Peter Ryan is an AFL.com.au reporter assigned to Melbourne and he is doing the Lord's work there.

Creates the doubt necessary for GWS and GC to overlook Viney in the nomionating process so when Barrett/Stevens/Robinson gets up their arses they can simply say - we didn't rate the kid as 1 or 2 in the draft.

We do some deals later in trade week and the matter is settled and Barrett can go and do what he does best.

Someone makes a good point in that article.

One recruiter said no club could go wrong with a player such as Viney.

Admittedly it was Todd who said that, but that's beside the point.

"O.Wines is an inside-mid with leadership qualities, -just like Viney- theyre almost the same player, they grew up / trained together.. now viney has 3 kgs on Greene, BUT wines has 3 kgs on viney!"

Viney is a better inside mid than Wines, Dan. Viney is quicker, has a better sidestep, is more aggressive, more manic at the contest, and is a more reliable kick over 30-40 metres. Viney doesn't have great penetration in his kicking, but he's very accurate over a shorter distance. Anyone who has watched a bit of Wines and researched him knows that his kicking is little better than average and lets him down on occasions.

And you're taking my discussion on weight out of context. Nothing is so absurdly absolute. If one player weighs a kilo more it doesn't make him a better player and no such assertion was made. My point was that if a player is a reasonable height, such as 178cm, then his natural core strength and bulk, is more important to his craft than 2cm in height. Gysberts is an inside mid and 189cm, but his natural core strength is no where near Viney's. Viney's core and bulk, not to mention break away pace, is far more of an advantage than Gyseberts centimetres. Are you reading Dingaling ?

The strongest, smartest, most competitive, and best inside mid available is Viney. The weight discussion I've already addressed.

Moving away from his pyhsical attributes - I have always loved his intangibles (a common phrase in the US). His leadership and his desire to improve and comitment to the contest is second to none.

I know that this kid will get the best out of himself, and when you are talking about a top 10 talent - that is massive and one of the reasons I would take him wherever we are forced to.

This will be my final point to you on Viney being "small", or "little". The key component with Viney and other contested ball winning maniacs is their weight. It's far more important than their height. Viney is already 3kg heavier than Toby Greene. Viney and Selwood spend their time getting head high tackles due to being first at the footy and being the lowest in the contest. For them weight, skill and attitude is far more important than a couple of cm.

If I was able to magically insert one player from another club into the Melbourne midfield with the aim of making a huge difference, it would be Sam Mitchell.

Viney is the same height as Mitchell. And he's currently only a couple of kilos lighter ... he'll make that up with half a pre-season.

We'll take Viney at 3 if we have to, but I'm bullish that a win-win deal can be structured where we won't have to.

The discussion about whether Viney is worth pick 3 is humorous. Deep inside JV reckons he's pick 1, hell he reckons he'll be the best player in the AFL. I laugh when I read the suggestion that we'll pass on him at 3, let him go to GWS and we'll get him back after 2 years. You know what - he'll say stuff you - and I will too.

Amazing that if we picked up Viney at 3, we would be the 1st club in HISTORY made to use a top 10 pick to secure a father-son..

Even Gary Ablett JR and Jobe Watson went at pick 40.

Ablett and Watson were selected before the AFL brought in the father-son bidding system in 2007. Previously clubs only had to use a second- or third-round pick. That's historical circumstance.

Anyway, name a player selected under father-son since 2007 that you think was actually worth a top-ten pick.

So if we picked him up in the 2nd round it would be an absolute steal. There is an easy way to ensure that happens and we can secure Caddy in the deal & allow Gold Coast to secure Tippett.

Im just not going to say it because it would be a little controversial - and thats not my style.

I've said it once, but i'll say it again. The AFL needs to look at having an independent reviewer of the F/S draft picks for this very reason, clubs shouldn't be forced into this situation where they're choosing between the son of a legend and wanting to pick the best player available to their pick. It should be a very simple situation where the reviewer determines what the appropriate draft position, the club takes it or leaves it and he goes into the draft for everybody.

But it should never be a case where a club is forced to pay way overs. It puts you in a lose/lose situation, either you take him and pay overs, or you don't take him and you're considered to be disrespectful to a legend.

Forgive my ignorance but just to clarify;

1. On October 5th is the Nomination of father-son eligible players bidding players and the morning of October 8th is the father-son eligible players bid meeting.

Is it at either of these 2 meetings that the discussion is had and agreements made as to GC and GWS interest in Jack and we then know if we would have to consider using pick 3 ?

2. Is it safe to say that if GC and GWS dont want Jack at either picks 1 or 2 that we could then select him with our pick in the 20s or would we have to be weary of other clubs interest in him also ?

Hard to say, but Im sure we are pushing hard to get Viney in the second round & we dont want to put our best bid on the table till after the FS bidding process.

Think Adelaide might give a bit, because we could effectively guarantee them Grundy an obvious long-term replacement for Tippett.

The hardest bit is to convince Caddy to come to us - might take one hell of a good deal & I reckon this could be the stumbling block.

The more this goes on, the more confident I am that Jack Viney will drop through to the 2nd round.
