Matthew Warnock wants out

Featured Replies

demand is what drives currency and I would suggest a ready made full back has an extremely high

currency currently.

Why.

Gold Coast want one to relieve Bock

Carlton want one to assist Jamison

Richmond need to sure up their back line

Hawthorn need to sure up their back line

North could use another key defender

GWS will want a ready made defender

1st rounder is all i'd expect Warnock might not be a world beater disposal wise

but he is rarely beaten one on one and he will be in demand

Clearly believe he has currency and I hope we aren't Jellyfish at the negotiating table.

Stop kidding yourselves.

Ask a fan of another club and ask them what they would give up for Matty Warnock.

Surely Carlton would be a good fit, both from their backline requirements and to join his brother there... straight swap for Brock McLean? :)

OR Bruce(they can have his trakkies tho) @ dorks OR Miller&Tia @ tiggers...........lol

Can't blame Warnock, good honest footballer.....wish his hardness would rub off onto plenty of our players before he goes.....S..t we find it hard too attract his type......

If we went by that logic Mclean would of been an end of 4th rounder

the wider public reckons the MFC are hopeless despots with an insipid culture of failure

and by and large they are right

thankfully Joe average has no say

demand drives currency full backs are in demand that is all...

I was being flippant.

Go and ask an official involved with another club's trade talks, then.

4 games at Melbourne.

Little. Currency.

Both clubs wanted him. Who won the race for Hale? Result we lost.

Nth did not want to lose Gibson. Who lost?

No MFC won at this stage. We didnt pay too much for a player that has not delivered to date.

Its not a matter of doing the deal its matter of not hocking the farm to do so.

I'd suggest after Roughead went down Hale has made the ultimate difference

He has made the ultimate difference in their structure.

His ruck work has been consistent and ability to kick goals useful he has

taken a key defender and the likes of Bruest and Rioli are allowed off the hook.

Well worth their investment when they are top 4

More logical that he goes to Carlton. He's as good a key defender as anyone they have and it would reunite the two brothers.

Straight swap for C. Judd.

Win/win.

Exactly what I was thinking - up until the Judd part. Watson (their first round pick last year) and Duigan (mature aged recruit) were both picked up in an attempt to improve Carlton's shotty defence, Watson doesn't look ready yet and Warnock would be a huge upgrade on Duigan (who played 20 games this year).

Surprised Adelaide don't figure into your equation, they lost Bock last year and his replacement Davis this year. Can only assume an established KPD would be high on their priority list.

Anyone who has watched a few Hawthorn games this year would agree David Hale has been a great pick up for the Hawks.

Since Roughead went down he has rucked around the ground and kicked goals.

That is exactly why they wanted him.

Hale has indeed been a very good pick up for the Hawks as he would have been for us.

HAWTHORN

GAIN: Josh Gibson,

Shaun Burgoyne.

Picks 39, 46, 58, 69, 70.

LOSE: Josh Kennedy, Ben McGlynn,

Mark Williams. Picks 9, 25, 41, 89

GRADE: A

Get on the Hawks now. They put a few noses out of joint but the end result is gold. Burgoyne, provided his dodgy knee comes good, changes the dynamics of the midfield. Gibson helps bolster the suspect defence. Won't lose sleep about saying goodbye to Williams or McGlynn but Kennedy hurts, given his pedigree and promise.

DRAFT ORDER: 39, 46, 57, 58, 69, 70, 73

NORTH MELBOURNE

GAIN: Picks 25, 41

LOSE: Josh Gibson. Pick 69

GRADE: C-

Losing Gibson not ideal but at least have bought time to sweet talk Jesse Smith back. Couldn't find homes for Daniel Harris and Sam Power.

DRAFT ORDER: 5, 21, 25, 37, 41, 53, 85

You make some bloody terrible arguments, but I would too if I were clutching at straws so desperately.

Uh... exaggerate much?

"ultimate difference"? Hahaha

Free up Breust & Rioli? Yeah, cos Rioli always lines up next to the FB...

What relevance does Roughead going down have?

If anything, it just means Hale was worth more to Hawthorn, than to us.

We lost Jamar, and Stef stepped into the breach to perform better than Hale would have, or did at Hawthorn.

Gawn got valuable match time that will aid & quicken his development.

Do you realise that for us to get Hale, North wanted us to give up pick 12?

Cook hasn't done anything yet, but in 2 years time you'd be regretting that you ever made this absurd suggestion, maybe even sooner.

Your complete and utter drivel has totally taken out of context what the point I was making

Your insights into football farcical.

Roughhead played much the same position and role Hale is taking now

Relieves in the ruck and spends time forward.

When forward he takes a key defender freeing up Bruest and Rioli

Hale's value to Hawthorn had been immense they'd view the trade successful

We were right not to pay pick 12 for Hale although your assessment of Cook is generous considering he cant crack

magoos.

What Hale represents is my original point demand drives currency regardless of ability

many sides need a player like Warnock regardless of his calibre we should expect a good deal.

