A courageous club - by Dandeeman (Demonland)

Melbourne Cricket Club and Melbourne Football Club - 1st April , 2009.

The relationship between the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Melbourne Football Club is as old as the game itself. Our clubs share both heritage and heroes, sparked by the spirit of Tom Wills in 1858 as he sought a means of keeping his Melbourne cricketers fit during the winter months. A game was born, and so was the Melbourne Football Club.

If the MCG is 'the paddock that grew', we cultivated it together, through hope and hardship, with characters and colour, and with a shared heart that always beats true.

Let it be known that, on this day, the clubs again unite for the greater good, and with a spirit of mutuality and reciprocity.

Reference: Melbourne Football Club and Melbourne Cricket Club together again

The agreement includes:

- The MFC's use of the MCC name and logo as an MCC Sporting Section

- The MFC's administrative occupancy at the MCG

- MCC support of the MFC in relation to:

- Facilities

- Administration, business and commercial assistance and opportunities

- Financial

- Social and cultural

- Qualification for MCC Playing membership as per the club's guidelines

Great job pulling this together HT. Fantastic reminder of just how far we have come in such a short space of time.

I have to say, seeing that sort of thing does make you realise that the club is puttng together a fantastic narrative.

It is very deliberate, but the choice to start at "base camp" and sell the journey was a gutsy one for the oldest club in the world. In relation to the things within our control, it is being executed brilliantly.

Stynes, McLardy and Schwab in particular deserve enormous credit.

Nice work HT, thanks.

April 1 2009 is a day we should all remember. April Fools day for some, But for us it was the First step towards stability and success. B)

Actually, the first step was when Jim decided to put his hand up. I've updated the first two posts.

I knew you were going to say that! Jimma putting the hand up goes without saying. April 1 2009 is when it was all set in stone, and a moment most will forget.

Great job pulling this together HT. Fantastic reminder of just how far we have come in such a short space of time.

Note* - Have been adding/collating links, etc in with additional events over the duration of the journey. Will continue to do so, so we have something to remember and use as a resource.

I have included dandeeman's post.

After McLardy's interview on 3AW yesterday, I was curious to where the 'Red & Blue Print' could be found.

(Interview here:

This thread was the only hit that was returned by Google when I searched for it. Anyone know if this document is available to members?

Sorry if returning a 20 month old thread to the top of the most recent list aggravates anybody.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
