I do rate Grundy, but I can't imagine any scenario that would see us taking him. We already have a lot of young talls that we rate highly, and midfielders need to be our priority at #4.

Grundy is rated a top-shelf top 3 talent by many scribes. If that's the case then nabbing him may pay dividends in two ways ....

1. Our ruck/forward line stocks suddenly go from reasonably potent to quite possibly 'best in competition'. If Neeld can mould our present midfield plus Viney and a top end pick next year into a formidable unit (huge ask I'll give you), then we've got it made in the shade.

2. If things don't work out we have an A-grade talent in Grundy to trade out for ready made gun midfielder.

This scenario really only works if our recruiters feel there is a significant gap between Grundy and the quality of midfielder available to us at pick 4. With Toumpas you'd think it wouldn't even be a consideration but Wines and O'Rourke? If they deem them to have a sufficient gap in talent to Grundy ... maybe.

I don't think you can draft a player with a view to trading him two years later.......You must draft for the player who you believe will be a 100 to 150 game player for yor club.....

I think the Dogs will take him, and if not them, Richmond.

Would be a big win for the Tiges, with him rotating through the midfield with Martin going forward they would be a powerful line up. No way he will get through to the Pies at pick 18.

I'm not against taking Grundy as rucks are very tradable.

Next year we'll workout who we want to keep out of our more mature rucks & can trade from then on.

Grundy should still require a Yr or 2 building up, even if some say he's ready now.

Gawn & Spencer could go either way & the Russian is at or past his age peak.

I'd be open to up to 5 choices I reckon inc' Toumpa, Wines, Grundy & Stringer.

It could be an interesting conversation on the Melbourne draft table if they rate Grundy say a clear 2nd pick but he is still available after the GWS trifecta. I would say Grundy fulfils Viney's 4 pillars - highly competitive, talent, physical attributes and could well be a solid citizen for all I know

No doubt they have already worked through this scenario, but do you give up (hypothetically) the 2nd best player in order to fill a pressing need?

Ps Just realised NoMoreMrNiceGuy posted a similar scenario previously

If the unlikely situation of both Wines and Toumpas are gone, i wouldn't mind bringing in Grundy. Not only can he play as a big forward as well, but aside from our needs in the middle, our ruck stocks aren't exactly all that flash.

Jamar is not getting any younger, plus has only had one good year (back in 2010), Gawn is no sure thing, Martin has been traded, Spencer i still don't rate all that highly, and Fitzpatrick well.............. There is Clark, but he is our KPF, plus i don't think the club is being totally honest with us, re:his foot injury.

Grundy would become our 2nd best ruckman, almost best ruckman, the moment he might get drafted by us. We'd then need to make it our mission to bring in nothing but quality midfielders for the next 2-3 years.

When you look at it like that, its a fair point. Spencer and Gawn have a lot more developing to do and have both had shocking runs with injury. Grundy is suddenly very appealing to take at pick 4

Unless our recruiters feel the midfielder available to us at pick 4 is a lock to develop into an A-grader, Grundy definitely comes into calculations.

Good points, DD. Jamar would make a good mentor to Grundy, given his experience. In three years time when Jamar is retiring, we could very well have the best ruckman in the league, and only 21 years old.

and re Stringer, - if he regains full fitness & can run hard & jump unhindered, he could be awesome. Key forward or mid, or big ruck rover like a Goodes.

If he is a little hampered by the leg going forward, he could still be a JWatson type. I'd be very happy with that scenario as well.

We have some small/medium mids but we don't have any monster mids.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
