The number of talls available at the pointy end is interesting. I hope whoever we take can stand up during the pre season :)

Spot on WJ.

I am depressed that already this thread is giving me more joy than any other and the first game has not even been played.

I personally hope we engage in serious trades for mature players this year again. We have proven over the last 10 years that we waste early picks by either poor selection, bad culture non existing development or by necessity playing them too early and ruining their potential. There is always the next big thing at the MFC a new messiah each and every year.

If Frawley leaves and we have a bad year we could potentially be looking at 3 first round picks. If we come last picks 1 2 and 3 could be ours.

If this happens we might as well fold because not even roosy can save us

Surely you are joking? We should have had a PP last year on the basis of our two wins yet the AFL succombed to pressure from the other Clubs and denied us our due. Why would this year be different? We should have Tom Boyd on our list this year, making our forward line much stronger for the next decade combined with Hogan and Fitzy.

Thank god you left out the two crocks, yes we need some support for Hogan and Fitzy.

Hugh Goddard and if Chip leaves Sam Durdin with the compo

Posted

Yeah that will be interesting, if that's the case it becomes vital that we replace Chip with a quality free agent if he chooses to leave

afl.com.au article today saying compo picks are staying. So at least if he does go we'll get a very good compo pick. Unless we pick up a free agent but not sure any available would suit us. Mundy is a bit old for our purposes.

I don't think there is one this year, Bryce Gibbs is probably not the right type of player, i reckon we collect the compo pick which will probably be pick 4 or 5 and offer both our top picks up for trade, another couple of deals like the Tyson to GWS one will have us looking better and with the Key position targets at the top end the high picks will be more appealing to sides

They will be very appealing to us, if we're in that position this year we take them. If we lose Frawley and I'm not convinced we will it will mean apart from Hogan we have no top class KPP's

Continuing the series of pen pictures of prospective 2014 draftees from the AFL PROSPECTUS. The first of these is apparently a future superstar -

HUGH GODDARD Geelong Key Forward 194cm Resembles: Justin Leppitsch

Cousin of Bomber Brendon, Hugh is a key position player comfortable playing either forward or back. He burst onto our radar at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships with 13 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six marks and three goals per game, winning Vic Country's MVP award, and followed it up with 11 disposals, seven contested possessions and five marks across four NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches in 2013. In 2013 he also played eight TAC Cup matches for Geelong, averaging 12 disposals, five marks and two goals per game.

FREAKO: An exceptional leader on and off the field who will be a household name in years to come.

LIAM GRIFFITHS NSW/ACT Rams Midfielder 182cm Resembles: Robert Harvey

Griffiths is a medium midfielder who has an elite running capacity, with his excellent leg speed allowing him to break the lines and run-and-carry. We first saw Griffiths play at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he racked up 21 disposals, a disposal efficiency of 81%, four clearances, eight inside 50s and one goal against Northern Territory. He rounded out the Championships with averages of 15 disposals, five inside 50s and two clearances. He missed the majority of 2013 with a dislocated shoulder, however, finished the season with a few NEAFL matches for Ainslie.

FREAKO: An elite runner with great endurance, forward to seeing more of him in 2014.

JACK HAYES Key Fwd 190cm Eagles Resembles: Jarrad Waite

Hayes' strengths are his contested marking and clean ball handling as a key forward. Despite an impressive 19 disposals, five marks and two goals in a state trial match, he missed the final cut for South Australia's 2013 NAB AFL Under-18 Championship squad. At SANFL level in 2013, he played 11 matches for the Eagles Under-18s, averaging 19 disposals, seven marks and eight hitouts per game. His best performance was in Round 23 against West Adelaide where he racked up 34 disposals, 17 marks and seven inside 50s playing at centre half-forward.

FREAKO: Has hands like buckets but needs to work on his kicking. One to watch in 2014.

ISAAC HEENEY NSW/ACT Rams Midfielder 184cm Resembles: Steele Sidebottom

A medium midfielder with elite endurance and ball- winning ability, Heeney was the standout for NSW/ ACT at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, averaging 169 Champion Data ranking points, 28 disposals, 14 contested possessions, five marks, six tackles and four clearances to be voted as his state's MVP. He played four matches at the 2013 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 17 disposals, five marks and three inside 50s per game. His final match for 2013 was for Sydney Swans at NEAFL level, where he finished with 20 disposals, three clearances and two goals.

FREAKO: A natural inside midfielder with a great attitude. Should go the next step in 2014.

TOM LAMB Dandenong Mid Fwd 190cm Resembles: Jared Brennan

Lamb is a fiercely competitive wing/half-forward who competes well at ground level and can also impact the scoreboard. At the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he played all three matches averaging 14 disposals, seven contested possessions and two goals, while in 2013 at TAC Cup level despite injury interruptions, played 12 matches, averaging 19 disposals, eight contested possessions and four marks. These performances saw him tally the equal most Morrish Medal votes for Dandenong.

FREAKO: A rough diamond who has the potential to be anything. An exciting prospect.

JAKE LEVER Calder Gen Def 188cm Resembles: Garrlck Ibbotson

Brother of delisted Saint Jay, Jake is a ferociously competitive medium defender who played all three NAB AFL Under-16 Championship matches for Victoria Metro in 2012 and in 2013 played four NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches. At Under-18 level, he averaged 17 disposals, four marks and three rebound 50s. At TAC Cup level for Calder he excelled, playing 16 matches and averaging 18 disposals, six marks and five rebounds from defence. He ranked in the top-10 of the TAC Cup for spoils and intercept possessions and his 49 intercept marks was ranked No. 1 in the competition.

FREAKO: Impressive wrap sheet so far and should go further than his brother.

Just repeating my post from a few days ago. With the news on Mitch we will need to target one of the key position players in this years draft. McCartin or maybe Goddard for me.

or go buy one

Patton or Boyd in 2015 / 2016 please.

Even if Clark does retire mid-year I would imagine his salary will still be on our books until then?

If Frawley (and Dunn) go at the end of 2014, we should have plenty of the mandatory 100% cap to throw around.

A couple of good trade seasons can be the difference between bottom 4 and top 8. We need only look at the brilliant recruitment at Port and emulate their success. The pickups they got over two off seasons have put them where they are now. Getting Polec was icing on the cake.

Mate, you abused me last year when I raised Dunstan's name; now look at him.

Don't be so dismissive of people's views. You don't have any more standing than the next guy.

Thats ok. I called for Wines and Freeman/ Dunstan/Sheed over Salem. Mature bodies with grunt. No Grgic, Cook, Gysberts or Morton types. We have no gym and IMO must draft players who are ready to go.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
