Morton being looked at by other clubs

Struggling?

Or just sent back to work on some aspects of his game at Casey?

Just like Petterd a couple of weeks before?

Who then came back and showed great form against Adelaide?

Or just continuing his natural development like many other players his age, taken in the same draft?

Even those who haven't been burdened by starting out with the body of a size 0 model?

It's all about patience and simple understanding.

He hasn't played a good game for over 2 years. Injuries are only part of the problem.

Natural development doesn't mean running past packs looking for a cheap kick, that's poor coaching.

Nice article from the man himself!

http://www.melbourne...90/default.aspx

Appears he knows exactly what is required from him to get back into the 1s. Best of luck to him.

Ah yes...if only Football was a game conducted on paper with quills we'd have this comp licked !!

Knowing and writing is one thing.. Doing seems and entirely different order of things.

Actually out og that article are a few things that , well me beig me, cause a littel cause for worry.

Now I know its only words but theyve been chosen for cause etc. Where he speaks of 'matching it" with any team. To me this is semi-defeatist. Youdont want to match it..you want to beat any team on the day. To me it speaks of where this FD sets the bar..They want to match it..to be competitive..and this possibly only. I bet Collingwood and Hawthorn , Geelong etc dont hink in terms of matching.. they think in terms of Besting .

Its good that they all have roles.. lovely isnt it.. FFS All players have roles..theres nothing new here...hello !! It sounds though they they seem so ensconced in the role playing that they myt be inadvertently suffocated by the terms of it.. Good players rise above such medicrity , great players rip the script apart.

So hows footy to be scored.. Melbourne 5 paragraphs 9 words 39 v Other etc ??

More concentration on the Sherrin..and less on writing me thinks .

Has a bit of a stock market feel to it doesn't it - we bought high and would be selling low if we sold right now. There's a heap of upside though, so my strategy would be to hold on as the potential dividend/payoff later far outweighs the salvage value we'd get now.

I know I'm late to the party but, as bb has intimated, this is a poor trading strategy. Decisions should be made based on the likelihood of future returns - not what you bought the stock for. You've got to forget about what you 'paid'.

(Furthermore, I don't think it applies here; all players are equal once they're on the list).

If we had a variety of tall, athletic, elite runners with good skills like Morton, who can play multiple roles, I'd consider trading him.

You trade surplus, Morton is not surplus.

The types of players you have a shortage or surplus of come into it, but I think you trade when you think you can improve your list. As bb has intimated, most players are 'trade-able' - it's just a matter of price.

Nothing article, on a nothing issue.

The club will still be desperate to hold onto him.

He's working on some deficiencies in his game at Casey.

His overall form is irrelevant, they will only be looking at the aspects deemed unacceptable - most likely his hardness, tackling, accountability.

How many touches he garners will be ignored in judging his performance.

If we do lose him, we'd want to get something bloody good in return.

Absolute minimum a top 10 draft pick.

He's always been the type that will take a long time to develop, and we've done most of the work.

How long is along time

we have given him 4 + years

i have no trouble with his skill

His attitude is disgracefull . He looks to me like he doesnt give a crap. If GWS want him give him away and at least save the $300 + grand

Big calls are a plenty, but I believe the next 5 or so weeks will make or break Morton's career.

He's in the VFL to work on his deficiencies and his article today on MFC website shows that even if he doesn't agree with them he at least understands the reasons for his demotion.

He seemed to improve from week 1 in the VFL to week 2 in the VFL which is promising. If he continues to improve his form and his game style then he'll be back in no time and better for it in the long run.

He's only in his 4th year. His first 2 were very good. His 3rd started with a hiccup, as did this year. We are going about this the right way by dropping him and working on his deficiencies. Half of this problem was caused by us rushing him back in the 22 straight from injury/not fixing these things last year.

Please provide examples of his disgraceful attitude. I haven't heard of any problem with his training or his off field behaviour.

His main problems seem to be lack of accountability and lack of hardness on field. These do not necessarily relate to a poor off field attitude.

Idiotic call.

4 years is no time for a tall developing player. Morton missed half a season last year because of a knee injury and had his pre season interupted by a finger injury this year.

You have no idea how bad or good his attitude is, or whether or not he gives a crap. It's a disgraceful comment to make unless you actually know what goes on inside the club or inside Cale's head.

