I don't mind Dawes - when he is up and going he is a very valuable player. But his first outing for the season at Casey he was way off. I think another 6-8 weeks in the twos to get back to his best, just like Trenners. 

Talking of Jack, did anyone else notice that he said Roos has asked him to tell him when he is ready to return to the ones, and he quickly added he thinks it is some weeks off. Quality bloke Trenners, and from what I have seen of his form and fitness I would agree. Takes some maturity and self perception for him though to say it about himself. 

We have some really quality people at our club now - including Trenners and Dawsy.

Pedersen's contributions now seem regularly to be in the ballpark of what Dawes contributed in the 2010 grand final win (mark that as you will, but it wasn't bad!), while the latter seems to have retreated quite a bit from that, at least in his pure football contribution.

And re DD's post, Nev Jetta also says hi, as do a fair number of former rookies in that period. But Cam's resurrection after the labelling out of that ducking incident is certainly heartwarming.

Firstly - a big disclaimer - the below only applies to a FIT Dawes - which we haven't seen

A more attacking quick game plan would suit Dawes. Dawes is not a good contested but is a good hit up option and does get on his bike and keep leading and was a key to Collingwood's success in their premiership year. He absolutely led to the flanks under Neeld and also when he has played under Roos because simply that is the game plan we were following - he runs patterns that he is told to run. The switch to being more corridor-centric is a recent phenomena this year.

I am not sure he can't play second ruck or he doesn't want to. He would probably be a slight downgrade on Pedersen in the ruck ( who is no world beater in the ruck either). 

As to not applying forward pressure - I am happy to acknowledge that Dawes weakness is he drops too many marks but his strength is his forward pressure - his contesting, his tackling, his blocking, his second efforts.  

Irrespective - unless Dawes can get fit and recapture 2010 form he, like Pedersen and Frost (playing up forward) are all just keeping the seat warm until either the Weed or Hulett hopefully step up.

What about Shane Woewodin 1999 to 2000?  Kicks up by 55% handball up 80% goals up 100% tackles up over 300%, that Shane Charters knew a thing or two about supplements. Then in 2001 he was back to worse than 1999, I wonder why? No Mr Charters I presume.

As an aside - I was half listening to whosiwatsis Luff and David King  and that Luff bloke said our improvement in attacking/scoring from last year to this year is the biggest improvement of all time ( not sure if he said all time or since detailed stats were kept - but either way, it is pretty impressive.)

Come on G. Keep up. Jamar did it in one season. Was just some guy, wouldn't have gotten a game on any other list. Then in 2010, boom, All Australian. That's a short time. There's some facts you seem to ignore too. And Pedo is nowhere near All Australian.

Like I say, not a slight on Pedo. I love the guy and have always thought he had way more talent than a huge amount of guys in his draft year. Just saying there's guys out there, like Jamar, who had almighty leaps noone saw coming that make Pedo's look tiny. No need to get huffy. Just keeping you honest.

I have to agree with you, however even if he never makes All Australian (he won't), if Pedersen can maintain his form over the course of a few seasons, I will personally regard it as more impressive than Jamar's improvement. I'd pick sustainable strong form over a "one and done" season any day of the week.

Hes come a long way since hearing footsteps vs Port in his first game for us, Round 1 2013..

Throws himself at everything these days and hasnt taken a  backward step since that day.

 

He's an honest player who gives his all. You simply have to respect that.

I guess I initially thought of him as a soft player for a while after that incident vs Port in his first game for us. Happy to be wrong on that count. No Melbourne player has run back with the flight more than Pedersen in the last 2 years or so for us barring Crossy who was absolutely fearless. Pedersen is serviceable, tough and has a good mark/decent kick. Well ahead of Frost for me as although he may not have much improvement left in him, he has a skill set that is suited to being a marking option, either in defence or up forward. Good on him for making something of his career.

Pedersen is your typical Roos soldier, not the most skilled player in the world, but will play his assigned role to the best of his ability each time he gets the chance, and Roos will continue to give him a game until he doesn't play the role consistently or a better option appears, but that better option will have to earn it

I disagree. Pedersen's overall skills in marking, kicking and handballing is probably the best at the club amongst the key position players. His issue has been his workrate and commitment to playing a team game. 

But I agree that the "soft" tag over one incident has been exaggerated.

Just a slight disagreement on skills, I think all AFL listed players should be able to kick, handball and mark to a decent standard, I am more along skilled between the ears, able to set up play etc, but that is not a knock on him, he does the role assigned to him

Yeah fair enough. I think in the years between now and when weed comes in he's going to be important. Just that consistency though. He has to offer a  contest even when he's not "on". Like hogan has been.

Oooh. Yeah. I will say though that I was always on him from his first game. Was just wanting to see him fit. I won't say I saw quite the level of dominance in him he has now, but always thought it was just a little bit of luck body wise and he was a certainty. So I sort of saw him coming a bit. Unlike Jamar who was the only player I ever said would never ever make it. Lol
