Look what I got today

Hey all, i'm an American footy fan, and last year, I decided to support the Demons. Partially because I am a fan of Hamish and Andy, and heard Hamish was a Dees supporter, but more so, because of the rich history of the club, Jim Stynes, and a few players I really liked. I was so pumped to watch my first game as a Dees fan, I woke up at 3 AM to watch Melbourne get thumped by West Coast, haha not a very good start to me being a Demons fan.

So at the time I became a fan, I sent an email to the Demons, asking a question about something related to the club. Anyway, I never heard back from them, till earlier this month. I got an email back from a representative of the club, who thanked me for my support of the club, and said that to make up for a slow reply, they sent me this. Got here today, and I'm way excited. It made me love the club even more. I honestly didn't even expect to hear back from them, let alone have them offer to send me something. Sorry if this post was kind of stupid, I just wanted to share my excitement with someone, and i'm the only AFL fan I know in my state haha.

Welcome aboard AD.

Spent a year in America as an exchange student when I was a young fella. My PE teacher let me take our class for 3 weeks and teach Aussie Rules. The class loved it and we finished with a game that I umpired. I've always wondered if any of them kept following our great game.

It really was funny, that my first game as a fan was the drubbing to WC. But staying with the club through the bad times, will make the eventual good times all the better.

I think i've got an odd thing about picking favorite teams, that tend to not be overly successful. My favorite NFL team hasn't won an NFL championship (they did win one championship in a now defunct league though!) My favorite soccer team is Tottenham Hotspur who i've supported for 13 years now and haven't seen them win anything. My favorite baseball team hasn't won anything since the year after I was born...I'm accustomed to pain.

That would be the worst, Im a Chelsea man myself (before Abramovich) so at least I get some joy.

Welcome though and like others have said its going to be one hell of a ride

That's awesome, AD!

I don't know if you're interested or not, but there are many teams in the USAFL which you could join if you were looking to play some footy. International footy is growing rapidly and new teams are always being formed, so I'm sure there'll be one near you. Even if you're not interested in playing it's good to get out and watch some footy live every now again if you can :)

Welcome American Demon.

Welcome aboard! Good times ahead. I suggest finding a copy of the Melbourne-Adelaide game from last year to see what it will be like when the players 'click'.

Good to see they sent you a little present! Leigh Williams should be nicknamed Casper though.

This next premiership (we sometimes call it a flag) has been nearly 50 years in the making (1964).

Currently ,it doesn't look to be that close either so nobody could ever accuse you of jumping on a band-wagon.

Unless its the band wagon of pain.

welcome to the elite club of supporting both the mighty dees and the famous tottenham hotspur. there arent many of us and those of us who exist are depressed and yet always full of hope!

For years I had the same thing ... then New Orleans got Drew Brees and Manchester City got bought by a sheik. Things can change!

A man after my own heart! I also go for Tottenham and for the San Diego Chargers in the NFL who haven’t really won anything either! BUT my love for the Demons is 100x that of these teams, a love I hope you one day share.....welcome abroad!!!

That's fantastic AD, great to have you on board.

Which MLB team do you like by the way?

Welcome AD.

Try and keep away from MFCSS. And good luck finding out what that stands for!

Go Dees!

Jeeze, another hardluck supporter. Good choice, we haven't won jackshit since 1964 :)

Hopefully we can rectify that in the next few years for everyone on here's sake.

Edited: Still learning to type.

The Los Angeles Dodgers. There was an old song written about the Dodgers back in the day with the line "They may be bums, but they're my bums." That's how I feel about the current Demons team. They're not doing too good, but dammit I love em.

Yeah. I'd hate to sit through a decade like 1955-64. Strange person.

Well obviously I mistyped!!! :P

Welcome AD.

I have spent a lot of time in NE US for work and have a similar passion for the Red Sox. Now we all know about the curse of the Bambino - and MFC have our own version of that. Since Norm Smith was sacked in 65, we haven't been very close to a flag. Our golden child Barrassi followed him out the door in 70 and its been mostly downhill since then. Suggest you look into this because (a) the parallels are interesting and (B) like the Red Sox in the early 2000's, we are finally on a course to break the drought.

The ride will be interesting, but we are absolutely on the right track (finally).

great post AD, good to read an upbeat thread around here for a change!

I was in the states a few years ago and was shooting some Pool at a bar in New York with a few locals. Most of them thought AFL was Rugby, but one of the guys followed AFL quite closely and supported the Magpies. I'm glad you have a better choice in Team!

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
