Yeah, they lost it by a margin similar to ours on Saturday and Port then lost the grand final by a similar margin. His finals record is awful.

We need a coach with 'Grit', and 'Snarling Teeth', he has that part, but would the Northern Suits 'respect', someone not of their cloth?

DL has a reputation as a great match day coach and tactician. I think the question marks over him are more to do with his ability to work with the players on the training track. Basically the opposite of DB.

I'm not keen on Laidley as senior coach. Assistant maybe.

I think we can do better. We need more than a very good game day strategist. We need a field marshall. Someone with serious presence.

Agreed of the examples you have thrown up, his trading strategy/ record was not flash @ North.

From memory Jade Rawlings was another that didn't quite measure up.

However he did manage to offload Daniel Motlop & recruit Andrew Swallow (he seems to be travelling OK these days)

The Hawks recruited Max Bailey witht he No. 18 draft Pick they received for Jonothon Hay.

Its taken them 6 years to get him up & running, so that had no direct bearing on The Hawks 2008 flag.

You never know DL might have learn't a little along the way.

I just like the way the "JunkYard Dog" went about his playing career & enjoy his insights in the media.

Sure he's not a smooth great speaker however seems a hard edged smart alternative thinker to me.

Just my thoughts - Attack if you must.

You've got to be joking about eade and Williams. Clarkson is with the hawks. Laidley is ok. At least he will bring some passion.

Some ppl here are unbelievable Laidleys final season with the Roos was a disaster much Like baileys. We need an experienced coach aim for the stars and Laidley isn't a star

I think he would be a good appointment.

As good as some of the names being thrown around, if not better.

Might come a tad cheaper than Malthouse or Eade as well.

I wouldn't give him the head job,maybe the head assistant.

No thanks. I want someone who's climbed the mountain. Laidley did well with what he had but that's immaterial. His sides were pretenders that were exposed and flogged in finals. I want us to go hell for leather for Clarkson or Choco. I'm really starting to warm to the idea of Choco. He's an animal full of passion. I also want Trengove as captain. The old journeymen on our list can be led by a natural leader. I also want Scully to rack off. As someone who lives in Sydney, I'm going to give him a gob full at any game I attend here.

Yep, I agree Ned. I'm starting to warm to the Choco idea too. I think our boys were mollycodlled for too long. Treated like babies. Choco would give them a reality check and based on what he did during the bulk of his time with Port, get us tough, a bit dirty and very competitive. And given he teamed up with Laidley at Port, perhaps he could employ him as his right-hand man at the MFC.

5 of the last 6 coaches to win flags have been first time coaches with only Malthouse the experienced coach,so don't underestimate a Mark Neeld or Brenton Sanderson,although the former would be my pick.

I know. I'm from South Australia and have observed a couple of generations of Williams's. Initially I didn't like the idea but the guy is educated, a football animal and has something left to prove. He's also won a flag (that is the clincher). Malcolm Blight is barely sane too. The greats are often like that. You think Clarko is a balanced individual? That's what gets them the extra distance.

I think obviously we will aim for the best available (MM, AC etc), but to have DL as a back up is not too horrid a situation to be in. He would not be my absolute ideal, but there is fair chance my absolute ideal will not be available on a few levels.
