Watson (their first round pick last year) and Duigan (mature aged recruit) were both picked up in an attempt to improve Carlton's shotty defence, Watson doesn't look ready yet and Warnock would be a huge upgrade on Duigan (who played 20 games this year).

Hale: was positionally valuable for Hawthorn but if he had been with us he might have been in the way of Martin's clear breakout year. Plus Gawn might not have gotten a taste this year either.

As it worked out, Hawthorn and Melbourne should both be happy. We also get 'street cred', for want of a better term, for sticking to our acceptable price.

Matthew Warnock gets the full measure of respect from me and I sincerely hope he finds a new club where he gets more opportunities, and stretches a hard-earned career for a few more years.

Of some of the clubs mentioned who could be interested in Warnock here's what I reckon we'd be lucky to get in return.

Adelaide: Sloane or Dangerfield if we threw in pick 12 with Warnock but unlikely. More likely their 2nd round pick which will be about pick 34.

Carlton: Russell in straight swap. Could take Bartram's spot in our back line.

GWS:Chance to get O'Merra or Kennedy in the mini draft if we packaged Warnock with pick 12.

Hawthorn: Ellis (see Russell with Carlton).

St. Kilda: Don't really know what they've got that we'd be keen on taking for Warnock. Farren Ray is someone that can play a run with role in the midfield but don't see them wanting to trade him.

Would also like to get a 3 way deal happening with any of these clubs and Brisbane to get Cornelius to Melbourne. Reckon he's someone who's ready to take on the responsability of playing FF but may struggle to do that in the next few seasons at Brisbane with Brown & Clark.

Unfortunate for Melbourne for him to want to go. There are virtually no MFC players who have developed and improved in the AFL this year and nearly all are playing with no confidence in the MFC system and in themselves. He is the type of player you need to win a premiership. It will be very fortunate for a new club in the hunt for a premiership where consistency, reliability and performance does matter. It will be interesting to see what clear, proven coaching and people management will produce in him. Warnock is a rare tall backman and one for a club to build a spine and structure around. This is possibly the start of many more who want out of Melbourne!!

Personally, I think there will be a lot of interest in him during trade week and I'll be very interested to see where he ends up going. Wherever it is, I hope he gets the gametime he deserves and gets a chance to show DB and the rest of his detractors exactly how good he can be.

I've been a detractor but totally agree with this. He's unfortunately a pinch-role player. Week-in, week-out he isn't the greatest because of many of the reasons noted - his disposal and his natural game being a man-on-man one rather than a floating one. However, as a one-on-one full back against the gorillas (Hall, Fevola, Brown, Tippett, Lynch et al) he is absolutely amazing. That's his role, and why we didn't play him against West Coast and park him on Lynch is beyond me.

No, in a purely negating role against a FF, he is good.

I can recall just as many matches where he has been smashed, as I can recall those where he has shut down a key threat.

The midfield hasn't helped his cause, but Frawley never gets smashed the way Warnock has been.

27 year-old journeymen who are deemed worthy of only a handful of games in a under performing season, do not warrant a 3 page response re their future prospects !
