Pick Your 2013 Team

Recommended Posts

Given many of us believe that our premiership window will open about 2013 pick what you think our team will look like come round 1 and no injuries. Obviously each will have their own opinions but i believe the core will look something like this:

B Bail Warnock Morton

HB Grimes Frawley Moloney

C Blease Scully Davey

HF Tapscott Watts Sylvia

F Jurrah Bate Bennell

Fol Jamar Trengove Gysberts

Int Fitzpatrick Strauss Wonaeamirri Jones

Pushing for selection:

Gawn, Jetta, Garland, Macdonald, McKenzie,

Retired:

Green, McDonald, Bruce

Unknowns include draft pick this year and likely father son in Viney in 2011 or 2012.

.......just a little firm thinking about that sort of team.

So very few rate Morton. Thank goodness you guys aren't picking the team

Agree 100%. Severely underated on this site. Imo, of all the players on our list, he has the greatest scope to be an absolute superstar of the game.

If he develops his body, and maintains his ability, i foresee Goddard-esk ability. With his height (194cm) and overhead marking, he could even potentially be a CHF.

And he plays extremely well all the time, people just refuse to give him credit sometimes

He's in the wing on mine, that's where I feel he plays best

It's worth remembering that warnock is already 26 years old and will be 29 by the time 2013 comes around.

Who knows if he'll still be performing at his current level in 3 years time. If he is, then i'd say he's got to still be in the back line to give us 3 tall backmen.

I'm going to assume that Warnock remains in our top 22 in my team:

B: Bartram Warnock Garland

HB: Strauss Frawley Grimes

C: Moloney Morton Trengove

HF: Davey Watts Sylvia

F: Petterd Bate Jurrah

Fol: Jamar Gysberts Scully

Int: Fitzpatrick, Tapscott, Blease, Green

Players i want to include, but not sure where they fit: McKenzie, Gawn, Jetta, Bail, Aussie, Bennell, Jones.

Some of the guys i hope will be in our top 22 by then are Fitzpatrick (to provide the 2nd tall marking forward), Aussie (he provides us with so much spark and forward pressure when healthy), McKenzie (he's fantastic but where do you fit him in).

The thing i found with this exercise is that its so bloody hard because i could also think of lineups where half the guys i metioned who wouldn't be in the top 22 could equally be in the team. Talk about have plenty of riches in terms of talent. Then we add Jack Viney, and potentially some more key position prospects from this draft (there's quite a few good forwards this year) and the dilemma gets even tougher.

Edit: added fitzpatrick into the top 22 as the 2nd ruck man.

Based on what we know now of course this would be my team. I am also assuming by then the AFL will have brought in "Reserves" ie those players who can replace injured players during the game but cannot act as inter-change until the replacement is made. Given that most teams run injured players this means teams will effectively be 26 person teams, a good move IMO.

B Viney Warnock Morton

HB Davey Frawley Moloney

C Blease Gysberts Grimes

HF Tapscott Watts Petterd

F Jurrah Fitzpatrick Bate

Fol Jamar Trengove Scully

Int Gawn Green Jones Sylvia

Reserves: Wonaeamirri Strauss Garland McKenzie

Viney (new)

NOT A HALF BAD TEAM INCIDENTLY

Of the current list playing regularly, the following miss out:

Bruce, McDonald (Retired)

Rivers Dunn(GWS) Miller Bail(GC)

Bartrum, Jetta, Bennell. Cheney, Maric, Martin (still on list)

Bell Johnson Meesem Newton MacDonald Spencer Macnamara Hughes(delisted)

Also, would not be surprised if Demons went after Alwyn Davey in the off season for early picks (he will be out of contract). Would be a brilliant acquisition for us in my opinion. Fits in perfectly to our setup. I also would not be surprised if we tried to trade for an established Full Forward.

I agree. He will add bulk and he is one of those players who has poise and time no matter the situation. He will be the swingman, capable of playing anywhere.

Nope. Please no. no.

Sorry DP but the last thing we need is another small bloke. Think long term. What do we have a heap of (smalls and mediums), what do we desperately need TALLS. (Especially given Viney will be a father son and he is apparently a very talented on baller).

Yes we have Gawn and Fitzpatrick in the wings but that is it. Still not convinced re Spencer.

Keep the early pick. Trade Miller (& get compo for Petterd if he wants to go) to GC17 for another first round pick and use them both on big blokes. Fill the list out with some size and strength. That is what we desperately need.

Is he purely an outside player? He does a great job as a tall wingman or linkman who can find space and set himself up as a free target for our defenders. I just don't see him win enough contested possessions at this stage.

lol, no mention of Jamar at all in that thread!

There is a difference between the old thread that was predicting the 2010 team and this thread.

Firstly, 3-4 years ago we had plenty of ageing guys- Carrol, Whelan, Wheatley, Robbo etc. It was pretty unlikely those guys would still be playing in 2009/10, but nobody was sure. However in 2010, an enourmous proportion of our starting 18 are really young and still getting better, so people can say with relative confidence that Scully, Trenners, McKenzie, Watts, Jurrah etc will all be in our 2013 team.

Secondly, the next 2 years of drafting is going to be a huge struggle. We'll get 1 good pick at the end of this year (pick 12 probably) and one good pick the year after (pick 16 probably), and the rest of our picks will be in the 40+ range where it is a lottery. We will not be having enourmous amounts of new talent coming through over the next 2 years (except Viney?) so most of our 2013 team will come from our current crop of talent. So we don't have to be fortune tellers as much.

Still Jamar aside, Sylvinators team is not far off.

Yep, it's just missing Junior, Trengove, Scully, Gysberts, Watts, Strauss, Tapscott, Blease, Fitzpatrick, Gawn, McKenzie, Jurrah, Wonna, Bennell and Jetta.

Firstly, I didn't realise that Strauss, Tapscott, Blease, Fitzpatrick and Gawn were in our starting 22 atm. Gysberts isn't in our best 22 either YET (at the moment he's just being blooded). I think most people thought captain JMcdonald would be retired by 34, so reasonable prediction at the time.

Scully and Trengove are the ones who are in the 2010 best 22 which I missed, obviously impossible to predict that.

Considering the turnover of our list over those 3 years, and Mclean and Buckley playing for different AFL clubs, it wasn't a terrible effort

Gysberts is just about in our best 22 IMO.

Good job anyway on that guess, I know it's impossible to pick the draftees

Anyways, my 2013 team prediction is pretty much exactly the same as Green Machine's prediction except:

IN: Morton, McKenzie, Bate,

OUT: Bail (not 100% convinced yet), Jetta (not 100% convinced yet), Blease (not 100% convinced yet)

I wouldn't be totally surprised if Bartram and Jones were replaced by more skillful better AFL players--- maybe Bennel, or even Viney or one of our draft picks over the next 2 years?

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
