Measuring player success

It's very easy these days to get caught up in statistics and to refer to them when judging a players game. But I've found that this season the majority of goals conceded have been related to our errors.

For instance:

-Jamar hitting the ball into the empty central corridor for the Saints player to run onto and kick the goal

-Moloney handballing straight to the opposition in the first quarter.

-Kyle Cheney 50metre penalty

-Jack Watts missed target to a melbourne player. That resulted in a shot on goal (not sure if it went through),

-Watts missing the spoil altogether and going to ground allowing the Saints player to run into the 50 and slot one.

-Frawley kicking out but stepping over the line. (Didn't result in a goal however)

- Whoever the player was that gave a free kick to Dal Santo in the first quarter. It wasn't necessary and cost us a goal.

-Neville Jetta lined up a Saints bloke to bump but missed him altogether and the Saints just ran in their numbers before Hayes kicked a goal.

One thing we didn't do today was kick into the man on the mark.

just out of interest, did anyone else notice these errors. If not, what errors stick in your mind?? (and yes, i know im focussing on the negative but whatever!)

what about jamar hitting the ball through the goals deliberately and costing us a goal. last week he did it against Adelaide and hit it straight to Tippet who gaoled. absolute brain fade of the highest order. you would have thought someone got in jamar's ear during week and told him it would result in a gaol - being deliberate and all and not under pressure.

Very good post and signs of the team not showing football smarts....errors/turnovers kill any efforts to improve our win/loss ratio

I'd reckon most goals kicked in Aussie Rules footy come from errors such as those outlined.

IMO it's about limiting your own errors and maximizing the opportunity to create opposition errors.

I disagree, there's no need to make brain fade mistakes. Most of the goals of the top 4 teams occurs from great football. You don't see Geelong making any silly mistakes. They all have a high football IQ. We only have a few that seem to have it.

A couple of error's....silly I'll give you that and that nullifies everything that Jamar has done this year does it???!!!

What an incredibly thoughtless post. The Russian got us over the line against Port and the 2 points against Collingwood. Not to mention his domination in the centre as a lone ruckman, he probably had as big a hand in our other victories.

Clearly he went to smack it over the line BOTH times, If that was the case then it would seem NO ONE told him during the week that this is illegal and a free kick would be awarded against him. So, who is responsible for this not being picked up and Russian not advised? If he was then serious brain fade, but does not make all his hard work and effort through this year and the end of last year redundant.

Yeah, they played faultless football to be held scoreless for a qtr and only 3 points in an entire half.

Teams make mistakes whether they are top teams or bottom teams. Mistakes are not just the domain of the bottom 12 clubs. Top teams do it and often do it in September. Most of the goals of the top 4 teams comes from a combination of great football (when pushed by a willing opponent) and the ability to pressure lesser teams to turn the ball over and capitalise on the error. Geelong, St Kilda and Collingwood all do this and often win games without having to demonstrably great football. High football IQ??? Its about being capable, talent, disciplined and experienced. MFC are trying to settle and develop those that can do those sort of traits and demonstrate them consistently.

Where do you recommend he hit when its deep in the opponents forward line and they have set up a wall?

It is what most good players would do in that situation.

Seriously, I am not sure what you expected him to do? It is not his fault whoever was playing on Tippet decided that he wouldn't man him up at the stoppage. Blame Tippet's direct opponent at the time, who should have been there to force the ball over the line.

Well it would be really nice if it were a Demon player goal side in every goal square ruck but this is rearely the case we have given easy gaols in that location all year and all the training since hasnt seemed to help. It appears it is poor communication amongst players
