I wouldn't swap Rich for a top 30 pick this year.

Anyone who wouldn't trade pick 30 for Daniel Rich doesn't watch footy.

His kicking skills are the best in the afl. he's a weapon.

When he builds his endurance (inevitable after a few years in the afl) and learns how to deal with the regular tag a little better, he'll be a fine player for many years to come.

My thoughts too.

Don't understand why so many posters are so critical of him

Skillwise, I would have thought one of our biggest deficiencies was good kicking (a few obvious players excepted)

One good accurate penetrating kick from the midfield or half-back is worth half a dozen of those merry-go-round handpasses and sideways chip kicks

Looks a bit of a long shot though

In this draft I wouldn't.

He will never have elite endurance, it may improve, but not enough in my opinion. Other players like Davey do not have huge natural endurance, but make up for it with speed, Rich will never have that pace either.

He had been playing and training at senior level in the WAFL for two years before being drafted, unlike most draftees, and has now done two preseason’s and played two years. He should have reached a superior endurance level to most blokes his age. Players need more than a good kick and a solid build to make it. He struggles to match it over head, isn't fast, and can't outwork a tagger.

Will have a good career, but nothing special.

You obviously don't understand the depth and strength of this draft.

His kicking skills are not the best in the AFL. Sorry. Try again.

Building his endurance is not a fait accompli as you seem to think.

This is why they measure things like VO2 max.

I can't see Rich improving much at all in the future.

Like a lot of players, his physical limitations will be his Achilles heel.

Bear with me here E25

I've heard a lot of people say the same thing of this draft

As I understand it, this years draft only represents about 8 months of the age group, because last year the GC17 had open slather on the Jan-Apr 17YOs. Wouldn't this weaken the draft?

Even if this wasn't so, just how does someone measure the "depth" and "strength". Is this just the subjective opinion of the recruiting officers and administrators? How do you quantify this?

Serious question, I want to better understand it - not doubting it all

People have been saying its a strong batch of kids, but it is not considered a 'super draft'. Besides which, even in the super drafts of the past, at least 50% of the 2nd rounders don't make it, and that's being conservative.

It is a weakened draft for 2 reasons. Like u said GC17 had access to 10 of the best of last years 17 yr olds, while GWS has the same access to this years 17 yr olds. Also, 2 of the top 15 players of this year's draft (Wallis and Liberatore) are off-limits bc they are father son picks.

I find it quite remarkable that some people on this website wouldn't trade pick 30 for Daniel Rich. What an absurd option. If any club in the afl, in fact i'd go as far as to assume 99.9% of football fans out there, would take that deal, laughing all the way to the bank.

Even without the 17 year olds, this draft looks to be exceptionally strong and deep.

It is scary to think how good this draft would be if left untainted.

Of course it is all subjective.

I base it on what I have seen from potential draftees and supplement that with what I can read about them.

I think this draft looks to be as good as the one in 2006. It looks like I'm not alone in rating it highly.

A lot of recruiters have spoken of it favourably.

The 2006 draft, as an example, was full of quality and ran deep, with not only Frawley at 12 & Jack Riewoldt at 13, but players like Chris Dawes at 28, Petterd at 30 and Kurt Tippett at 32.

Brad Dick at 44, Col Garland at 46, David Mackay at 48.

Jesse White at 79. There are heaps more. It was a freak draft.

We did awesome out of that 2006 draft btw, but using the 'super draft' of 2006.

Players who have been disappointments, considering their draft position and that they're had a few years at afl level by now

- Mitch Thorp- pick 6

- Arjet Everitt- pick 11

- James Seller- pick 14

- Daniel O'keefe- pick 15

- Mitch Brown- pick 16

- Shaun Hampson- pick 17

- Leroy Jetta- pick 18

- Tom Hislop- pick 20

- Albert Proud- pick 22

- Nathan Djekurra pick 25

- Shane Edwards- pick 26

- Brad Howard- pick 27

- Eric McKenzie- pick 29

- Clayton Collard- pick 31

- Jaryn Morton- pick 33

- Mark Austin- pick 35

... i could go on but the lower picks have even a higher failure rate.

Other top 30 players who have shown some fleeting signs, but not consistently at all

- Fumbleton- pick 2

- Hanson- pick 3

- Nathan Brown- pick 10

- Shaun Grigg- pick 19

- Paul Stewert- pick 23

- Brent Renouf- pick 24

That's 22 out of the top 35 i've mentioned.

The draft is, and always will be, somewhat of a lottery, especially once you get out of the first round.

No draft pick is a certainty (though top 3 picks you can be pretty sure), especially not pick 30.

I only raise this point bc i'm curious as to how anyone would reject Rich for pick 30.

In a couple of years Rich will be put in a list like the one you've created.

Rich is a good player right now and will only get better.

Have to agree.

He has had two seasons. First season was a blinder for a first year player. He'll be a more rounded player, with greater strength. This season might not appear as good, but as you say he can only get better. Most players usually improve in certain areas of their game after their first two seasons.

Posted

But he is already rated higher than all of those mentioned?

Rich is a good player right now and will only get better.

By you maybe.

He is wildly overrated.

The kid has a good kick on him and very little else.

I would love Rich at this club. Our first and second round pick would be nice deal for both parties.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
