STUART Dew remains in the frame for Melbourne's senior assistant coaching position even though he is tied to the Sydney Swans until the end of 2014.

Would you be happy to wait for Dew or should we get someone who is available straight away?

If we do have to wait for Dew an extra 12 months would that then translate as Roos staying on as coach for a third year? Either way I would be happy.

Why rush?

Means Roos will stay at least year 3.

I suspect the article is calling the Swans bluff by signalling that he is leaving in a year and we can wait.

By saying there will be no assistant appointed this year because we are waiting for the candidate we want to become available it will do Colless head in.

Dews position at the Swans will be untenable, he would just be gathering more inside information for a year at the swans, and getting close to those who will want to leave because Buddy has all the money.

The swans are about to be out flanked here i suspect.

My view is we have rushed into things for six years now and look where we are.

We have a new team from the Chairman down. I don't have the knowledge to know

If the new team thinks he is the best then wait.

makes sense ...otherwise wed have surely named the heir apparent by now.

Im not expecting miracles from day 1..( I'll given a few weeks grace here...lol ) We are on a rebuild on many fronts and this will take time. if Dew's the man then we wait.

There's nothing stopping Dew signing with us now for the coaching role from 2015 onwards.

Would John Longmire like Dew gathering intel in 2014,then joining us?

Great thinking by the dees we have 12 months min to get the right man then 2 years one would think to make sure he is the right choice. Im strongly in the stuey dew corner (although I originally liked neeld also (((((!) He is a premiership player and a premiership premiership assistant been in the business a while and and another couple of years under the master roos would be pretty handy. Surely we are well on the way to some sustained success with tthenew look look footy department?

If the plan was to have Dew come in this year as a senior assistant as part of the succession plan, then what happens now if we are to wait for him to come next year? I assume we still have a position that needs filling this year, or am I calling that wrong? If we do need to fill a position this year, who would come on board knowing that they will probably be gone again in 12 months time?

A few of you are making the assumption that Roos will be a good coach for us and the extra year will be good. Doesn't always work out that a coach being good at 1 club will mean they are good at another club.

ie. Dennis Pagan, John Northey, Robert Walls to name a few.

A Roos gambit here, I can hear the interview now:

"We are looking for the best candidate and the boys will know who will be coaching them going forward even if that person is not yet available. We will keep our door open to all expressions of interest..... No I have not spoken to Richard . I am still disappointed but I am sure we will speak sometimme in the future. The Buddy thing does surprise me a little and no doubt we will see how his body holds up for 10 years. I cant see us doing a deal like that here at the Dees where we will be trying to build our own culture. I am sure the swans have a plan but its hard to work out what its going to look like. "

I loved Dew as a player from the moment I saw his first kick in AFL.

This is the sort of "A Grade" play our club has been sadly missing for a long time. This is playing the Swans at their own game. We can't lose from this. There is a high likelihood that this will flush Dew out in the coming weeks. With this comment, all it takes is for Dew to tell the Swans he is intending to leave for the Dees at the end of his contract and he will be released. I suspect he will be in Red and Blue before pre-season training starts.

Mate hate to break it to you, but even if Roos disappoints he will still be 5 fold better than Neeld and significantly better than Bailey. Neeld was the worst possible appointment. He was the wrong man, at the wrong time who did not possess the required skill set and was hopelessly out of his depth at a basket case of a club. Its a big difference being a assistant coach at a super club under the best coach in the game to being head coach at a 2nd tier club with massive internal problems. He could not coach, he could not develop, he could not install confidence and self belief and he had no idea how to deal with the internal politics and issues.

At the very least Roos has experience, is a master motivator and a legendary player developer. We have our man.

Would definitely like most of our coaching group assembled by next year but if he is the best fit for the role - then we wait.

Hopefully Sydney folds and says "run along Dew". I have never really hated a club before but Sydney is becoming the front runner.

I would like the successor to have as long as possible under Roos and involvement with the players so he can create bonds and know the gameplan etc.

Even if Neeld did have a decent gameplan - he had divided the playing group and they were never going to regroup under him.

We need a united playing group more than any other team.

Btw, did anyone see the video recently (last month or so) of stewie dew at swans training, kicking a goal from the players race at the SCG?

He still has it.

The curl on that kick was phenomenal.

I doubt that Colless will want Dew sitting inside the Sydney inner sanctum for the whole of 2014 in the knowledge that he is committed to Melbourne from 2015 and beyond, any more than we intend to have Craig with us next year when he is not part of Roos longterm plans. I understand that we intend to pay out the last year of Craig's contract and i am sure that Colless will not want to do the same with Dew as he may need every cent for Buddy. Personally i think Colless is posturing and if roos wants dew then he will get him on board in 2014.

I guess he would be 37 by the time he is successor or do you think we are mainly just looking at him becoming a line coach?

I guess we can always have two or three possible successors and just pick the best one when the time comes (Burns/Simpson/Dew).

"Dew has been an assistant coach with the Sydney Swans the past two seasons, looking after the defence in 2011 and is in charge of stoppages this season.

Dew retired at the end of the 2009 season after being drafted to Port Adelaide in the 1996 National Draft. He played a total of 206 AFL games, 180 for Port Adelaide before spending his final two seasons at Hawthorn. He won a premiership with Port Adelaide in 2004 and another with Hawthorn in 2008.

Following the departure of Brett Allison to North Melbourne, Dew joined the Swans late in 2009 as a development coach.

I love it! Finally doing what ever it takes to get the best.

If that means waiting a year so be it, Swans can pay and train our coach for a year and he can tap up some players to come with him.
