A great article on MFC website interviewing Col Garland. The more I hear from him the more I am impressed. I am seriously thinking he should be considered as captain. He isn't just playing for the Dees he loves the club and wants the club to succeed more than personal success. He has worked through his low confidence and lack of vocal input, and now when he is interviewed I love what he has to say.

Consider him for captain? Thoughts?

Not yet.

Not doubting his leadership ability, but think at this stage he is best suited in the leadership group, and maybe earn the role of deputy vice captain (if they still have such a title?!).

10 minutes ago I would have scoffed at the suggestion. I've always thought Garland was a bit of an introvert. A guy that's too left of centre to be a true leader.

But after watching his most recent interview, it does't seem like such a crazy idea. There's something about this guy I can't quite put my finger on. He may not be particularly eloquent or captivating, but there's a steely resolve behind his words. He genuinely wants to be the driving force that transform the culture and on-field success of the club.

Indeed now may not be the right time to make the appointment, but I wouldn't be surprised to see his name bandied around for the captaincy over the next few years.

Have thought all along that he is/should be well and truly within the running for the captaincy. Would not be at all opposed to the idea, great speaker, great player

It'll be a true sign that this club has turned a corner when one of our players give articulate and thoughtful interviews and nobody says 'he should be captain', but just says 'good to have another responsible presence at the club'.

I'm a big fan of Garland the footballer and Garland the human being (from what snippets we get), but I don't think he'd even want to be captain. Leadership group for sure, but he doesn't seem the type to want a life of constant attention.

To me the truly great leaders are the ones who go about their job and lead the others by the example they set both on and off the field.

Tom Harley was a great example never sought attention, wasn't flamboyant but was respected by all the players, coaches, staff and supporters.

Col is a very good candidate for captain. When he speaks people listen. he doesn't speak in clichés like a lot of others.

He is a great thinker and a considered speaker.

Yep would be a consideration I would think.

Harley led the change in culture and success at Geelong. Not the most fashionable captain but his legacy is still present. I have long thought Colin to be our Harley.

I don't think he would be as good as Nathan jones. Jonesy is also all for the club and he is pretty much our best player

I agree with that quote but there are some better options to choose from

I would definitely consider him for captain.. He is to Melbourne what Scarlett was at the cats. Still has abit more to do, to be at the same level but could definitely general from the back line. I would rather our captain be in the midfield atm. Garland has had a big enough work load in the last two years.. Jones for captain and Garland vice!

Was watching the bulldogs replay last night and was loving the part where he took a mark and and then bumped Griffen out of the way!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. Firstly the bad news - McVee went down late, which does look like a bad hammy - towards the end of match sim, as he kicked the ball. Had to

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

    TRAINING: Wednesday 5th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