Before you go off half cocked like a nut ball how about you refrain from the vitriol.

You have NFI.

All the above is irrelevant fluff really - the crux is that you said we were put to the sword by Hawthorn.

It's rot.

He may have value to the Hawks, but he was of less value to us and by virtue of what resources we had to offer North, we'd have had to pay overs.

It's not a case of hawthorn doing anything to us.

It's circumstances conspiring against us so that Hawthorn could offer slightly more than us and still pay a price tha was reasonable to them.

End of.

Hale: was positionally valuable for Hawthorn but if he had been with us he might have been in the way of Martin's clear breakout year. Plus Gawn might not have gotten a taste this year either.

As it worked out, Hawthorn and Melbourne should both be happy. We also get 'street cred', for want of a better term, for sticking to our acceptable price.

Matthew Warnock gets the full measure of respect from me and I sincerely hope he finds a new club where he gets more opportunities, and stretches a hard-earned career for a few more years.

Looks good in a snazzy hat, too.

Of some of the clubs mentioned who could be interested in Warnock here's what I reckon we'd be lucky to get in return.

Adelaide: Sloane or Dangerfield if we threw in pick 12 with Warnock but unlikely. More likely their 2nd round pick which will be about pick 34.

Carlton: Russell in straight swap. Could take Bartram's spot in our back line.

GWS:Chance to get O'Merra or Kennedy in the mini draft if we packaged Warnock with pick 12.

Hawthorn: Ellis (see Russell with Carlton).

St. Kilda: Don't really know what they've got that we'd be keen on taking for Warnock. Farren Ray is someone that can play a run with role in the midfield but don't see them wanting to trade him.

Would also like to get a 3 way deal happening with any of these clubs and Brisbane to get Cornelius to Melbourne. Reckon he's someone who's ready to take on the responsability of playing FF but may struggle to do that in the next few seasons at Brisbane with Brown & Clark.

Hale has indeed been a very good pick up for the Hawks as he would have been for us.

Given we had Martin and Gawn to develop the point is moot especially at that cost. Hawks paid over the odds for the insurance of a tilt at the flag. We would to gazump their offer both in draft picks and money. I am happy where our big men are at. Its not where our problems are.

Why would any club pay anything more than a token trade for Warnock, when they could just wait for the MFC to delist him (which is inevitable) and use their last draft pick on him?

It comes down to whether two clubs want him enough to compete with each other. A year ago they might have.

cant remember anyone posting this comment form the article on sportsnewsfirst....http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2011/09/05/melbourne-departures-start/

Unfortunate for Melbourne for him to want to go. There are virtually no MFC players who have developed and improved in the AFL this year and nearly all are playing with no confidence in the MFC system and in themselves. He is the type of player you need to win a premiership. It will be very fortunate for a new club in the hunt for a premiership where consistency, reliability and performance does matter. It will be interesting to see what clear, proven coaching and people management will produce in him. Warnock is a rare tall backman and one for a club to build a spine and structure around. This is possibly the start of many more who want out of Melbourne!!

Could this be his brother by any chance lol.....love the highlited bits, sounds a bit sour grapes imo lol

I have to remind everyone of what Warnock did to Barry Hall last year. 11 disposals, 1 mark, 1 behind, no goals. Hall kicked 80 goals that year. Warnock dominated him all over the ground, outmuscled him in marking contests, outsprinted him up the ground and introduced his face to the turf at least once. That is what he is capable of doing to the big forwards, and for some reason DB decided to shelve him and go with the younger backs all year instead. We desperately needed his size and strength against the Eagles and Pies in particular, and could have used him to shut out Hall again this year instead of letting him have his way with Frawley.

Personally, I think there will be a lot of interest in him during trade week and I'll be very interested to see where he ends up going. Wherever it is, I hope he gets the gametime he deserves and gets a chance to show DB and the rest of his detractors exactly how good he can be.

I've been a detractor but totally agree with this. He's unfortunately a pinch-role player. Week-in, week-out he isn't the greatest because of many of the reasons noted - his disposal and his natural game being a man-on-man one rather than a floating one. However, as a one-on-one full back against the gorillas (Hall, Fevola, Brown, Tippett, Lynch et al) he is absolutely amazing. That's his role, and why we didn't play him against West Coast and park him on Lynch is beyond me.

I'm a little disappointed, but not overly so, since I think he has good trade value - particularly to GWS (another first round pick, albeit a later one?)

No, in a purely negating role against a FF, he is good.

Not absolutely amazing.

I can recall just as many matches where he has been smashed, as I can recall those where he has shut down a key threat.

The midfield hasn't helped his cause, but Frawley never gets smashed the way Warnock has been.

27 year-old journeymen who are deemed worthy of only a handful of games in a under performing season, do not warrant a 3 page response re their future prospects !

Warnock and a late pick for Suckling? I'd be very happy with that personally. Could be a bit ambitious though.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
