Aaron Davey

Re Tynan.

The only reason he may get dropped is because of a lack of fitness. The big ground our west may find him out. People who are singling him out for criticism are off the mark and should be looking elsewhere for scapegoats. I didn't see him squibb once.

I can tell you that the coaching staff had no problems with his hardness and application yesterday. As he gets used to the speed of the game he will learn to take a little more time to dispose of the ball. He is a great find.

Davey just can't play in a tight, congested game. We've known this for years. He at least provided some chasing but he no longer has electric pace and elite disposal. A fringe player at the moment.

To be honest, I thought Davey was one of the better take aways from yesterdays game. Not so much because he played a "benchmark" game, he didn't, but at least Davey showed effort and made decent decisions when he got the ball. It's been a while since aaron has looked hard, and on his toes. IMO There's space in the team for Davey and he looks like he wants it.

Davey needs to be sent to Casey for the rest of his contract.

Neeld needs to show that he means business.

Green might find himself at Casey for most of 2012 also.

Not really sure Davey deserved a game in the first place

Wonder if this was one of those who Neeld described as blind faith

For a so called experienced senior player who has proven ability being dropped to Casey would be more an embarrassment than a learning curve

My conclusion is his head isnt right and to get it right Davey needs to adapt to a coach who requires him to train and play out of his comfort zone

Otherwise he is finished at senior level

I'm sure Davey and a few others have been given game time to demonstrate whether they are worth persisting with or not for the rest of the season. This may last for a few rounds until they sink or swim. Not easy to dismiss entrenched players with lengthy high renumeration contracts despite what Neeld may say. On form alone Davey should not have been playing.

While I agree he is not at AFL level anymore, he played very well in 2009 and won the B&F. He has definitely dropped off from that level. Your habit of revising history to suit an opinion just shows you up.

Davey is a luxury we cant carry atm.

What???

I think the end of 2009 was when he received his last contract, and we have got very little from him since.

That was the era that Bailey had him playing behind the footy, receiving and delivering mainly because he was one of the only ones who could hit a target.

He has forgotten how to win his own footy

If every player has a clean slate, which is a tacit requirement when a new coach comes - you can't condemn Davey just yet.

We are all pretty raw at the moment but I am more focussed on our new LG than the previous one - I want to see them respond.

.

I think Davey is already well on the way to cashing his chips. Lost the leadership not lost his mojo.

But you are right its the current LG that should be focus.

Anything we get from the ex LG this year is a bonus. We got nothing collectively on Saturday from them.

I must 'fess I saw something during Sat's game I never thought Id witness.. Davey getting chased down and caught. Sad. doesnt bode well.

Seems a very pedestrian shadow of his one former greatness. Hope it was just an anomaly.

I also saw him lay 5 tackles and make the effort to smother an opposition players kick on 2 occasions....

Like I said in the selection thread, Davey did not play well on the weekend. But he tried alot harder than a few others.

You have hard mongrel, in and unders and you have outside runners who deliver and finish.

My concern is that whilst Aaron never fitted into the first category he no longer fits into the second either. You can be one or the other or a combination of both but neither ?

Wow. Watch the game again. I cannot believe you will walk away with the same opinion.

I thought Davey did some nice chase downs in the first half.

Btw, Tynan must be dropped. isn't ready. is currently a passenger. Nothing against the kid, but we don't give out free games to 18 year olds anymore just for the sake of it. Let him make mistsakes and develop at VFL level, not AFL.

Aaron Davey was recruited to be a flashy, fast, exciting player with great decision making.

In my eyes, he has lost all spark, no flashy plays. Boring to watch, can not chase down anyone (infact, gets chased down himself) and it always seems like he is kicking off his right boot. And all around, just doesn't show enough at an AFL level.

Last year I got his number on my jumper, and now I'm embarrassed to wear it to games.

Yeah drop Davey, Mc kenzie and start Bate in the guts please with couch

On a shocker of a day when everyone was down Davey was not the worst.

If you watch the clearances it was the BL outside midfielders who did the damage, so before we get rid of one of our few outside quick's take a breath.

11 possessions - 8 contested & 2 clearances when the highest clearance number anyone got was 5, 2 run downs and 1 goal was serviceable and not the worst.

In a team that has so much sameness about it, his skill and speed around the pack (note not in it) is very much required. Beside what like player do we have to replace him?

The best bit of today was Grimes and Neeld's press conference - the first bit of emotional grunt we saw all day. I believe Neeld will create the pressure needed to create diamonds, hopefully it won't take to long.

Totally agree with that, Brisbane seemed to have every pack situation surrounded with guys waiting for the ball to come out. It didn't matter which team won the ball initially, the ball was always going to be sharked by these outside mids. How does this happen?

Some responsibility has to rest with Neeld who seemed to let the backs kick out to the same side, run the ball along the one side of the boundary and kick to a flooded forward line, add to that the delay in getting Bate on and perhaps not throwing Clark in the ruck and giving Jamar a spell at full forward because both were being beaten in their respective positions.

he got a very very lot of leather in the fourth quarter, if only he had played like that earlier when the game was on the line.

Totally disagree. The outsiders enjoyed the largesse of the clearance winners on the inside and the lack of accountability of MFC players. You even noted that the largest number of clearances were 5 and you missed the crux of the issue. Did you notice Simon Black and Daniel Rich??? Hmmm

Davey stats harks of a players skirting the edges of the game. And a flat 11 possessions only highlights. He may not have arguably been the worst . OK he was a 3/10 not a 2/10 but his game and body language was along way from where it should have been.

You are easily impressed.

he got a very very lot of leather in the fourth quarter, if only he had played like that earlier when the game was on the line.

Given he had 11 possessions for the day, then all the leather he got in the last quarter does not add up to much or he was invisible for 3 quarters.

Davey should've been traded perhaps with some value left last yr. I can't remember the last time he af a blinder , he's definitely last a yard or 3 and his position is untenable. Why is Malthouse potting Watts regular spot when there is Flash (in the pan!).

At the same time I would love him to rejuvenate & get back to best don't get me wrong!

a funny thing about " Flashes" ..they burn very bright for a short while and then theyre gone.

Sound familiar ???

Davey has now been outed as the leaker to Mifsud. (he denies it)

The way he is playing and his body language screams "I am peed off and want out". The question is whether it is untenable or salvageable.

Davey has to be bannished to the VFL immediately and should not return until he can spit out 3-5 BOG performances. Pathetic!!!

Agree with part of your thoughts- should be dropped, brought back after 3,consistent good efforts.

Davey has now been outed as the leaker to Mifsud. (he denies it)

What sort of statement is that? Davey denies it, Neeld denies it, the Melbourne Football Club denies it.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
