Barrett peddling his usual crap about the Demons

Featured Replies

I heard Barrett say yesterday that north will be Geelong of 2007 next year and they are the only team he can see challenging freo, I did the old face palm and turned off the radio

He has limitations (speed and work ethic) which limit his impact on games on a regular basis.

Sylvia has a number of limitations, but speed isn't one of them.

You're confusing Barrett with Craig Hutchinson.

...and Hutchy probably knows less about the game than Barrett. A couple of years back he had us as a top 4 powerhouse, well we can dream.

Regardless of who said it, North will be good next year but let's not get ahead of ourselves...

North will always be floating around eighth to sixth.

Vince is from Adelaide. Non Victorian players get ranked harder than Melbourne based players. Vince has nothing to prove unlike Colin. Fact most journalists forget

There are many different types of journalist in the world. Some report the facts as they see them and leave it up to the reader to interpret what's going on. Others write opinion pieces and it's clear most of the time where they stand on various issues. Others still will mix opinion with their reporting (eg the Caro type) which is something I dislike because their agenda takes over their reporting and often leads to misrepresentation about what's happening. Worse still are the journos who do often produce agenda based articles either to push their own barrows or at the behest of their mates. That's slimy reporting IMO.

I think the Denham's and the Barrett's are in the last category. They're very good at it though because they've caused a lot of discussion around here about their style and their reporting.

Your comment about journalists with agendas certainly resonates.

From time to time, every club will deliberately leak news to "favoured" journalists to get certain information out in the public domain. I once thought Denham occupied such a position with Melbourne as he always used to get scoops from the club. However, when the Stynes/McLardy /Schwab administration came into power he seemed to do a 360 degree turn and became hostile to the club. That hostility seems to have diminished somewhat since the changes to the club's administration earlier in the year.

I could be wrong but if his motivation was either a dislike of the people involved at the club or loyalty to mates then it doesn't say much for his credibility.

Forget the journos.

No news is good news.

'Jack', he made comments about lies coming from the club. My guess is he was being fed rubbish under the new mob and he didn't like it. He certainly wasn't a CS fan, not on his own there.

I distinctly remember that he seemed to almost have a soft spot.

Found an old video of a roos interview on the couch. Its interesting to hear what he says about the players he brought to sydney from about 2:35,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6IMUOe-fqY

He speaks about targeting players for specific roles and to be in the best 22.

He also says "we never have a scattergun approach".

great get

yep..at about 3.31... "we never have a scattergun approach" Loved it. Someone nail this to Barretts forehead !!

Going to be interesting to see the Roos' Dees take the field :)

Forget the journos.

No news is good news.

I second that idea. We've dominated the newspapers for the last 2 years with negativity, only being pushed out by the Bombers "whatever it takes" program. I'm quite happy for us to fly under the radar for a while.

As for Barretts opinion, that's all it is. An opinion by someone who I don't respect. At the end of the day most of us are pleased with what we've done, and we've got Roos leading the way for the next 2-3 years. Who cares what some [censored] "journalist" think.

there are 18 teams and only 1 winner

if you take a pessimistic view as a journalist you have odds of 17:1 of being roughly correct

its the easy option, generates a bit of a talking point and controversy but really tells you very little as a reader

guess where DB fits

My guess is that it was in accordance with his agenda to claim that he was being fed lies. Whether or not you're a CS fan, there was a substantial body of both correct and incorrect information put out about him and the board and those employed by it (including the coaches) during and since that administration, a great deal of which was never substantiated. Some of this will come out in the fullness of time while much has become the substance of urban mythology which I suspect never will see the light of day but will continue to be the subject of much speculation.

Whilst it would be best for the club to move on, its history must be written at some time and this period will always be controversial and potentially explosive. We therefore need it to be written by people who are completely impartial.

Not sure where we will find that person WJ

Martin Flanagan. Has written extensively about the Demons, but is not a supporter, although he clearly has a great respect and affection for the club. Having spoken to him about the Dees, he also can see the weaknesses. I haven't seen any writings from him on the Dees since Roos took over. It would be interesting to hear what he thinks of the new regime and how it is going.

I believe Flanagan was invited to spend a season with the Dee's getting into the inner sanctum and we gave him very good accesses to the club.

He was indeed and enjoyed it very much I understand. He really likes the Dees, but even then could see the weaknesses.

The point of my last post was in response to WJ's question about finding a name of someone impartial to write the history of the MFC during the Cameron Schwab/Bailey/Neeld eras. Flanagan would be perfect.

I would say that if he did, he may become persona non grata with many at the MFC and indeed it may prevent him from doing similar stories at other clubs in the future. With a lot of journalism, connections and access are key. If Martin were to turn around and pot some of the jokers who used to work at our club and call them out by name (though there is a possibility he wouldn't and he hasn't in the past) and then were to approach another club for a story, they would be wary. Their thinking would be 'if he did that to Melbourne, why wouldn't he do it to us?'

Holy Moses. I was driving this morning listening to SEN and I heard Denham say that he no longer regarded us as the Melbourne Bears.

The man's been possessed!

He had a go about Kelly again, and every time I text and ask him how many games he's seen Kelly play (none) I never get an answer.

Damning with faint praise is an English idiom for words that effectively condemn by seeming to offer praise which is too moderate or marginal to be considered praise at all.[1] In other words, this phrase identifies the act of expressing a compliment so feeble that it amounts to no compliment at all, or even implies a kind of condemnation.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
