Simple really isn't it??!! I think Macdonald can play that role quite well, especially if Tapscott is played on the other flank. JMac's disposal is no worse than Grimes'.

He can't help it that whenever he gets the ball, all his team-mates decide to play a vertical game of dead fish. Our guys do not move from kick-ins. The criticism I do have is the mentality that it's okay to casually jog over and pick up the ball when you're on kick-in duties. When the opponents kick a behind, he should SPRINT to that bag of balls and pick it up, then SPRINT to the goal-square, at which point everyone else within 50 metres of him should SPRINT in unison, to provide some sort of options.

hear, hear. my thoughts exactly. our kick-in strategy is totally constipated might as well wave a huge white flag with kaspersky on it. the players seem programmed no room for individual decision-making ie davey could easily sprint around the defender and launch one over the scrum. at prsent we are just passing the ball to their forwards.

It seems like you and the OP agree on that.

Another reason for not having Grimes kick out, even if he's playing back, is that he's a pretty good mark and can thus be a useful target to kick to.

There is always at least someone to kick to. they could be a player that is 20m away right on the boundary line, deep in the pocket. Opposition teams leave a bloke open there because it's in a "dead" spot on the ground (meaning they are forced wide down the wing, or have to kick back to the goal square to try and break the zone). This is my arguement with Grimes; the fact that he is incompetent at hitting this type of target on a consistent basis. These kicks, whilst under no pressure in terms of getting tackled (becuase he is kicking out), does require him to hit a relatively small target so of course there is some pressure. I cringe when he is in this situation, as I have zero confidence in his ability to do this.

What I don't understand is why hasn't he improved this area of his game, considering it has been a flaw for the entire 28 of them? It has nothing to do with development from a coaching point of view. My expectation of Grimes would be extra training, which should be done in his own time, with a bag of footballs and a rubbish bin. And he should sit there for 30 mins or an hour, 2 or 3 nights a week, and practice kicking it in to the bin. I can't confirm if he does this, but I can assure you, if I knew that was a deficiency in my game, and I was a full time footballer, I'd owe it to my Employer to go out and change things. The best part, he wouldn't have to do it on his own becuase Colin Garland could easily join him.

I can remember a story about Scully as a junior where spent a few hours on a Sunday arvo doing something similar. The story was that he missed a target on his wrong foot, so he went out the next day (might have even been after the game) and spent a couple of hours kicking on that footy. That's the level of commitment I want from Jack if he wants to be a future leader of this Club.

Harsh? Maybe, but we're serious about being the best team of the decade. The best teams put in the extra miles.

IMO Grimesy's lost his nerve. He's not the most accurate kick, reliable, but not accurate. His target size is a little bit too big. So when he has to hit a target close the boundary he '[censored]' it, so tries to aim inboard from the line. This can create turnovers.

IMO he's a better kick on the run, better balanced then.

As far as players being in position, they get there, and stand stationary with their opponent,,, effectively taking out of the options. I reckon this is lazy, and not working. If their trying to draw a defender away, fine. But IMO, we need moving options,,, and more exacting kickers.

And in that style, we need Big guys trying to mark that ball @ 70 - 100 Mtrs out... If they can't get to the ball tell them to crash the pack hard. If we had Jurrah on a wing he would be handy swooping on the loose ball. We need to make the opposition at least flinch a bit, to take some of their focus off the ball.

We are Not physical enough at the contests, tackling, hit hard & leave them on the ground, or try to. Marking contest crash them,, we're too nice. We don't haveto be stupid about it, but they must feel it.

I remember hearing around footy circles a few years back that teams looked forward to playing us.
