Go and get a demon and market it to those that you want to - I am not advocating a change of name - I am saying that there is no need to get rid of the Emblem if you want to target people with the colours, or the city, or the Demon, or the city of Casey.

And I would be stating the bloody obvious if I said that supporters are happier with periphery issues like this one when we are winning.

I hope I don't sound too temperamental...

You're not quite getting it.

You need to understand that you don't speak for everyone. That there are some supporters for whom winning, or not winning, would have ZERO bearing on their interest in matters such as this. Who have an appreciation for the importance of brand to the health of a club.

The "nothing to see here" attitude every time matters such as these are raised is tiresome, and not helpful.

I'm all for having a more prominent and recognizable demon represented somewhere within our club, whether it be through merchandising or a logo. However I personally wouldn't like to see it on our away jumper. Cartoonish designs such as the hawks, crows, lions and eagles jumpers just look tacky. And who could forgot the hideous/constipated demon face accompanied on a red or white background we had a few years ago. More than happy to see a change in our away jumper design though, however I think that discussion has been done to death elsewhere.

To me the name Melbourne, the colours and the MCG are the important things that identify our club.

If we focus on something like the Demon then we have no real base or something that locks us into Melbourne. A logo, cartoon character or whatever it is can be moved to any location. The Hobart Demons for example, the name Melbourne can't.

It is imperative that the club retain the MFC identity.

I'm not saying FOCUS on Demon, but there should be a demon SOMEWHERE on the logo of the "Melbourne Demons"...

How am I 'speaking for everyone'?

And why don't you just stick to the arguments rather than worrying about my 'attitude.' If you are referring to my zeal on the white clash jumper I am hardly Sgt. Barbrady - I have my arguments that I put forward - I don't try to get people to 'move along.' That would be pointless on an internet forum - people can worry about what they want to worry about.

I know I can be tiresome, but I try to be helpful. I guess it depends on your definition of helpful...

No, I get that but I think we stand above all other Melbourne based teams. We are Melbourne, they're not so their mascot is important to give them more of an identity than a suburb.

We need to brand the MFC...the mascot is secondary to my way of thinking and can be used for apparel etc. Not saying I'm right 'stuie', it's just the way I see it.

That's a good point.

Highlighting an aspect of the club that is important to fans, may not be the best option to co-opt others to become fans.

I really would love to see a full court press in Casey but we can't even get the Scorpions to change their moniker...

Not going to dwell on it, but when you make statements like "supporters are happier with periphery issues like this one when we are winning", it has a distinct air of speaking for the masses, which you are not. You are one of the best posters here imo, but you are one guy, with one opinion.

Re rjay's point on what identifies the club, I'm with stu in that there is no need for the demon to be the focus, but bypassing it altogether is a wasted opportunity of something that goes hand in hand with a full contact sport. "Play like demons, not flowers".

would be a bit (more) crowded on our emblem if you added a demon stuie

Isn't the Demon represented on the emblem by the trident (why else is it there)? Having said that, I'm ambivalent about the emblem and couldn't care less if it stayed as it is or was changed...which I guess means it hasn't really grabbed me the way perhaps it should.

I find adding ''IMO" a tad redundant...

I get the desire to highlight the Demon, but I understand the multifaceted way we have to be appealing if we are to turn our lot around.

Is the Demon a part of that? Of course it is, but we also have to stress our name - Melbourne, our heritage - grand and founding, and the emblem establishes that in a quiet way. I don't want to keep talking about our history - the emblem nods to it and now we can move on and worry about the future.

That is why I like the 'busy' and 'try hard' emblem.

It establishes who we were so we don't have to keep celebrating the past as if we are eulogising it.

There is a future!

new logo sucks. change it.

The southern cross represents bogan Australia now sadly.

I find it hilarious the southern cross has become some white pride Aussie icon. Do these idiots realise it is identifiable with the entire Southern Hemisphere? Pretty sure Brazil's flag also sports the southern cross it is not uniquely Australian.

Get where you're coming from rjay, and agree with what you're saying there. I just think the "demons" part of our identity really gives us some kind of balls and spirit as far as image goes, something we've lacked for a few years now and something we all love about footy.

Yeah. But it could also be Aquaman or some kind of Nordic gardener...

Come on guys, we all know there's only one worthy alternative logo....

Funny you should say that, I made this a while back, stealing that demon head, and the club actually showed some interest in it...

At the time i suggested you follow through with it Stuie if you recall. I prefer your version. And i prefer either to the current one which is just too busy with nothing that really makes it stand out or anything that's distinguishable or punchy.

The club actually spoke to me about it but the problem was, even though the rest was my work, we couldn't find who owned the copyright for that demon head so it's stuck in limbo a bit...

As an emblem its great. As a logo it's not so great.

We can have a new logo and keep the emblem too.

I was surprised when Scwabb stuck it on the jumper. It was never going to work condensing it down.

Edit : love the [censored] outta that demon picture

Well I think the logo is fantastic. The pitch fork incorporates the demon, so I just don't see the logic that the demon isn't at least represented. Also, I hate to tell some of you, but one of our key differentiation points is that we are Melbourne, the name of the city, and we are the first. I reckon the Bombers and Hawks logos look ridiculous.

Being Melbourne and being the first is great and plays to the rusted on supporters but I doubt it will help expand our market share and grow our brand which is what a logo/emblem in this situation is about. I see no problem keeping the current emblem (maybe watered down a bit removing the flame, southern cross, script etc) for corporate use and creating a new logo with the Demon mascot for branding.

Look, for a marketing guy, I'm a good lawyer!! I have no idea about marketing, but I just don't get that a logo is likely to make one iota of difference to our brand. I would have thought marketable players, winning, presence in growth corridors and at schools and incentivising new members is the main game, not having an emblem and a logo.

If it actually would help attract more members if we had a simple demon logo or whatever, then I say go for it!

I like the emblem. It should be on our stationary letter head, and on official type stuff. We are the mfc.

I like having a demon around as it is our nickname. The Demon shouldn't be in our emblem but it can be in other non formal logos.

The demon shouldn't be on our jumper, but I don't think the emblem should be either.

The demon can be the focus of the kids membership etc. no worries.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
