Hi everyone,

As part of Demon Wiki, I'm trying to find out where each of our players was recruited from. Various sources have turned up a lot of the older players but I'm still stuck with a fat list of people who I can't find recruiting info on.

There's a few pretty famous names in the list but between all the usual suspects and a heap of trawling through old newspapers I simply can't find any mention. This is often because they're listed as coming from the Under 19's.

In reverse order;

1970's

Peter Dilnot (1972-1973)

Frank Giampaolo (1973-1977) (possibly Manangatang)

Laurie Queay (1972)

Stephen Kerley (1971-1974)

Greg MacDonald (1973)

Ian McGuinness (1973)

Shane McSpeerin (1971-1973) (Possibly St. Kevin's Old Boys)

Kelvin Richards (1978-1979)

Peter Thorne (1978-1984)

1960's

Bob Carroll (1961-1964)

Frank Davis (1964-1973)

Ken Emselle (1962-1969)

John Forster (1968-1970)

Alec Ingwersen (1962)

Brent Jones (1966-1971)

Terry Leahy (1966-1967) (North Albury like his brothers?)

Robert McKenzie (1969-1972)

Mark Mitchell (1969)

Ray Nilsson (1960-1963)

1950's

Ben Crameri (1957-1958)

Ray Hutchins (1950-1951)

Robert Johnson (1954-1961)

Dennis Jones (1956-1962)

Con OToole (1950)

Fred Webster (1955)

I've also got some for every decade back to the 1890's. I won't post them here for space reasons, but if you might be able to help with some obscurities from those decades please let me know. The full list is here http://wiki.fcmelbourne.com.au/tiki-index....e+Are+They+From

Cheers,

Have you ever seen the little pocket encylopedia of 'Every Melbourne Player' that came out a few years ago? It has a little write up on most of the players -Not all the entries say where they were recuited from, but it could probably knock off a few of the names on that list.

I actually have it somewhere, but I've been trying to find it amongst my books for the last six months

Much appreciated. Now of course I will find that book in the next five minutes

Thanks guys,

I'll keep updating the first post as the list gets cut down. Might even add the 1890's-1940's if it gets too short

Barham is a true mystery man - I've seen three potential clubs listed now.

In the biggest shock of all time I went through all my books and couldn't find the Encyclopedia of Footballers or the smaller MFC only version that I owned. Thought it would be a cert to show up in minutes after the info was already posted.

Phil Rhoden was recruited to Melbourne from University Blues in 1968. I remember him as a stocky defender who was a magnificent long kick - probably the longest kick I've seen at the club. He played a few seasons, mainly in the reserves and I have a feeling he might have won the Gardiner Medal in his first season. I think he was also on the club committee for a while during the 70s.

My enduring memory of Phil as a player was during a game on the MCG when he gathered the ball deep in the backline, ran and bounced once and then sent a kick that must have travelled well over 70 metres to hit a leading Ross Dillon on the chest. Dillon duly kicked the goal from about 50 metres out. Really spectacular stuff.

Neville Stone came straight from Bentleigh High School to play with the MFC 4th's, 3rd's, 2nd's and then played for the firsts wearing No. 18

Cheers guys,

Thanks to everyone who has sent some answers in. I've finally gotten hold of a copy of the book again so I'm chopping through a few quite quickly. Cam Schwab was nice enough to answer the two 80's ones (Hutchinson = Dingley, Barham = Gisborne)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
