Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I believe the highest form of compo is a pick straight after your 1st round pick...which is why hypothetically we could end up with picks 3,4,5...as long as the afl believe moloney is worth that much using their secret formula.

There's 2 different first round compensation bands. But a club can only receive a maximum of 1 pick per player and must use the picks in the upcoming draft. So that makes it a little harder for tanking I think as they can't bank the picks.

Free Agency - The Age

I thought the picks got used the following year , so if you loose a player in 2012 the picks have to be used in 2013 ??

Lol... No chance.

Mayyyyyybe if it was last year after his Bluey, but no way this year.

We'll probably get somewhere around 20-30, but only if we don't sign a free agent considered as good or better than Moloney.

No, they have to be used in the draft immediately following free agency. If the Pies lose Cloke, they'll most probably get the top compensation, which would equate to around pick 18 odd in this years draft.

Byrnes is, at the least, a good VFL standard small forward. But he's probably better than that - a good average player who could get a regular spot in half the teams in the league.

Not good enough? OK, he's not the Wiz in full flight. So what? At present, we don't even have Diamond Valley League standard small forwards.

I will not have you talking badly about the DVL.

So hypothetically if we lost Beamer and Rivers and got no one back as a free agent we could get pick 5. Wow that could lead to manipulation by clubs.

It doesn't tally up, if we lose two players, we would get 2 Picks.

I agree it is complicated and I said months ago that there were many things up in the air (a few on here gave me the 'these are professional clubs, they have thought of everything' line but I doubt it.

rpfc's System

I still say that a 'tally' system is the way to go but in this fashion:

(Thereare 5 bands of comp with a points system of 5 for the highest and 1 for the lowest)

Lose

Player at Band 2 - 4 points

Player at Band 3 - 3 points

Player at Band 3 - 3 points

Gain

Player at Band 5 - 1 point

Player at Band 3 - 3 points

Player at Band 4 - 2 points

This would equal a net loss of 4 points but with no net loss of players. If there are no net loss of players or a gain of players a team would get ONE pick to the value of their loss of points. The above example would be Band 2 comp and a pick at the end of the first round.

This way would give incentive for clubs to sign up FAs as it would INCREASE the value of any picks gained as the net loss of players decreases.

That was hard to follow but a good way of doing it IMO.

Do we know if it tallies up or not? Because If we end up with pick 5 that would be huge.

And I'd imagine the club might look to trade to pick up any desired free agents rather that through free agency so it does not impact our net loss and therefore compensation.

I do hope the club has a good understanding of how this all works so it can make the beat decisions. They might not know the formula but I hope the know the compensation based on verious senarios.

We just haven't got a journo willing to go and ask the AFL and 'get' how it will work, and I also think the AFL is making this up as they go...

The real question is "are any of our free agents worth the top compensation?" I think we've maybe got a few at the end of the first round compensation picks in Moloney & Rivers. But I'm doubtful as to whether we'd get top compo for them.

You're right RPFC, until we know how they formulate the compensation, we won't know.

Depends on if they rate it as importance to the team or overall quality of player.

They might no be individually but if it's based on nett gain/loss they might be worth it combined.

You would think if it's done this way you would get one pick based in your total loss rather than a pick per player because it's impacted by the players you gain.

If you lose a player to FA......and you gain one from FA....No compensation will be given....

Do you know that for a fact?

What if the saints lost Goddard but gained Bate? Surely it can't be based purely on numbers but there is a value component.

If you gain a FA that the AFL judges to be of the same quality as one you've lost you get no compensation.

I know it's the silly season, but some here need to realize that things work out evenly, we won't get favours.

Not enitrely true. It depends on the difference between how they are rated in compensation. If they are equally rated then they cancel each other out. If you lose a higher rated player and gain a lesser one, the compensation will be based on the difference, so you'll still get one pick.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer.
