Is there anybody currently at the club more responsible for the current state of the playing group?

He's been in charge of List Management since 2009 and despite all the high draft picks, never in my lifetime has this team looked as bad as it does right now.

As much flack as Prendergast gets on here it was Harrington sitting right by his side and was ultimately the guy Barry answered to.

I have a lot of faith in Jason Taylor and think we're in good hands with regards to recruiting but the "General Manager of List Management" continuing in said position doesn't appear to be in the club's best interests.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that he's a number cruncher whose chief responsibility is to manage the salary cap for now and in to the future. I'd be amazed if he had that much say in the actual comings bode goings in the list, and I highly doubt Barry reported to him. He and Baz would have been at the same level on the org chart.

Who gives out the lengths of the contracts Nasher?

Good question, don't know. He may have input, but it seems unlikely to me that an analyst would have the authority to get a team "stuck" with a player longer than the footy guys wanted him. I expect he gets told by the footy boffins what the parameters are like who they want to keep and for how long, then he negotiates with the player managers on their behalf. I'm just guessing now though.

I remember reading it an article and it makes sense for the 'National Recruiting Manager' to report to the 'General Manager of List Management' (there's been heaps of articles about Barry and Tim working together on the drafts). Couldn't find the actual article but found one that goes against your initial "number crunching" theory...

Does it?

Harrington is looking at the make-up of the list, including player contracts, though Prendergast will have the final call on who is drafted into the club.

Equals Harrington crunches the numbers, Prendergast picks the players. Given that part of Prendergast's (and Viney Snr's) role is conducting player trades, it's a no-brainer that they have to work closely with the guy responsible for player contracts.

You are either naïve or deliberately undermining the role of the GM of List Management. He oversees all to do with the list and plays a huge part in de-listings and acquisitions. all in accordance with the big plan for the future.

Hence he is a big part of the current problem.

Wanky job title notwithstanding, I would be amazed if TH had any more than a bit part in choosing who is on the list. That has to fall to the coach and the chief recruiter. It just has to.

I'm with Nasher - Harrington is just the bloke managing what people are getting paid - he doesn't have a say in who gets contracts.

So the question then is, who is responsible for the overall direction of the list?

Five years ago the decision was made to rebuild through the draft and get games into the kids - where does that decision come from?

And last year the decision was made to abandon the kids and to use the media's loose term "Moneyball" it - who makes that call? Is that the Head of Footy? The Coach? The List Manager? Ultimately it's probably all three to some extent, but there has to be an overall person responsible for the Recruiting / List Management strategy the club takes doesn't there?

Derrick Hine, Steven Wells and Graham Wright are all list managers at their clubs.

And last year the decision was made to abandon the kids ....

Better not tell that to Barry, Stark, Viney, Toumpas, Kent ... not to mention I've-just-turned-18 Hogan.

We've taken as many kids as we always did, and then some.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan.
