We are about to get key players back, how will we fit them in

With these Blease, Petterd, Scully and McKenzie becoming available in the next six weeks or so, who do we leave out of yesterday's side.

IMO all of them are in our best 22. I think McKenzie is particularly important for his intensity. He played very well in both Collingwood games last year, and I really hope he will be available for Queen's Birthday this year. If Blease gets fully fit and runs into form at Casey he could also solve our lack of run off half back and missing targets from there. I suspect once he plays at senior level he will be another Gysberts. It would be nice to see that happen in the second half of the year.

For each of them to be included, I think I would drop Bennell, Dunn and Bartram, and make Petterd sub. Sadly though I can't seem to fit Blease in without others being out with injuries or suspension which is sure to happen at some point over the course of the year.

What do others think?

I would want to hope none of our players who are currently on the sidelines would slot straight back into the seniors as soon as they are cleared to play by the medical staff.

Rather, their form playing for Casey upon their return form injury should be the sole determining factor, rather than their name, draft position or past performances.

This post assumes that happens, which it should in virtually all cases in a well run club.

I am particular excited at the prospect of getting Jordie McKenzie back into the fray, and Scully but only when he is 100% fit.

For such a young and unsung player, not a high draft pick, I am just so impressed by Jordie's intensity, something we have lacked so far for most of this year. A fine example for any young low draft pick or rookie.

I am not sure Blease is a key player yet. Be nice if he proved himself in the VFL first.

Scully and McKenzie when fit are very important to the team and other players will make way for them.

Petterd is competing for the medium sized forward role with Dunn.

I dont see Jordie or Scully performing Bartrams small defender role so he stays for mine.

We'll fit them in by dropping those that aren't performing.

Why not? If they're fit and ready to be in our best 22, why wouldn't you play them? It's not like they have to be punished by playing VFL just because they have been injured.

I concur- great position to be in. McKenzie and Scully are the only two mentioned that I believe are in our best 22. Blease-an unknown at this stage, would really need to star- to gain an entry into our current top 22.Petterd will get a go- when we get either an injury or form loss. Dunn & Bennell likely to make way.Bartram will not be replaced IMO. He is becoming a very important and key player for us in the backline. However Strauss would be the likely backline replacement if he went down.Tapscott in the back pocket- Strauss off half back flank.Or you never know- with Garland not performing well- Strauss may come in to replace him.

I wouldn't be holding my breath to see Scully in red and blue again

CRAP-will be there by Round 12- Queens birthday against magpies.

Scully and McKenzie walk straight into the side. Petterd doesn't, but he is playing better than Dunn atm IMO.

Bennell would be one player whose spot isn't secure. Bartram may be another but neither Scully nor McKenzie play his role. Jones would need to keep performing as he has the last couple of weeks to keep himself in the side.

Blease isn't close to MFC selection. He needs to start playing well at Casey first.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
