MFC & MCC History

I've started this thread because I want to get a better understanding of the History of MCC and MFC.

What has the think link between MCC and MFC actually been in the past? And whats the plans for the future?

It's widely know that the majority of MCC members are actually MFC supporters followed by Bombers (last time i heard)...as a melbourne supporter and melbourne being the oldest club in the league it's quite crazy that we don't have our own oval...players have to travel out to casey.

Go and buy the club history book released last year for the 150th anniversary. Aside from being a good read it'll give you much of what you're seeking.

The MFC was a 'section' of the MCC until July 1980 when they separated from the them and became a public company. Until then the cricket club had taken any profits, and covered any shortfalls, of their football department.

In 1985 when North Melbourne almost exclusively moved to the MCG, the MCC decided that too many matches were being played there and threw Melbourne off. Fitzroy had just moved out of the Junction Oval to Victoria Park so we went there - apparently with the MCC covering the rental costs but god knows how long that lasted.

Happy to be corrected on any of the above, but I got it from old editions of the Age. Have the links somewhere but can't for the life of me find them now. Searching for MFC articles from 1980 or 1985 on Google News Archive should turn them up.

Thank God we re alligned with the MCC last year. Whoever made those decisions during the 80's had no foresight in business dealings.

We were thrown out homeless......

The reasons for leaving was to the benefit of the football club ands attempt to become more professional, RDB was a huge factor behind the push when he returned to coach. The issue was how the split was done, in speaking with Cameron earlier this year about it, he thought the MFC should have been given a percentage of the wealth it help build when it left, instead it was sent away with nothing and had to start from scratch.

Also the footy club was sending the MCC broke buying expensive duds through the 70's...

I am aware of all that, the whole thing was a mess from the start & should never have gone through. Both the MCC & MFC were to Blame.

Hopefully lessons on both sides have now been learnt.
