Has a bit of a stock market feel to it doesn't it - we bought high and would be selling low if we sold right now. There's a heap of upside though, so my strategy would be to hold on as the potential dividend/payoff later far outweighs the salvage value we'd get now.

I know I'm late to the party but, as bb has intimated, this is a poor trading strategy. Decisions should be made based on the likelihood of future returns - not what you bought the stock for. You've got to forget about what you 'paid'.

(Furthermore, I don't think it applies here; all players are equal once they're on the list).

If we had a variety of tall, athletic, elite runners with good skills like Morton, who can play multiple roles, I'd consider trading him.

You trade surplus, Morton is not surplus.

The types of players you have a shortage or surplus of come into it, but I think you trade when you think you can improve your list. As bb has intimated, most players are 'trade-able' - it's just a matter of price.

He's in the VFL to work on his deficiencies and his article today on MFC website shows that even if he doesn't agree with them he at least understands the reasons for his demotion.

He seemed to improve from week 1 in the VFL to week 2 in the VFL which is promising. If he continues to improve his form and his game style then he'll be back in no time and better for it in the long run.

He's only in his 4th year. His first 2 were very good. His 3rd started with a hiccup, as did this year. We are going about this the right way by dropping him and working on his deficiencies. Half of this problem was caused by us rushing him back in the 22 straight from injury/not fixing these things last year.

Please provide examples of his disgraceful attitude. I haven't heard of any problem with his training or his off field behaviour.

His main problems seem to be lack of accountability and lack of hardness on field. These do not necessarily relate to a poor off field attitude.

4 years is no time for a tall developing player. Morton missed half a season last year because of a knee injury and had his pre season interupted by a finger injury this year.

You have no idea how bad or good his attitude is, or whether or not he gives a crap. It's a disgraceful comment to make unless you actually know what goes on inside the club or inside Cale's head.

We've given far far less talented players than Morton more time to prove themselves. IMO Cale's value on the open market is a lot lower than the value he represents to us long term, combined with his uniqueness as a player, means there is no point trading him.

I agree. I'd say he's in the VFL to rehabilitate - that word gets used all the time to describe injured players, but I think describes what's happening with him as well. Once he's "better" he'll be back in the seniors and probably better than he's ever been.

I wouldn't be writing Moreton off. Top 5 pick, 50 odd games, clean hands,can take a mark, can run, reasonable height, working on his deficiencies,starting to click for him at Casey, decent kid. Doesn't surprise me at all that other clubs would be looking at him and this is where we usually get done over Scott Thompson like.The acid test is on the football club to keep this group together and not allow them to walk.

Interesting that he is out of contract at season end and clubs are looking at him.Not sure if he would be a GWS target but I think he is a good player and the knee injury last year hs out him back a bit.

But interesting that Brad Gotch had a bit of a go at him about his motivation. I thnk he is a better player than Jetta or maybe even Bennell and maybe annoyed they are getting chosen ahead of him.

I will not question his training as i haven't seen a session in years...i am sure he wants to do the very best. But if he lacks the real "animal" on match day doesn't this just answer it all. Need to nurture high draft picks. There was a reason they were drafted so highly. A couple of backward steps during the learning phase is normal. Sylvia's history is an example of "I'd rather he played for us, than them", even with his patchy aggression and sometimes unaccountabilty.

It does make sense, I know what you mean.. It takes courage just to go out there and compete with these big boys. BUT nearly all AFL draftees have that sort of courage, and the courage to have a go at AFL. IT IS the Other C.O.U.R.A.G.E... that the MFC Has to get back into this Club.

Before we end this new rebuild Era like another southern Vic club... If Melbourne doesn't Learn to Become tough again like the '50's,,,,,,, then the Club may one day fold.

Totally agree Jaded. Cale just stopped growing last year and is now starting to fill out. He is not only player on our team that fails to go in hard.

I personally believe he will be a really good long term player for us. Would be a loss for us if he went to another club.

One thing Cale has in his favour are elite physical and skill attributes. He now has to concentrate of his deficiencies and lack of physicality.

His strengths could be elite

- Heigh (195cm)

- Running ability

- Prolific winner of the ball

- Overhead marking very much improved

- Can kick the ball, though he sometimes can kick it like Bruce used to

If he works on developing a bit more toughness and physicality to his game, he could become a really strong AFL player.

What he really need to do is get to 100kg ASAP. Once he's at that weight, completely safe for a player his height, he should finally have the body to trust the physical side of his game
