Narrowing in on either Grimes or Trengove for Captain

Fear-mongering and hyperbole at its finest.

Not at all. It's a fact, from the horses mouth a couple of years back. I want him to play but it won't be easy.

Once your back goes it is a case of management. My mum was a nurse and heavy lifting cursed her 40 years ago. Acupuncture is great, but AFL plays havoc with a back injury

Yes, a lot of people have back injuries and are forced to manage them.

So what?

It has not been a problem for years - he has managed it - as many do.

And if Grimes is so close to shattering his porcelain body, why is he still on the list?

Why haven't we traded him and cashed in on him while there's still time??

If he's on the list, it's because he's expected to play.

If he were guaranteed to play all 22 games for the next 3 years, would you then make him captain?

I'd actually pick Grimes.

And he has won the club's leadership award the last 2 seasons, so the football dept might agree.

Trengove is still a kid.

Grimes is actually a man.

I don't think that FD would agree. They're not here anymore

Remember the words of NEELD. It's a clean slate, the past counts for nothing.

I have said it before - we have no perfect candidate (or near it).

We are like the Republicans over in the US - arguing over the merits of every faulty candidate.

The new Captain will have his flaws because there is no flawless candidate.

So the FD should choose a flawed leader that will help the club. Either inspire that player, inspire his teammates, or help develop that player.

of course that would make for serious consideration. But i doubt it will become reality. If it does E25 drinks will be had.

Very true, but the question is, who do you think is the best of the flawed candidates..?

I think as neeld says he knows who he wants it will be green for sure. We know the players rate him with what they have said. The opposition coaches rate him re eade giving him the Australian honors and finally from what I know there would not be many at the club that are as professional. Too many questions remain over grimes and trenners is a tear or 2 away. Let the kid develop.

Wouldn't have a clue if it is based primarily on what Neeld and co. see every day in PS and team meetings.

My inkling is Moloney.

I would like Grimes to be able to stay on the pitch but he is a born leader so if they think his body is right he would be a huge chance.

Trengove has to show the FD that he can force himself upon the group and get most to follow - could he have done that at 20? I don't know.

Jones should be a chance given his record but I just don't see it. I can't see him demanding his teammates to do what is required (but we don't have many that fit that criteria).

Jamar should be looking at the LG before thinking about captaincy.

Green should concentrate on being a valuable member of the 22.

Davey should do the same.

Rivers has awful body language and is surprised when asked about his captaincy credentials.

Watts will grow into a very confident leader but he has to continue his development and from Neelds comments a few months ago - the microscope will be on him in house. He will have enough to worry about.

I think that is all of them.

Can anyone share details on what the criteria is for the RDB leadership award that Grimes won last season?

Is it voted on by team-mates, FD, etc..?

Fear-mongering and hyperbole at its finest.

He's had chronic injuries since his junior days playing with Hurstbridge and was the reason he slipped in the draft.

Look I don't think anyone here disputes he is a great leader but just think Trengove is a better fit long term. The way you're going on it sounds like you reckon the place has gone to the dogs if we appoint Trengove as captain.

JT BOG's will lift the team...& all of us in the stands!! If he also tosses the coin then it is a bonus...

In his 2 seasons and 37 games, he has polled one Brownlow vote. It's like all the hype and excitement of getting the number 1 and 2 draft picks in such a stacked draft has been put on the shoulders of Trengove since Scully's departure. He has done nothing on field to suggest he is the next Wayne Carey or worthy of being a captain at 20. Obviously he has stacks of potential but lumping all this expectation and demanding him to be made the captain so early doesn't seem healthy.

That is exactly why i question him being captain in 2012...I think his Football is more important than the captaincy...but as others have said we do lack serious leaders on our list at present.

Like David Warner ,you either have it or you dont .Jack T has it . A Brownlow is a matter of time .

sorry, left out that i'd 100% respect giving Green another chance, his passion and effort can't be beaten, he'll end up like James McDonald, not the greatest player but gives his all and contributes

I'm totally with you on this one. Leave the kids to play. I'd stick with Greeny, he will have learnt a lot from last years experience.

If you give the job to Grimes who will be the captain for the other half of the season?

If he's such a certainty to be injured, why haven't we traded or delisted him?

And if he was to get injured, wouldn't the vice captain take over? Isn't that the whole purpose of the vice captaincy role?

That's not an answer and it could be said for every player on the list - just let them play footy.

We've seen he can play.

I'm waiting for him to lead the club.

You obviously don't get it Artie so whatever.

After mulling over this a bit I actually think they would be best leaving it with Green for another season and having Trengove/Grimes as VC/DVC and then changing over the captaincy for 2013. Let Grimes focus on getting through a season uninterrupted and let JT focus on improving his game and developing into a leading midfield role. Lets face it the role of captain is more symbolic these days anyway, regardless of title natural leaders will still lead on the field and the track but giving it to a young and/or injury-plagued player will create additional external pressure through the media and fans which is not needed at this stage.

Having said that whoever they give it to I'm sure will be the right choice. I have confidence in the coaches/FD to make the right choice and they know the playing group more intimately than we do. If they decide to go with a new captain as part of the new "Neeld" era then I'm all for it no matter who that may be.

Don't get it, or don't agree?

I think it's purely a narrow mindset that a player can't be captain because he was injured last year.

And the year before that and the year before that

While i dont like having the captaincy shared i have heard Neeld say he has not ruled it out

I predict just one captain though

Captain will come from

Trengove

Grimes

Frawley

Would be really surprised if Green retained the captaincy

My tip is Trengove

Leadership Group will come from

Trengove

Grimes

Frawley

Moloney

Green

Jamar

Jones

I think that Jamar will get into our leadership group

I really dont think Watts is quite ready to be part of the leadership group but i have no doubt his day will come

I wouldnt discount Frawley being captain even though his position is a defender

Maxwell at Collingwood seems to do ok

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
