Mild Demons must show wild side

Geez its hard for the Hun when they dont have a coach coming out of contract or an article on the "Pies for the flag".

Another article long on padding and speculation but without an iota of decent analysis.

Long on padding but the article does make a good point about the lack of fight in the team not just last week but over the past couple of seasons. It's not only reflected on the ground but in our team selection (Bennell over Cheney) and in our recruiting.

Harden up Demons FCS.

Agree with you on the need to fight but the drafting strategy of finding skilled players is sound. If you look at the bulldogs they followed this model but have been able to supplement with 'rough diamonds' through the rookie draft & trading - Moles and Morris are two that come to mind with Hall as the obvious trade. Look at the players we passed up in last years draft by holding on to Newton and Moose - Barlow, Hitchcock, Moles, Kayler-Thomson, Howlett, Silvagni.

I'm having a hard time keeping my breakfast down thinking about it....

Lack of fight... Get out of here. The article attempt to look at why beyong the shallow and naive "Miller the enforcer".

I would have thought that there were some senior players you would have pointed out in selection. Swapping Bennell for Cheney really is neither here nor there.

Whats up with the recruting?

Not quite sure what you're getting at here but I would have thought "lack of fight" was completely relevant to this article. After all, it's all about Melbourne's "mild side" and the need to develop a bit of a wild side.

I would have thought that there were some senior players you would have pointed out in selection. Swapping Bennell for Cheney really is neither here nor there.

Disagree totally with that sentiment. I could have pointed to some of the senior players but the selection of Bennell over Cheney in a game against a strong hard bodied teamlike Hawthorn is a decent example of what I'm saying and certainly not "here or there" in the context of Melbourne's problem as highlighted in the article.

Whats up with the recruting?

I am not questioning the overall recruiting but in the context of this issue it's fair to say that one or two extra tall strong bodied players over the past few years would have helped.

I also dont know why people keep bringing up our recruiting, and by using other clubs rookies/draft picks. Barlow played well, Moles did some things in pre season, the Hawks players were up against us. It has been 1 round. Seriously, if that is all it takes to questions our recruiting after 1 game, well I dont really know how to answer the issue. If those guys become very good players over the next couple of years, then you can argue the point, but to argue about it now is futile.

On the fact we need to have more fight, I agree. And size does not matter (so bringing in Cheney for Bennell, well I am not sure), just look at Whelan when he played. That being said, we need players like Moloney, Jones, Frawley, Bate (the bigger built players) to throw their weight around. They dont need to throw punches or start brawls, but if someone is there to smash, well bloody smash them. We need all the smaller guys (which we have many) to simply put their heads over the ball and go hard at the ball and man, on every occassion.

As I have stated in previous threads, it is quite sad that all we ask for as supporters is for the players to have a dip, put their body in and try. I would have thought that would be a given, but I am not an "elite AFL player" who needs to be reminded of the most simple things!!!!!!!!!

Imagine you are in the club rooms pre game:

*All right guys, noow I want you to try your hardest, for 4 quarters,

*When it is your turn, make sure you go for it,

*Help your teammates with voice and body protection,

*If you make a mistake, try again and dont put your head down.

NOW, the question is,

Was that a pre game speech from Dean Bailey or the Under 10's team at the local footy club?

Yep we ought to know by 2.40 exactly where this season is going.

The article is not bad with the exception of this laughable statement.

"If Lynden Dunn, who is about as aggro as it gets at Demonland, crashes into someone early and risks suspension so be it."

Lynden Dunn is lucky to crash through the banner without flinching.

That made me laugh too.

Dunn... for goodness sake, if the perception out there is that Dunn is one of our tough guys, we might as well shut up shop now!

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
