However, we should have learnt by now that it's not only important that we get players with natural talent but it's how we develop that talent that counts.

Big fat, eff yeah from me...

We do look very accomplished in that area now thankfully.

Three ways this could play out I reckon if we end up with picks 3 & 4.

SCENARIO 1

We're forced to use pick 3 on Viney:

3. Viney

4. Toumpas

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Maybe a Rory Atkins?

SCENARIO 2

We can get Viney with our 2nd round pick

3. Toumpas

4. Stringer

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Viney

SCENARIO 3

We let GWS have Viney with pick 2.

3. Toumpas

4. Vlastuin

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Maybe a Rory Atkins?

Thoughts???

Scenario 3 ... NO WAY IN HELL. Jack Viney and MFC should commit - NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES. Send the world the message. He wants to play for us and nowhere else, and we want Jack above all others !!!

Agree with your scenario 1 and 2 ...getting Viney, Toumpas, Gartlett would be a huge boost. Gartlett is liken to Cyril Rioli, maybe better at same age. There you go. And at 24, more likely Sean Lynch, Tom Carter, or Jason Pongrecic.

Vlastuin seems the best of that crop...

We could really use a bona fide clearance winner with a bit of mongrel?

Sounds a lot like moloney but goes harder, could well shame a few of the blokes into going harder

I'd like us to try to pick up a hard at it mid like Vlastuin, hopefully with our midround comp pick

I'm starting to waver on Boak as I read of the Talent about in the 1st Rnd. Unless we can get Boak with a direct trade of players?

I like the sound of Wines after reading up & also Stringer, or *Hogan

Wines + Stringer + Vlastuin would be Dandy from the 1st Rnd.

if you had pick 5,6,7 yes (!!!)

1-Whitfield 2- Grundy 3- Viney 4- Toumpas 5- Stringer 6- Wines 7 - Vlastin 8- Mayes 9- Menzel 10-Plowman 11- Kennedy

so its at #12 Gartlett as best option clearly.

AND at pick 24 Jason Pongracic ... Dandenong Stingrays

Latest news on Pongracic

The 18-year-old co-captain of the Dandenong Stingrays has been named in the latest Australian Institute of Sport intake for under-18s.

The year 12 student is performing a juggling act of maintaining his studies at Koo Wee Rup Secondary College, football training during the week and playing competitively at the weekend. “It’s pretty hard to balance at times,” he said. But the Cranbourne teen, who would love to be drafted by Collingwood, makes use of his spare periods during school hours to catch up on his homework.

Stingrays coach Graeme Yeates called Pongracic “your classic on-ball, hard-at-the-footy type”. “He’s got a big, strong body and craves a contest,” Yeates said.

Pongracic, who is also part of the Vic Metro team currently competing at the AFL U18 National Championships, is hoping he’ll be drafted to his beloved Collingwood Magpies this year, but would gladly move to any club that recruited him.

Well that's a relief.

For a second there I thought every other club would need to leave him for Collingwood.

I think the better ball users will go higher than raw toughness, so I rate Viney around 6th-ish.

I wouldn't be surprised to see GWS pass Grundy for a ready made Mid who has the build to go, so Toumpas or Wines I can imagine @ GWS or even @ the Suns. They need 'ready to trot' players.

Whitfield & Grundy may slip a rung or 3.

Heres hoping anyway.

# Toumpas I had in my head as a small (176cm), until your post.

jack martin anyone

Oli Wines, a close friend of the Viney's is the closest to Martin type in this draft. however, Martin maybe a longer kick.Wines will go top 15 IMO, may go earlier.

I think you are going to eat your words, diesel.

Jack Viney will be great.

I totally agree with you for the first time ever. And by the way, he will play this Wednesday and show why he is worth a Pick as No.1,2 or 3. He is a beauty .

Whitfield had a shocker on Friday against Metro,he'd want to show more on Wednesday.

Maybe GWS will "let" Gold Coast win in round 20 to secure pick 1 and take Grundy, they seriously need him with Bogan on the way out.

Our best case scenario would be Grundy @ pick 3 and Viney @ pick 22 ish.Grundy will slot right in when Russian finishes and Gawn is an unknown quantity at this stage.

I'd still be happy with Viney and Grundy at picks 3 & 4.

For anyone interested, I tweeted Emma Quayle; the draft expert today and she replied saying that if the draft was held today with no exemptions or F/S, Jack would certainly be drafted in the top 10.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
