Ex-Melbourne captain Brad Green speaks about losing leadership role

Brad's comments are pretty straight and good to hear him come out and say he still wants to be a positive presence around the club and to support the new leaders.

Bit disappointing to hear that the coach only spent a couple of minutes informing Brad he was being dropped from captaincy on the eve of the announcement of the two Jacks as co captains and that they have not had a chat since! Would have hoped the new senior coach would have picked up on the need to deal properly with the senior players after the way Junior was dealt with at the end of 2010 and Brad as Captain of the MFC in 2011should have had more than 5 minutes of the coaches time.

Timing is no doubt due to fact that Brad is appearing on behalf of the MFC this Thursday morning at a Bayside Breakfast along with Neil Craig and Jade Rawlings previewing the 2012 season. As the only one with any history with the MFC Brad is the one I would most want to hear from.

Brad Green is a quality guy and we spoke to him a few times during last year locally. He has always been very loyal to the MFC and he has our full support. As will the two Jacks as our new captains.

Well done Brad Green. You took it on the chin like a real man. However not being in the leadership group is unjust and unfair. Bad move by Mr Neeld.

Maybe its time the players stop getting treated like babies and only get a 2 minute talk when they are dropped from the leadership group. All I'd expect from Neeld would be to outline the reason behind his decision and what he wants Green and company to do better. If that only took 2 minutes then so be it.

They had to get over the Junior thing and now Brad and co have to get over this.

I agree with the decision to oust Jnr

I agree with the whole new for old policy .

As for the way bad news has been delivered by our club.

I don't think there is a nice way to say it .

The important thing is it has been said.

Actions count-words do not .

The old leadership group can show the way onfield .

Green will be the professional he is paid to be .

I wish Jnr all the very best with his new mates.

Progress we wanted and progress we shall have .

Somewhat insensitive by the coach and amateurish.

To the contrary-he is not here to make mates and play favourites with club stalwarts .

Amateurish is the best way to describe the attempted coup on CS .

Those associated with it have had the unnecessary burden of politics removed from them .

Good job too.

The slate is now clean.

Redemption awaits those that feel aggrieved .

Quality stuff from Brad. He will go down as a club legend, so he need not be Captain this year.

That said, I would love to see Brad regain his 2010 form, secure AA selection and re-sign with the club for another couple of years. That's the sort of leadership we need from him this year.

I heard Brad's interview. He is ok with it. Understands that it had to happen. 2011 was just not acceptable for the new coach. Brad has said he still wants to be a big part of 2012. Good on ya Brad. Once he runs out on the MCG with the crowd noise he will be fine.

Neeld has not been hired to be sensitive.

Im not a fan of this type of attitude, and it seems that ever since Neeld has taken over alot of people on here seem to have adopted it.

Sportsmen at the highest level will all say that a fair whack of the game is played between the ears, so i hope Neelds hard lined approach isnt effecting some of the older guys confidence, which could effect their on field performance too.

People used the job analogy for the scully situation, well what about for Brads? He's basically been demoted by a new boss who hasnt paid any respect to the job he had done for the club over the last 13 years.

I see it as Neeld telling Brad to just go out there and play Football. If he takes marks, kicks goals and helps to set up other chances he will still be leading.

I don't think Mark Neeld gives a damn about the past 13 years. That's what I like about him.

I love that Schwabby gets so involved and likes to drone on about our proud history. But I want the coach to be 100% present and future.

Brad is getting on. He needs to start focusing on his own game. He will be fighting for his spot this year. We have lots of mid size forwards.

He's been told like all players where the future is as Neeld sees it. He has two choices in regard that. He has accepted that he wants to be part of the future. Smart choice.

I don't think Brad knows what his role is at the club. He'll continue to lead informally, if that's ok but I don't think he expects to be told if that is ok either.

I thought stucture, defined roles was the order of the FD. I would assume that goes beyond 120 minutes on the weekend

I hope the players learn to play for the coach and he can communicate before, during and after a match.

Funny you should say that, as Brad had a defined leadership role in 2011...

He will slot straight back into the side and impart his experience and knowledge as required, and get back to what he is comfortable with - getting the footy and kicking goals.

Can't say that we have enjoyed a great deal of success over the last 13 years. There is a saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I say if it's broke lets get in the mechanic.

Agree. The Footy Department has had a complete engine rebuild. We have to wait to see how well built and reliable that build is.

Thank god we have isolated the reason for the lack success down to Brad Green. We should have delisted him. He is clearly a jinx.

Was actually referring to the team as a whole and what neeld sees as the way forward to bringing a winning culture back to the club. If I don't have trust I don't have much. Will endeavour to be clearer in the future so as to avoid all those sentimentalists.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.
