Tigers & Blues Get Lucrative Season Opener Again Why?

Lucrative - you only have to take a brief look at Melbourne newspaper today - geez if I was one of their sponsors I would be rapt.

Tigers reportedly made $500,000 profit out the game alone last season.

Why cant we get it?

Why do we deserve it? The fact that we don't draw as much would suggets we wouldn't get $500,000 game if we did have it.

They should have had the Bulldogs Collingwood game tat the G tonight. Two best teams in the comp for my mind.

Cos people will go. More people than if we were playing.

Might not be the truth, but it certainly is perception, and perception is often reality.

Once we are on the up and show we are capable of drawing decent crowds these games will become ours.

You got to earn it long before you will ever deserve it - AFL is not running a charity here - this is a business.

what makes you say that? The dogs have been performing well for years and they still don't get it

instead the two WORST teams of the last decade, both expected to miss finals, are given it

when we are good we will still be on sunday night vs Freo

Look at the attendance for the last time we held the season opener.

That's about all you need to do.

I think the key was "once we are on top and show we are capable of drawing larger crowds" or whatever I said.

It's about proving we can get the same crowds.

Last year Richmond were abysmal but still got a massive crowd in the same game.

Obviously expectations for both teams are a lot different this time around though.

So who's fault is that????

And who is responsible for that?

What do you mean?

We are. The supporters.

But you'll find you're mostly preaching to the converted on this forum.

Not having won for 46 years is a big reason.

Richmond & Carlton built a massive following when TV Replays became huge.

Blockbuster Games are built up on generational Rivalries..(Hatred) which is why our Queen's Birthday still exists- its not a marketing gimmick

Which is why we should aim to play the Saints on Good Friday. It means something deep down

Otherwise they don't last.

It does not seem like it on this thread.

The answers to the Ops questions seem obvious.

Honestly? Saints versus Demons on a traditional Christian day realy means something deep down?

On topic, there are 16 teams in the comp, only 2 can play in the opening match of the season.

We've had 2007 and 2000 in the last decade - neither drawing over 50,000. They are the only two season openers of the decade (player in Victoria) that failed to do so. Pretty simple why we didn't get the opener - and after Richmond/Carlton's 80,000 odd effort last year it's not hard to see why they did.

I'm happy we aren't playing tonight if we were we would probably see around 30,000 there if lucky. Unfortunately our supporters don't like, in general that is, night games, games where it is too hot or too cold, games on Sunday, Games.......

If we play on Saturday and the Planets align we will get 50,000 if we play at any other time I don't think we will get anywhere that number. BTW I'm not talking about the supporters on here I'm talking about the average MFC supporter.

We could play the Rabbitohs on Easter Sunday and give red and blue Easter Eggs to all the junior members. :)

I think we're pretty fortunate to get the only Saturday (and Saturday afternoon) game in Melbourne, the only traditional time slot given to us...

It's time to fork over for Foxtel Keyser.

GFC is coming, we've only postponed it.

Can't justify the money for something like Foxtel when all I want it for is a couple of matches a year.

I'll survive somehow.

2007 rd 1 friday night Dees V Saints, two vic teams being talked up as our great hope after years of interstate dominance. I was so pumped for that game & season. 49,490 attended. Mclean broke his foot in the first quarter, the demons barely give a whimper, and the season was a complete train-wreck. The beginning of the end.

I like the idea of Saints V Demons, but easter weekend is a bad time for it.

Demons V Blues Barrasi medal honoring players who fought in the war?

Demons V Geelong heritage

Demons V Sydney greatest city in australia day.

Demons V Hawthorn Thank God We Didn't Merge Game

Demons V Richmond Battle for The MCG

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
