MELBOURNE*

Daniel Bell (shoulder) - 3 weeks

Max Gawn (knee) - indefinite

Neville Jetta (groin) - 1-2 weeks

Liam Jurrah (shoulder) - 12 weeks

John Meesen (ankle) - indefinite

Cale Morton (knee) - 5 weeks

Jared Rivers (knee) - test

Colin Sylvia (jaw) - test

Luke Tapscott (hip) - indefinite

Austin Wonaeamirri (hamstring) - 2 weeks

Ah i forgot about the star woops....* Please note that Melbourne's list is from last week. It will be updated when available.

elsewhere on 'land, it has been mentioned Gawn has been training at Junction Oval, especially goal kicking and doing drills. if this is so, why is he on the indefinite injury list. Personally, I believe Gawn is one of the most important recruits we have made in the last ten years. One of the reasons Fremantle is on the rise is the presence and dominance of their giant mobile ruckman. Gawn is even more mobile and more skilled, and apparently is a great kick and mark. He could be another Paul Salmon. He and mark jamar and jack watts is a couple of years time cour dominate the competition like the bombers of old. if anything that combination is even more powerful than anything they had.

It would be nice to Max Gawn on the park and firing very soon. Anyone have an update on his current condition and when we are likely to see him?

Does anybody know where Daniel Hughes is? He is not on the injured list and did not play for Casey last week. Seems to have gone missing, again!.

Indefinite just means "don't know when he'll be back" (indefinite as in 'not definite' - not defined). I would've thought the answer to why is pretty obvious -- they don't know when he'll be back.

There seems to be this common misconception that 'indefinite' means 'forever' - admittedly that is what it always seemed to mean when we were talking about Guy Rigoni's back or Stephen Powell's groins.

There's no hurry on Gawn. He's a massive, massive kid who is apparently still growing a bit. We need him for the next 10-12 years more than we need him for the next 10-12 weeks. Comebacks from ACLs are always fraught with danger and I'm really glad we're giving him an extended lay-off.

The 12 month rule that we usually see doesn't really apply to Max either. That usually applies to players who have been in the system and have a fitness base prior to the injury. Max missed the 2nd half of last year and the entire pre-season. Once he reaches the end of his 12 month rehab in July he'd then likely enter 'pre-season' mode. If he gets in a few games for Casey Reserves at the end of the year, great, if not, I won't lose a minute's sleep. I'm more interested in him being 100% to commence his first full-preseason next year.

We live locally so I can get to JO quite often, again I had a chat with Luke Tapscott as he was as he put it enthusiastically "walking my first lap", much to the horror of my lovely lady who was with me, we asked him what he did and obviously he listens to the doctors he launched into this very descriptive medical diagnosis, I know it involved the cartilage so A. is probably correct but he lost both of us.....I could only reply "well you damaged it properly then" he laughed and said yes, he again is being treated cautiously, but thanked us for our support and said he was looking forward to playing for himself ,the team and the supporters who are really supportive which he appreciated

Thanks for this Satyricon - I like his prospects with a forward with a mature body and known to be a good kick I welcome his progress and look forward to seeing him play.

Word on Wonaeamirri is that it is not so much a musculoskeletal issue as a biomechanical one. That is to say, he is straining the hamstring in the last lunge of a tackle. This will mean some work with a bio-mechanist to improve technique. Hopefully this doesn't remove tackling intensity from his game, as if I remember rightly he has been a pretty solid tackler.

I just think of Hawthorn's Max Bailey... That helps me put this one into perspective. I'm not at all suggesting that Hawthorn's medicos brought him back too soon, but rather that our medicos feel they have to be extra cautious with a giant young unit post ACL reconstruction.

Also, not that it is a hard and fast rule, but there is a higher proportion of tall gangly types who have general laxity of their ligaments (all over the body, not just in the ACL). Max may be one of those people. The best thing you can do with these "lax" athletes is to allow them time to strengthen the musculature around each joint so as to provide greater overall stability. And even if he is not one of those "lax" athletes, the added strength work around the knee will reduce the likelihood of re-injury.

Another such example would be with LJ's shoulder. There will come a time in his rehab when the repair of the labrum (cartilage rim) of his shoulder joint is strong. His comeback date will therefore hinge on when the medical staff believe that the supporting musculature is sufficient to withstand the rigors of AFL football. Considering LJ is quite slight and appears to be a gumby type with loose ligaments (just judging by the way he can contort himself on the field and kick balls at angles few others can - eg over his head), we might see a similar conservative approach to his return.

Does anyone know what's going on with Sam Blease? Haven't seen any info about him running around for the Scorps.

Sam was set to play his first game for Casey Reserves on the weekend but was struck down with a virus so missed out. Hopefully he's feeling better for this weekend.

The good news is his leg is good to go.

Well he's on the "indefinite", long term injury list. That means we can elevate a rookie, or Have? elevated a rookie in his place. When he comes back, probably after the usually mandatory 12 months for an 'ACL', then he'll be taken Off the 'LTI' injury list. This doesn't stop him training & building up strength & condition.

Oh, this is a great post with welcome news. I was hoping to hear the bio mechanical veiw.

Thanks 'Brettmcg', this is what I thought it may have been.

Trained with the rehab group last Friday---my complaint on this website has been that many times our MFC website has not told us what is happening.Fitzpatrick is another.

He maybe ready for China in October

there's also a big difference between running in straight lines and kicking, and changing direction and having strength in the full range of movement of the knee joint.

I found articles about Jared Waites recovery from an ACL fascinating and the cross-training he did up in QLD with a leading expert on rehabbing these injuries.

Apparently he did a lot of trampoline work and other strange things.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
