In 2012 there may not be a "best 22" at all. It may depend to a large extent on who we're playing.

Against a tall forward line, our "best 22" could include Sellar, with he and Martin in defence.

To avoid being outmuscled in the midfield again, we'll load up with muscle, and our "best 22" could include Bate, Tapscott, even MacDonald or Bartram in the midfield.

If we need speed, we load up with speed - Blease, Bennell, Jetta.

And whatever games Gys & Bennell manage to get, I bet they won't play against Hawks or Pies for the next 2 or 3 years.

I bet we'll be much more strategic. More players will have specific roles, we'll put a lot more effort into countering opponents' strengths & exploiting their weaknesses and select accordingly.

jetta is actually quite slow, agree with everything you've said bar that

I think Gys in his third year will surprise a lot of people and play most games. I think Watts will be pushing for All Australian and I think Jurrah will kick 60+ goals with Clarke giving him a chop out.

Posted

Bate is definitely AFL standard, just needs the right mentor to help find his role.

We give Sellar a AFL lifeline and some people think he will be CHB and others think he will CHF...

The guy should be looking to be apart of the team but let's not kid ourselves - he has a long way to go to be anything more than depth.

Batram Frawley Rivers

Nicholson Garland Grimes

Bail Trengove Sylvia

Watts Clark Howe

Green Jurrah Martin

Jamar, Moloney, McKenzie

Bate Jones Davey Blease

You don't think our backline is still undersized? Garland and Rivers around the 192cm mark. I understand Garland has played well on athletic talls like Buddy in the past but what will we do when we come against teams with two KPF (Collingwood, Hawthorn, St Kilda etc). Frawley is still only about 194-5cm he needs another tall down there to help out.

Neeld has stated that Sellar is in his best 22. So

Bail Frawley Rivers

Garland Sellar/McDonald Blease

Jones Bate Watts

Jurrah Clark Howe

Davey Sellar/McDonald Green

Jamar Trengove Moloney

Martin McKenzie Sylvia Grimes

I just cannot see that Sellar will walk right in when he has struggled, under one of our now assistant coaches, to get a game at Adelaide over several years.........unless Craig knows of some specific Adelaide-related issue that has been fully corrected .

Posted

You blokes with Jurrah not in best 22 are kidding yourselves. Kicked 40 goals in a year where a lot decribed his year as ordinary. This in a side that often struggles to kick over 12 goals a game, Now he has a genuine big forward to yake some of the pressure off. Would have to be terribly out of form not to get a game.

I really think Martin could play as a KPD. His first games for the Dees were in the backline. He is quick enough to go with any gorilla, nearly 200cm and 100 kegs. As gutsy as Rivers is, he's too slow to play on a medium lead up forward and too small to go with the gorillas (see game against the Filth). Bartram is a good defensive pocket but I think Nicholson has the attributes to shut down a small, but create more drive. McDonald will put pressure on KPDs over the next couple of years. Davis could be a Garland type player when he improves his endurance.

Grimes and Bail will rotate through the midfield, hopefully Strauss can get back to free them up. Blease is still to prove himself but could provide an injection of speed that we need. If Gysberts stays fit, he will surprise a lot of people. Tapscott should be our Luke Ball in and under, did this well at Casey.

Howe is a natural footballer, great hands and nice skills. He will have very good year playing the fourth tall, teams will struggle to find a match up for him after Clark, Watts and Jurrah. Green needs to earn his spot this year, losing a bit of pace. Davey in the pocket, he can't handle the tag. If he can kick/set up a couple of goals a week and lay ten tackles with defensive pressure he will be playing a vital role.

It's a bit embarrassing leaving out :- Watts, Nicholson, Joel McDonald, Rivers, Gysberts,Jetta, Martin, Dunn, Bennell. oops almost forgot MORTON

What further embarrassments will occur in 2013 when Jack Viney walks in?

That could be a good topic for the mid year. WHO goes to allow for Jack and the 2 compensation picks?

I'm getting excited already bring on 2012

You left out Watts who'll be entering his fourth year ? How anyone can leave out Watts is beyond me.

I spent all last year defending Bate and now everyone want a piece of the Master .

Cant believe anyone would consider dropping Watts. He is Best 5.

I'm unable to justify Green in the team after last year .

I can see Bennell ,Nicho ,Jetta improving .

I liked what I saw in WATTS last year, but I have been to training a few times this year and he seems to be struggling.

I don't know whether he is dealing with the pressure of having to earn his spot.

A team to play finals in week 1 of 2012 finals - against say West Coast at the G:

B Bail Frawley Rivers

HB Garland Sellar Nicholson

C Jones Bate Grimes

HF Blease Clark Sylvia

FF Jamar Howe Watts

R Gawn Moloney Trengove

Int Gysberts Batram (tagger - not BP) Jurrah Green (sub)

Emerg Martin (v unlucky) Morton McKenzie McDonald MacDonald Davey Petterd Bennell Jetta Tapscott

Blease HFF for tackling, closing speed, push up and back the ground - link man through the middle.

If any of the above show some weakness (above the shoulders) then swap them out for someone who wants in - badly. IF Morton, Davey and Jurrah demand spots in our best 22 I reckon we'll be flying.

Remind me please, what month is it now and how long do we have until season 2012 commences? Watts put in his best season last year and moved ahead in leaps and bounds. I really think it is a bit premature to be judging him on his efforts in a handful of practice sessions so early in the preseason.

FCS people - Neeld has said Sellar is expected to challenge for the team, he is not assured of a spot.

What would he say about a 22 year old just drafted by the club?

Surely you understand they're presently challenging him and many other players with their aerobic abiiity ? Surely you understand that the training loads are greatly increased on last year and their bodies are adapting ? Surely you understand that Misson has sat down with Jack and gone through Nick Riewoldt's training programme, times, etc ? Surley you understand that they're one month into a long preseason ? Surely you understand that football drills, in which Jack excels, have hardly started while they're in this intensive running block ?

It's beyond comprehension that you would pick a best 22 late in November and not include Watts based on a new running programme that he's presently finding challenging.

Hey hardtack

It's almost xmas. 3 more weeks before the xmas break for them. Then they'll start introducing game plans based on the roles they want each to play and the fit bodies they have available the 2nd week into the new year.

NAB cup starts Feb 25 for us. It's closer than you think

Would love to see Green and Clark in the goal square, IMO Green played a great year at full foward 2 years ago. Let Watts Sylvia and Howe lead up from the half foward where all 3 have good hands, good pace and especially watts and sylvia long penetrating kicks. Have Jurrah and davey running back with that kick, sounds pretty dangerous.

think the back line is still a worry, Frawley can take the No. 1 foward and Garland is a solid defensive third tall type, between Grimes, Bail, Blease and Nicholson there is good rebound leg speed there its the second tall, CHB the rivers is playing at the moment that im not convinced about. Someone compared Riversto Maxwell and I think he would suit that role but a true CHB we lack.

any of the above have the ability to kick a bag if they play around goals all day. Will be fascinating to see how Neeld sets up the forwardline. Tough call for our opponents when you have your 5th/6th best defender l;ining up on Jurrah or Tricky Ricky petterd

Regardless, I still think you are premature with your assessment having been just a handful of sessions so far. Watts is a very smart kid and a naturally gifted player who will slot straight in. He put in a very strong season 2011 and was obviously feeling it towards the end... I have no doubt he will be rejuvenated by the Xmas break and we will see a much more committed Watts in January.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