We've given far far less talented players than Morton more time to prove themselves. IMO Cale's value on the open market is a lot lower than the value he represents to us long term, combined with his uniqueness as a player, means there is no point trading him.

I agree. I'd say he's in the VFL to rehabilitate - that word gets used all the time to describe injured players, but I think describes what's happening with him as well. Once he's "better" he'll be back in the seniors and probably better than he's ever been.

I reckon around about Rnd 16 would show the Club and all who care If he's up to it and changing his commitment to the team values.

I wouldn't be writing Moreton off. Top 5 pick, 50 odd games, clean hands, can take a mark, can run, reasonable height, working on his deficiencies, starting to click for him at Casey, decent kid. Doesn't surprise me at all that other clubs would be looking at him and this is where we usually get done over Scott Thompson like. The acid test is on the football club to keep this group together and not allow them to walk.

Interesting that he is out of contract at season end and clubs are looking at him.Not sure if he would be a GWS target but I think he is a good player and the knee injury last year hs out him back a bit.

But interesting that Brad Gotch had a bit of a go at him about his motivation. I thnk he is a better player than Jetta or maybe even Bennell and maybe annoyed they are getting chosen ahead of him.

A better play then Jetta or Bennell?

Your kidding!

Jetta and Bennell are very good young players.

Morton is one of the hardest trainers at the club, however Cotchin (Like Scully) is not afraid to get his own ball... He has courage, but lacks the real animal if this makes sense!!

I will not question his training as i haven't seen a session in years...i am sure he wants to do the very best. But if he lacks the real "animal" on match day doesn't this just answer it all. Is he going to get it back? Has he ever really had it? Because if not he will be a liability to his team mates in the future.

Even as an outside player you need a strong appetite for the contest surely.

What a joke three pages of rubbish by stupid people reacting to a stupid article written by a hack journalist of a now gossip paper, FFS get a grip.

Correct.

Need to nurture high draft picks. There was a reason they were drafted so highly. A couple of backward steps during the learning phase is normal. Sylvia's history is an example of "I'd rather he played for us, than them", even with his patchy aggression and sometimes unaccountabilty.

No-one will seriously consider cashing in 192cm 21yr 3mnth, midfielder/forward/free defender Cale Morton.

He'll be back!

It does make sense, I know what you mean.. It takes courage just to go out there and compete with these big boys. BUT nearly all AFL draftees have that sort of courage, and the courage to have a go at AFL. IT IS the Other C.O.U.R.A.G.E... that the MFC Has to get back into this Club.

Before we end this new rebuild Era like another southern Vic club... If Melbourne doesn't Learn to Become tough again like the '50's,,,,,,, then the Club may one day fold.

Real Courage, the Blood and guts type, is the only type to Win. Hayes, Hodge, JBrown, Dangerfield, Jamar, Maxwell, anyone like these.

One has to assess the potential of a player then the club shares responsibility to bring that player to full potential. Cale is potentially an elite player, very few runners oat 6'5". If we lose him we will be derelict

interesting article... seems to be a slight suggestion that he was dropped for not playing his role in the team properly in the last sentence... at least he acknowledges the importance of it.

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/114190/default.aspx

I think Cale should spend the next 5-6 weeks in the guts at Casey- playing at centre bounces and being forced to play an inside role.

he doesn't have to become an inside player, but he has to start developing this side of his game or he'll never become a great AFL player

He does have time on his side, so it is entirely his decision.

Going by what he has written he knows the rules that have been set.

+1

- To deliberately lose Cale would be a wonderful and really smart message to send to such a young playing group, particularly inview of the existing 50 odd game investment.

Totally agree Jaded. Cale just stopped growing last year and is now starting to fill out. He is not only player on our team that fails to go in hard.

I personally believe he will be a really good long term player for us. Would be a loss for us if he went to another club.

One thing Cale has in his favour are elite physical and skill attributes. He now has to concentrate of his deficiencies and lack of physicality.

His strengths could be elite

- Heigh (195cm)

- Running ability

- Prolific winner of the ball

- Overhead marking very much improved

- Can kick the ball, though he sometimes can kick it like Bruce used to

If he works on developing a bit more toughness and physicality to his game, he could become a really strong AFL player.

What he really need to do is get to 100kg ASAP. Once he's at that weight, completely safe for a player his height, he should finally have the body to trust the physical side of his game

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
