just have reached a new low.

Why not! Boy can play. Wouldn't want to give up too much for a 27-year-old but he's an All-Australian and averages 20 a game which make him elite at our club!

The club will not get a dollar of mine if that [censored] ends up in the red and blue.

Australia has a long history of bigotry and racism (sometimes) masquerading as "humour" and then blaming the victim for being a sook and not being able to take it. It's ok to say others should laugh it off but it's easy to say when you're not on the end of it. I'm sure people dont always take offence it depends on the context and nature of it but at the end of the day this stuff wouldn't be tolerated in any other modern workplace and if someone takes offence and has raised it as an issue then it is inappropriate to continue with that behaviour whether you think they are being a sook or not.

If you want to see real racism at work go and live in the Middle East, as I have done, and see how itinerant workers from India, Pakistan and the Philipines are treated. Or Africa and the tribalism there.

I'm not defending the problems we have here or our past history with Indigenous people but to suggest we are somehow worse is ridiculous.

Racism, Homophobia, Sexism are a world wide problem and in many ways from a global perspective we are much more inclusive than most.

You are dead right. It seems a lot of people that cry racism haven't left their own backyard. In my experience Australia is one of the most tolerant societies going around, sexism, racism , the lot.

There's a lot of spilt milk here and a shite load of people standing around crying over it - mostly to draw attention to themselves.

Look at me, look at me, I'm a new age liberal with feelings. Harden the F up and stop self promoting.

I'm all about improving society and helping people in need but there are a lot more worthy causes.

The gay community would get more support from me if they just dropped this "woe is me" bollocks

No one gives a shite what you do with your [censored], just grow up.

There is Harry O the footballer, whom on a good day I rate and most days he can be as ordinary as Ive seen. Strangely a good finals player which seems hardly our priority just atm.

Then theres Mr Lumumba who just seems a big mouth , attention seeking sod.

Paul has ideas and in the main theyre good, but id baulk , personally at Harry O. Think not enough up side to counter the precious.

just my opinion

The club will not get a dollar of mine if that [censored] ends up in the red and blue.

I'm not saying YOU are an idiot. But what you have just said, makes you sound like a big idiot.

All things aside it is good to see Roos proactive. Bodes for a healthy clean out.

Putting to one side the various comments regarding HL's personality profile, it would seem that as a footballer, the 2 concerns are:

1. Is he past his prime?

2. Even in his prime, he was basically a '2 trick pony' I.e. Runs fast & kicks long

If (and yes, it is a big if,) we were blessed by the Football Gods and could line up with Hogan, Dawes and Clark up front, then getting someone who can pump the ball forward quickly to guys in one-on-one contests might be of some appeal.

The indirect and glacial-like forward progress we displayed this season would have frustrated the living suitcase out of any key forward.

In any event, "in Roos we trust"

I'm not saying YOU are an [censored]. But what you have just said, makes you sound like a big [censored].

Fair enough that's your opinion. My opinion is that the bloke is a f l o g which this site deemed worthy of replacing with [censored]....what sort of a suppressive regime is running demonland?

Where does Dr Gonzo say or even suggest this? If you're going to take issue with what he says, take issue with what he actually says.

The argument about whether it's worse somewhere, anywhere else is as irrelevant as the argument that it's better somewhere, anywhere else. We're responsible for what we do. At least we ought to be.

You are dead right. It seems a lot of people that cry racism haven't left their own backyard. In my experience Australia is one of the most tolerant societies going around, sexism, racism , the lot.

So are you saying it's OK to have a little racism in Australia because it's much worse overseas? That's like saying it's OK to have some bashings in Australia because overseas they've got wars.

The idea that Australia is totally 'tolerant' is a myth.

I seriously doubt problems between HL and Collingwood were just over a homophobic scribble on a poster. There would be an ongoing problem with personalities and their views, of the type that may or may not recur at any football club. It's up to Paul Roos to find out, and to see whether HL fits in with his plans. I'm happy to leave it to him.

Really like John Ralph's piece in the Sun. Represents my views perfectly.

Does for me also.

Didn't say Australia was "totally" tolerant and yes theres work to do - but the high and mighty's of this world like the character this thread is all about, are more interested in self promotion than the actual issue and will act to blow it way out of proportion to what it really warrants.

personally, i'm all for bringing lumumba in. we will get 3, 4 or more years of solid service out of him.

my worry is the pies' demands. they held gws over a barrel for heath shaw, who's a commensurate player, and there's no doubt they'll try and do the same for us.

for mine, it's a fourth round pick.

I would like Harry O (or Hertier L) to come to the club. Many of the tweed jacket wearing, Smoker's Stand types might spit out their sherry in sheer disbelief when he spouts some Marxist theory off to them with a touch of the Dalai Lama thrown in for good measure.
'It's Bolshy-ness I say, pure Bolshyness! Baaaah!'

Who said we are worse? Stop making excuses and justifications for discrimination. "Yeah we massacred the indigenous people but at least we didn't send them to the gas chambers"

Haha you are a dead set moron. You probably don't even see the irony in your post having a go at people for being self-centred and then say "they'd get more support from me if" - its not about you, no one gives a stuff about you.

This bloke is a chore but he backs himself and is a winner.

Frankly, every club has blokes that are chores. You both learn to get on with it and work together, evidently the Pies and he can't do that anymore but for the right price he would be very welcome.

I wonder what that price is ?

Might be a more determinant factor than others

I heard he had a decaf soy latte with a lemon twist followed by colonic irrigation. Roosy held the hose.

The only question we should be asking is "does he improve our on-field performance?" If the answer is yes then we should go after him.

For those who think he has too many deficiencies, how does he match up to Grimes? Terlich? Matt Jones? If we could get him and Malceski as our half backs for next year I think it improves our side and shores up our defence. Then we can focus on the midfield.

Personally I would prefer we could pass on this, but the reality of where our list is at and the amount of non AFL standard players we have means we can't afford to pass on proven players, even ones who carry far to much baggage for my liking.

It will all be in how much it will cost us, we need to get him for as little as possible, as he is only ever going to be a stop gap measure, while our young players get some decent development time.

Personally I'm all for bringing in characters with slightly left of centre personalities.

Surely you remember Jacko, Jakovich, Pyke, Schwartz etc..

We never complained then.

The group we have are too sanitised they are too predictable.

  • GAMEDAY: Brisbane

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are back on the road with a massive challenge ahead — facing the reigning premiers, the Brisbane Lions, at their Gabba fortress. The Lions are licking their wounds after a shock draw in Tasmania last week, while Melbourne’s season hangs in the balance. Can the Dees defy the odds and pull off a miracle to keep their razor thin finals hopes alive?

  • NON-MFC: Round 10

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

  • PREGAME: Brisbane

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?
