WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

Featured Replies

This is a culture destroying call if we don't get Jack.

We have :

1. the son of a champion

2. he wants to play for MFC

3. we have invested 2 years ...

I've posted elsewhere that I'm a big fan of Jack Viney and the way he plays but I couldn't help notice the irony of your comments considering you style your website name after the legendary Norm Smith.

Norm was a champion of the club who brought two "sons" into the club.

The first wasn't really his son but he treated him like one and adopted him into his family home whilst a teenager. That "son" was Ron Barassi Junior and, like Norm, he became a champion of the Melbourne Football Club. The father/son rule was brought in for Ron - his father was one of the first Diggers killed in WWII. But in his first game for the club, Ron was 19th man and sat on the bench for the entire game even though the team was getting flogged. Then he was dropped the following week and it took him several weeks to get back in the side and for him to finally run out onto the field of play in a Melbourne guernsey.

Norm's other son was his "real" son Peter Smith who also played for the Melbourne Football Club. He wasn't much good as a footballer and, after a couple of seasons, he was cleared to Carlton. Not a single membership card was destroyed on the day he was cleared.

It doesn't matter if you're the son of a champion or anyone else in a team sport. You have to earn your place on merit and when we do confirm Jack Viney's nomination as a player with this club tomorrow, it won't just be because he's the son of a champion, but rather, because the club believes he's worthy of being so nominated.

Love the way all these "supporters" here are saying they will burn their membership if we dont take viney

Imo u guys should just fcuk off now as u obviously dont have enough faith in the club and its decisions to be saying things like that. The MFC has an onus to take the best available players at pick 3 + 4.

You really can't spell, can you, Oilslick?

This is what we are getting....

''We had a pretty good midfield at Echuca Primary, pretty physical, although Jack got told he wasn't allowed to tackle kids at school or be rough, because he used to hurt too many of them.

Echuca Primary...

The two of us

Good article about Viney and Ollie Wines. You can see they would both love to be at the Dees next year and I hope it's true. I really rate Wines.

Viney and Wines at the Dees next year ?

Worth bottling.

My only concern is that they're too similar. But if we can address some outside pace it's worthy of serious consideration.

I don't care if they are identical twins I want them at Melbourne, imagine them pushing each other over the next ten years and; Bruce would have a word to describe that.

As you say we can address the issue of outside pace another time but these two kids will be sensational together and the best part is they hate to lose, hate it.

Similar in the way they attack the man and the footy, and love to tackle. They are both maniacal at the contest and the man. Its a joy to watch. THey are both born leaders.

However if you've seen them play, their actual playing style is not too similar at all.

Id compare Jack Viney to Sam Mitchell/Joel Selwood.

Whereas Oliver WInes is closer to a Colin Sylvia/Trent Cotchin

The biggest difference between the two is that Wines loves to get forward of centre and hit the scoreboard.. Loves a goal. It is a great trait to have

Would kill to have both players at the MFC.

Footballnation.com.au

according to them MELBOURNE WILL select Jack Viney with their 3rd pick

I agree.

I think GC or GWS will nominate simply for the fact that we're pretty transparently going to select him wherever we need to.

I'm preparing myself for tomorrow when I hear that they've nominated him and we take him at 3 and move on. Hoping, of course, that they won't bid - but not expecting it.

Yes. I haven't seen enough of Wines.

But here's a tweet from Jane Wines, who I can only assume is Oliver's Mother:

Jane Wines ‏@janewines

@emmasq brilliant article "The two of us" Emma you just get it on so many levels as a journalist #positive #substance #accurateportral

If Mitch Clark played 22 games for the MFC this season, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

We'd have won at least 2 more games (St Kilda early in the year, Port in Darwin and Freo at the Dome as the candidates in my mind) and finished above Port and the Dogs.

Our draft picks (as they stand at the moment) would be 6 and 7 and it wouldn't even be a question that we'd be taking him early.

I'll just be happy when it's done - hopefully for a second rounder!

So yu are happy with Cale morton are you as a pick 4 were you? Reckon Sylvia is the 3rd best player out of the draft he came from? Lucas cook has really come on hasnt he? Sorry but the last few years the recruiting has left me with much faith.

Good synopsis, I would love to have these two at the Dees both extremely hard at the footy and as Sydney showed you can never have too many inside midfielders especially if they are capable of going forward.

Wines straight up reminds me of Martin strong tackler, yearns for the contest but is also capable over head. The only reason why he probably won't go top 3 is because he lacks leg speed but the same was said about Selwood, Black, Mitchell especially as he has good endurance (recorded 14.4 beep test). Recent Grand Finals have all been tight contested battles where the team who has the better contested mids will reign supreme. At the moment Jonesy is the only midfielder who wouldn't be out of place we still need another 2 or 3, Viney and Wines would be a good start.

I think these two would literally change the direction of our side. Speed is my only concern. If we can address that somehow we might be going places but I remember Neeld saying he wanted us to be the hardest team in the AFL to play - only Toumpas and these two come across as the types of players that would fit that mould.

I worry with the Whitfields and the jack martins that suyre they draw a lot of the footy and look talented but we've been there before with players like Cale and a few others I wont mention who looked great and super skilled at that level but were unable to handle the hardness of AFL footy.

Im dreading tomorrow morning. I really am. Im sorry I love the Demons but in the last few years they have made a lot of mistakes so I just really hope and pray that this wont be another one.

Viney is a sponsor's dream - if we go up the ladder kids could well be saying his name instead of Buddy's or Cyrils... That's what we need to be a powerhouse club - not just on field success but attracting a whole swarm of new kids to supporting the club through the characters and players at the club.

Viney reminds me a little in his attitude to Dustin Martin. When i read his predraft article and his bravado I assumed he would crash and burn but he did the opposite. Some people have a lot of belief and its almost like they create their own destiny. probably getting way ahead of myself with Viney but he comes across as the kind of bloke that will not accept second best or failure...

As for Gold Coast - they said to the media they rate Viney between 2-7. However I have heard from facebook sources that they will not nominate.

Echuca Primary...

Don't knock it, I played my first footy there....albeit many years before JV.

That's good news for us, do you have a link for the 2 to 7 ranking... Taking that on face value, it means there are five other players that they're considering for pick 2... Link?

Unless GC really rate him there, I don't think they will bid, specially if they rate him at the lower end of the range, because there it's a greater risk we won't take him...

If we got both Viney and Wines, can we call them Grapes?

Oh come on, it's better than "Scullgove".

Emma Quayle replied to my tweet today saying as it stands GC will bid on Viney.

Is it wrong of me to hope a little for this outcome if it stalls the mooted trades with Collingwood?

After her article about trading pick 4 I don't really rate her info.

What an awesome way to market our MFC wine products

can you show us the tweet????

Petterd, for a nothing pick. Can replace him maybe with Banfield.

They may need more than that.

Do you have a bag of potential names?

can you show us the tweet????

I have no idea how to that using my phone.

'Unless something changes over the next 24 hours GC will bid on Viney'

That's as good as I can do sorry.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
