I don't think he has it in him, there's a little too much squib in the man.

WOG for me yesterday.

Smashed by Hall in his first game. Until he can consistently 'get in the game' he should be at Casey. Even his disposal last night was poor.

Back in 2010 Jamie got Mark and Goal of the year nominations and I also remembering getting 4 goals as a small forward against Port Adelaide.

I would love to see this guy play as a small crumbing forward this year, I think he would be dangerous.

Will need to get more that his 5 possessions per game.

Maybe a small crumbing forward is his go, because he certainly can't play back. He's a ball watcher of the highest order and constantly loses his man in traffic. To be honest as much as I want the guy to succeed I just can't see it happening.

It's interesting how negative everyone is about all our players this pre-season as compared to the start of last season.

I also find myself very negative for some reason. Probably just the sustained long period of crapness has taken its toll.

But i think we are all being a bit too negative.

Bennel is a good young player. I think he could make it as a backman, he has pace and kicking skills and could be a Chris Yarran type i think. A relatively loose rebounding defender who sets up play. He will need to tighten up his defensive skills though.

Just a little perspective.

Last 3 years we have gone from 4 wins, to 5.5 wins, to 8.5 wins. We have been slowly (VERY slowly) improving.

We now have a strong key forward. Our kids are not so much kids anymore and should be ready to push on. We've got some stronger bodies in (Magner, Couch, Seller). By all accounts we should improve this season.

Plus, when you think about it, last year everything that could go wrong, did go wrong... surely we'll have a bit of luck this year.

i'm thinking 10 or even 11 wins!

Well said.

I think Jamie Bennell is progressing as a player steadily he is slowly improving his game last year his disposal were down compared to '10 but I think he should flourish under the new coaching team.

4 goals - against Port Adelaide - in greasy conditions where he hung out the back and was gifted a few.

Anyone sitting in a small forward position can have their lucky day, that was his.

It's an extremely hard position to play, I personally think it's one of the hardest positions to play, when you think of all the talented players across the league that have played the small forward role, and just suddenly gone missing, been delisted or shifted to another position.

I don't think Bennell has the smarts, strength, tenacity or perseverance to succeed as a small forward. Which is a shame, because his speed and occasional flare would be handy, and we are lacking in that area.

I'll actually be surprised if he keeps getting a game under Neeld, he has done nothing this pre-season and seems the sort of player than Neeld supposedly will not tolerate. Maybe he thinks he can make a Leon Davis down back out of him, I won't hold my breath.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment I'm afraid that I can't muster much enthusiasm for Bennell. I question how much time we have to give Jamie to develop into a consistent footballer, given he's been in the system for at least 3 years and this is his fourth. Apart from Jamie I agree with the rest of your post. On a personal note I get very excited by the likes of Howe, Clarke, and Magner. Finally I hope that in a couple of years time I write a post declaring what a gun Jamie Bennell is and what a nuffty I was to ever doubt him.

Remember his first year he played a couple of very good games, including one at Subi against West Coast which sticks in my mind, who incidentally later confirmed they intended drafting him with their next pick at that year's draft.

But for whatever reason, he hasn't really come on as I hoped. Not sure what it is though, but I still have some confidence in him that he has a role to play in the future.

Out of all the players on our list, I am the most disappointed with Jamie Bennell. I see him as a forward, shifting through the midfield. But unless he can contribute to at least three goals a week, he has to be able to pick up more possessions. Until he can do that, I would not be looking at him as a regular player once the real thing starts.

On talent an under-achiever at this point.

One of the group that will either thrive or be disposed of at the hand of Kim Jong Neeld.

I like what he brings to the table - unfortunately at this stage he sits at the table 5-10 times per game. He needs to be around the 20 times as I see him as a line breaker

I thought the old "Jamie Bennell" (where is he at/what do we do with him) thread might take AT LEAST least 3 to 4 matches to appear this year!

AMAAAAZING!

P.S. I wouldn't say too much more here guys..... unless you wanna get Old Dee started....HUUUUGE Bennell fan and he'd be getting up about now!! ~ Gulp

What is Demonland for if we can't discuss football matters in a reasonable fashion?

I see him as a line breaker

So do I but he does need to win his own pill a bit more .He'll come good.

Can't see him making guys, unfortunately.

If I see this pretender ever again...

I wonder if Isaac Weetra was gifted this many games, if he'd be a far better player than Bennell is. Probably.

He has terrific speed. There was a moment in yesterday's game where he started to wind up off half back and I though ``wow, let it rip'' and he then let go this looping handball that went above our player's head who had to then leap to try to grab it (and of course couldn't). Our player, incidentally, was surrounded by about five West Coast players. It was an utterly ridiculous choice by Bennell.

That passage, I think, sums him up. A potato at Melbourne. Maybe at a better club -- the Swans or West Coast -- they'd teach him to play and he'd have an impact. Not for us though.

Another high pick that just hasnt delivered.

Does anyone recall how long Travis Varcoe took to show something?

How many games he seemed to be gifted at Geelong whilst they were at the top?

And then one day after about 6 years it clicked, and he is a very valuable player for them.

Sometimes you have to wait that long.

Will the result be worth the wait?

That's the call you have to make.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
