Foundation Heroes

Just one other thing the players are a bit jack of the media always finding an excuse for the other side for losing and not recognising the fact that we've played well.

Yeah, I noticed that the last few days. Nothing about Melbourne playing well, it was all "what's gone wrong at Tigerland?" How about we played well, had a good gameplan to shut down their halfback run and put huge pressure on their every disposal? Is that too much to ask?

Further to Robbies insights:

the best part of the night for me was the video contrasting the experiences of playing football in their day with Hassa Mann, Robbie Flower, Todd Viney, Rod Grinter and Jack Grimes.

Before the match we were told stories of pasta, steak etc, while Hassa told of being recommended a mixture of 4 raw eggs and worstershire sauce....which he promptly vomited! JG's speciality is a smoothie with 12 bananas!

The stories of cigarettes being smuggled out to players at 3/4 time and trainers running out with a hip flask of whiskey isn't something that happens today either....

Best part was the enthusiasm of everyone, especially the players who are just so upbeat now that they can see and experience what Roos is drumming into them about how to play and how to win. And the Foundation Heroes put in yet again....$600,000+ on the night. One supporter alone pledged $60K!!

With another 32 Heroes signed since last year, the group gets even bigger. This year PJ and PR signed up as well!

A fantastic night and good signs that this Club is on the right track, and has a most generous group of supporters that enables us to achieve things otherwise that would not be possible....

As a kid in the late 50's/early 60's i would often jump the fence at quarter and three quarter time and attend the team huddle . Security was non existent at most old suburban away games . Cigarettes were openly handed out to several players by trainers . Big Bob Johnson was a particularly enthusiastic recipient .

You don't even have to go that far back. I can recall Crackers puffing away at the breaks and I think he was joined by Tiger Crosswell on occasion.

Peter Moore was known to have a puff during the breaks.

It will take time to eradicate the last 7 years.

Be happy that it is happening

I'm Sure you are trying as hard as I am.

But I am willing to experiment with new things until we find a cure.

Do we actually budget to make money each year through FH or is it treated as a bonus?

I think they would expect to get some shackles from the event but I would imagine they wouldn't know at the start of the year how much.

Just one other thing the players love the big crowds and it helps if there are plenty of Dees there. Howey was telling me that in his second game he played in the QB game and some of the other guys told him to treat it like any other game and nothing was different, then he got out on the ground. He said his heart nearly exploded through his chest and he just couldn't believe the noise, I'm sure he's used to it now.

thought we were trying to shake of the 'shackles' there Robbie !! ^_^

Tiger and Crackers and Jacko in the same team --- now that is something that definitely wouldn't happen today!

I can also remember the `second siren', which used to sound once the players had all left the arena, and was the signal for the crowd to go onto the ground. This usually started a sprint for the centre, followed by hundreds of footies being kicked all over the ground. This was a weekly tradition until 10 or 15 years ago, and unfortunately now is a once-a-year treat at best ...

Maybe they would prefer shekels instead. Auto correct.

I love the fact that when we beat teams they are in 'crisis'. Carlton, Adelaide, Richmond. Fantastic. Happy for other teams to take heat while we go about our business of improving.

Wait till we knock of Port. It won't be "the Dees have genuinely improved" but more likely "Port didn't turn up to play after being up for so many weeks and the pressure of being on top of the ladder. I;ll be super happy if that happens as well!

Jack Riewoldt running away from journalists and scaling a fence at 9thmond sation to catch a train is glorious.

GO DEMONS. Let's scare the shite out of a few more. They have all feasted on us since 2006.

Still in existence at Simonds Stadium (Kardinia Park).

Doesn't sound like he touched on with his Myki card.. If you or I tried the same you'd be assaulted - and then fined - by the those hired goons posing as ticket inspectors and then quite possibly handed over to the cops.

Too true Grape....It is all who you know now....

Nice pick up. Never been there, and probably never will, but just in case ...

Robbie did hear any little talk on who we might chase at the end of the year? Would love to know if we are going to do another Tyson trade scenario.

No nothing like that, it was all about raising money and talking about the way they are going about transforming the club. They want to populate the place with people that have been involved with winning particularly winning flags.

It was interesting to hear Josh Mahoney talk about his years at Port where they expect nothing but success, they just naturally assume they will finish top 4 every year and nothing else is acceptable. We have to become a club that has the same aspirations and demand success.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
