Changes for next week

Few names come to mind. Bate, Bennell are probably the ones calling for a demotion at the moment. Can't guarantee Nicholson or Strauss a game next week either.

I can't read Bailey any more, I can't see any discernible strategy. I thought that picking Bate & Dunn could only mean that we were putting "development" aside in order to give us more of a physical presence in the middle. But that's not how we used them. So why did we pick them in the first place?

And we don't seem to do a fraction of the research on the other team that they do on us. Clarkson matched his stars on our youngsters (e.g Hodge forward on Nicho), while we had the wrong defence for that forward line. We needed someone to sit on Burchill to stop them attacking from defence, but he had just as much a free run as we allowed Goddard & Bob Murphy when we let them smash us.

We seem to put in the same side irrespective of who we are playing. For example, Thompson & his Bombers showed everybody that the Cats' rebounding defenders don't like being matched up on, but whoever we choose on the forward line will leave Scarlett on his own the whole game and he'll destroy us.

So I don't see any changes, other than those forced by injury. Certainly no changes that will make the slightest difference against Geelong, because we don't have a plan to beat them.

Maybe we should do what Fremantle did last year and send the reserves team down the highway to get mauled by Geelong allowing the firsts to rest up for a red-hot crack at Carlton...

If we actually we lucky enough to play a Geelong 'home game' at the 'G then you might carry some faint hope but down there its a write-off.

It's a problem we've been open to all year due to cleaning out pretty strongly last year and then picking a lot of talls in the draft which means we don't get the instant increase in ready to go players.

Agree with Brown and Buckley. Cloke won a Copeland at 20 and Davis was a good goalsneak who dropped off but reinvented himself as a half-back.

Collingwood are also the best team in the league, which makes it pretty easy to carry a couple.

Cloke was always a promising key forward, he just had a couple of ups and downs. Davis could always play. Leigh Brown would still be a dud in most sides in most positions, but Collingwood invented a role he could succeed in. Buckley was never finished as an AFL player, he just got delisted, there are many success stories of young players getting recycled.

Dunn is not finished. As a 3rd tall he is very mobile, has a good long kick and can do negating roles. He is simply in a race for similar positions as Green, Howe, Jurrah and Petterd. Bate is finished. I'm happy for him to keep his spot next week but tell me if you were a recruiter watching him play you'd say he's not up to the level. If you can think of a position he could swap to and succeed in then I'm open to ideas, but it seems to me that half forward is his best go.

Gysberts has been shaky, up & down all this his 2nd Year. He needs a rest IMO to re energise. (out for Scully.)

He's better than Leigh Brown ,Chris Tarrant and numerous other premiership players .

Bate and Dunn performed better than I expected them to. Which is easy, given I expected them to play horrendously. Instead they played mediocrely. They both had a couple of moments, but in general I'm still unconvinced on both counts and I don't like that they're in the side.

However, the first player to go is Maric. He was utterly woeful today. His defensive work is non-existent, he doesn't run hard enough (more than once I sighted him merely ambling into position; this kind of attitude is why any attempt at a forward press falls apart for us) and he doesn't get enough of the ball, nor do anything special with it. I'm done with him, he's not good enough. Goodbye.

Bennell isn't much better, Strauss isn't having much of an influence offensively, and Gysberts turns it over every time he gets it.

As for replacements, well who is there? Davey? MacDonald? Evans? Bartram? Blease? Scully? I have no idea who is fit and/or ready to come in, but there are spots available, that's for sure.

Disagree. Putting in effort is all well and good but if he doesn't have the skillset required, he's useless.

BAtram has to come, our backline with the headless chook (nicohlson) and Dear in the headlights (Strauss) is far to loose and just leaks goals. He is the tightest defender we have, sooner him and MAcdonald come back the better our defence will be. Lets not worry to much about the running rebound.

You can't be serious mate? I reckon if you looked over the game again you'd see a lot of players were in a similar boat to him. And as for a lot of games where he does very little? He's one of our best younger players, what do you expect from him? 30 touches every week? He wasn't superb today but a long way off being dropped for his efforts. I think you'll find he deserves to be 'rested' as opposed to 'dropped'.

I do not care what anyone says we need a big target up front and that is why Gawn has to play for the rest of the year. It will also help Watts and Jurrah. Gawn also provides the added bonus of being able to go in the ruck as well. Martin can go down back or play as a ruck rover.

If Gawn had came into the side today instead of Bennell with Bate as sub we would have been a lot better off. Martin would have been a big help down back. Plus Gawn would have at least given us a better option up front allowing other players to play off him.

The big problem we have is that Bailey does not have a clue how to select a side that allows us to play to our advantage. I remind those that think Gawn is just another big bloke. He is taller than most so needs to be watched. Max is very agile for a big guy and has the ability to contest the ball at ground level. He does not get any shorter in the last quarter. Plus he is a very good tap ruckman if need in the forward line.
