Lutz, what you've said is completely wrong. Compensation picks must be activated prior to the season. This was done to prevent tanking. Our compensation picks can only be used from next year onwards and we need to nominate before the season starts. Same for other clubs which received compensation picks this year. The order above can only change if picks are traded during trade week.

The Brisbane pick at pick 30 is because they activated one of their compensation picks prior to the season starting.

Most clubs will obviously nominate to use their picks next year as it's the first uncompromised draft for a few years (except for 4 17 year old's from this year's mini draft) and is meant to be a "super" draft. If we don't end up trading our compensation picks then I fully expect us to activate next season, especially given the fact we've already committed our first rounder to take Viney.

I don't want GWS to win a flag any time we're contending for it, but I hope the clubs succeeds and becomes popular in west Sydney.

I can't understand the thinking of wanting them to fail.

That would hurt the game and the AFL, and that hurts MFC.

Yeah, but it's not THAT good.

It's like most teams - a couple of stars, and bunch of good players and then the rest made up of filler.

By the time their kids are old enough to have a real impact, all the poached guns will be ready for retirement age.

yeah there's a lot of luck, I think only the first 4-5 picks are very good then it drops down pretty quickly so you just don't know what the AFL Giants will get.

9 out of the top 15 picks for GWS, and the same thing next year too. Add to that extra salary cap room, and their persmission to poach 1 x uncontracted player from each club, and you have a team that will have a premiership cup bought for it within the first decade of the clubs inception in to the competition.

i too wouuld love aussie rules (not 'afl') to conquer the unruly rugby boguns as much as the next person, but the afl's nose must be bloodied on this one. they wipe their feet on the tassie welcome mat and trash south australian football, two homes of football if ever there were. they create a tailor-made tv market for select victorian teams and they kill off two victorian teams. what happened to fitzroy was unforgivable. we now have an ugly 18 team mongrel which is only propped up by the good times of the australian economy and the white shoe brigade which runs the competition.

There is a bit of "cut your nose off to spite your face" in the way the AFL has gone about pushing further into NRL territory.

But it's still in the best interests of the game and the AFL, and therefore MFC, for GWS to thrive.

If a pick has not been activated but is traded to another team, that team can then activate it for the upcoming draft.

The team that already held it cannot.

I guess this could open up the possibility of tanking so you have a more valuable pick to trade, but you can't use it yourself.

It also gives the pick more value at the trade table if you have an unexpectedly poor season.

And a compensation pick just received this year can still be activated for the 2011 draft, but any 1st round picks will come after the 1st round is complete so as not to interfere with the building of GWS' list.

This has always been about INCREASING audience numbers and furthering the game.

Cost-benefit analysis of going to Tasmania would have show little benefit.

Exactly. Any support (as a Tasmanian) gave to a Tassie team would be secondary at best. As much as I'd love games here every second week, it makes no sense. I'm an MFC supporter through and through now, it's part of my makeup and I'd find it really tough to change. What might happen is that my kids grow up supporting the Tassie team instead of succumbing to my brainwashing, but this isn't growing support for the game, it's just diluting the support for other teams.

Let's remember though that WA was an Aussie Rules mad state well before the inception of the Eagles a mere 25 years ago and look how wealthy and successful they are. Many of the VFL club supporters converted to following the new WA based teams (a no-brainer considering the distance to the 'G' to come and watch a game). Rather than diluting the supporter base, think of it as developing greater rivalries.

And I'm with you, my kids are going to be Demons.

The difference being is that South Fremantle fans became Weagle supporters.

Tassie already supported the VFL teams and have carried that through. For possibly proximity reasons, they followed the VFL and therefore there is little growth for 'new' AFL support down there.
